probably early September.
This is the slickest RAM ball mounting system I've seen yet for the 1300:
http://www.migsel.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=49&PHPSESSID=a3c9e25e273f6650ceff5d9f66cd87b6
I've been communicating with CycleGadgets about importing this, and they've decided to do so. They'd like to get an idea how many people from the 1300 sites might be interested in ordering to make sure they get enough in the initial order. The price will be about $130 (give or take a couple if the exchange rate shifts) plus shipping. That compares favorably with ordering directly from Migsel at about $170-$180.
Please let me know if you're interested in ordering. I'm posting this on other sites, too, so please answer on only one, so I can get a fairly accurate count. ST11Ray has one, and I'm sure will be happy to answer any questions about it.

Where does this mount??
The two holes line up with the machine screws on top of the dash. It looks like you'd be limited to accessories that will mount with RAM balls, but it is a pretty slick gadget. I'd be tempted, if I didn't already have a dash shelf.

It mounts through the holes that the two plastic rivets stick up from, on the top of the dash. It comes with 1 1" Ram ball, and has holes for 2 more (1 left, 1 center, 1 right) so can hold up to three separate items. While it's true that its "limited" to things you can mount with a RAM ball, that includes pretty much anything I can image mounting to a bike. And a lot of things I can't imagine mounting to a bike, but someone probably has.
I like the look of this better than I like the look of a dash shelf, but that's my personal opinion.

OK, is there hard frame under the dash top? I've never had my plastics off.
While certainly an attractively designed item, $130 seems pricey for 3 ball mounts. Couldn't you just put balls where the machine screws are and get 2 mounts much cheaper?
Blue STreak
08-12-2008, 02:42 PM
atonic, I think your idea might not work.
First, the holes that the migsel mounts to are smaller than the post on the RAM ball. I'm not sure if it would be possible to drill those out to take the RAM ball or not. Second, the Migsel distributes the load from whatever is mounted over a much broader surface. I'm not sure it would be a good idea to mount a moderatly heavy GPS directly through that one hole. I'm not going to try it.
Just to be clear, I have no incentive or benefit from this effort, other than I'm going to buy one. Cyclegadgets is going to order some anyway, and they're being nice enough to make sure they order enough the first time around, so someone from the list who wants one doesn't get left out.

As Atonic asked earlier.. "OK, is there hard frame under the dash top?" Good Question. To me, it seems Honda's use of push rivets in this location implies there's nothing but air (i.e. no threads) on the underside side of the holes.
With nothing for the machine screws to thread into, it naturally makes me wonder how the plastic dash will hold up to the (potential) weight of three RAM mounted devices cantilevered over the front?
Having said that, it sure looks like the best location.

I can only say that I made up something similar for my GPS. I have an 1100.
The GPS bounced around so much I couldn't use it, so I went with a more traditional between the handlebars mount.

I have one, and i love it.
Easy to fit, (and leaves no marks when you remove it). No vibrations, the Zumo is in my direct line of site and whitin reach.
No problems getting my ignitionkey in the hole ( I have some doubts about the Heliriser on that point).
130 US sounds expensive but its even cheaper then what we pay overhere in Europe.
The Migselmount gets my "Farkle stamp of approval".:bow1:

No metal frame under the rivets. That part of the dash would flex terribly under the weight and use of the Zumo and mount. IMO.

Hello guys, Just popped in for a moment to hopefully dispell any myths about the Migsel.
The plastic rivets pop into a plastic "bulkhead" that is hidden from view. These bulkheads have what I might call a "tunnel" that is open to the front of the bike.
Migsel supplies 2 well machined pieces of aluminium that are drilled and tapped, and are slightly ramped. They fit quite snugly into the "tunnels". When you mount the Migsel onto the dash top, the screws now engage into these aluminium pieces.
As an addition, being the retentive guy I tend to be, I also layered the bottom of the mount with 3M's Weather Proof tape (badge tape), which will adhere to the top of the dash in addition to the screws.
It's a very clean looking piece of machinery. Rock solid mounting, and I have the relatively heavier SP III GPS.
Here's picks:

The GPS mounts above the dash, not in front of it. It should not block any of the instruments or lights, unless you attach the RAM arm pointed down.
I plan to mount my 2730 to the left, rather than the center, to make the buttons easier to operate with my left hand. On my 1100 I had it mounted to a dash shelft in a similar position, and never felt my vision was impeded.

I am 79.6% wrong mostly so,,, take this in to consideration but,,,
I don't think the Dash thingy will block the original flashers any more than they are...
BUT,,, if you eventually go to a "Wide screen GPS" (((they will all be wide screen someday,,, mark my word))) the placement of the ACL Turn signal Thingy's might need to be "spread" out a shade... BUT,,, only if you keep the GPS up right hovering in that spot,,, which,,, I really don't see many doing... (((to hard to reach,,, needs brought back towards you more)))
Me??? My Opinion???
When/If I get this Mount,,, I will have an arm bringing the GPS back towards me so the ACL Turn Signal Thingy's will work just perfectly... :)
Count me in for an order of one. I want look directly at the GPS not off to the side. Very slick...

The price on their site is Euro's, not pounds. And we're not ordering directly from them. From CycleGadgets it will be about $130. Not cheap, but a lot better than $213 (or $172, which is the correct conversion from Euros).
Again, all I did was give CycleGadgets and indication of interest. This isn't a group buy, and no one's committed to anything. If you don't want it, don't buy it. Simple enough.

Would definitely like to get the Zumo up a bit higher and maybe use one of the other spots for the Icom radio.
Mounting the Zumo on the ram ball on the risers causes it to be behind the chin piece of the helmet in my normal position.

More expensive than I expected, though. From Germany, it's about $180 including shipping and 1 ball, from Cycle Gadgets it's $140 (rather than the $130 they guesstimated), but without a ball or shipping.
I've ordered one. Even at the price I think it looks better than a shelf on the 1300. Will post my impressions once I have it and install it.

I have the Migsel mount for my RT and am truly impressed! I have had it about 4 months and it is a wonderfully machined and powder coated bracket that looks stock. Installation was easy as in under 10 minutes and the Zumo is perfect up there. I am sure the ST version is as well built and designed. On request by Papa Brad some pictures of my Migselmount and connections.
Wires run behind the dash to the original quarterharness and Autocom unit.
Extra waterproofplug in the powercable so I can completely remove the Zumomount.
I made a small notch in the rim of the front plate of the dash to run the wires trough, so when I take everything of it wont leave a trace.

I spoke with Roy Fletcher about selling just the stiffener bracket from our Ron Smith/Roy Fletcher dash shelves and he has agreed to sell them for $35 plus shipping.
If you want one to add to your Migsel dash accessory mount (to stiffen the plastic dash for heavier objects) or if you want one for any other type of dash shelve that doesn't also stiffen the plastic dash, email me at jzulaski@hotmail.com to get on the waiting list.
I have one stiffener bracket "in hand" right now with the rest being prepared to go into mass production at the beginning of December.
This bracket installs inside the dash and works with the power windshield rails (i.e., if you don't have a power windshield, this bracket will NOT work for you).
This is great for supporting heavier objects like GPS's, Cameras, etc. up on dash shelves or the Migsel accessory mount.

Joe Zulaski

The stiffener bracket I have available is now taken. However, more will be coming off the production line starting on December 1st.
It is actually part of the Ron Smith Dash shelf but, it can be used with other shelves or with the Migsel to stiffen the plastic dash in order to provide a more stable platform for mounting heavier farkles on the dash.
It only works with ST1300's that have a powered windshield as it bolts to the two windshield rails and to the plastic dash through the two holes on the top of the dash. Here is a picture: http://www.st-owners.com/forums/album.php?albumid=430

Yes, the Migsel is more expensive than most dashes. Especially home made. But then again, an ST1300 is more expensive than a lot of other bikes. Sometimes getting just what you want is worth what you have to pay. I had a dash on my 1100, and ended up with nothing on it but a GPS. I don't, personally, like the way most dashes look on the 1300, so the Migsel is the answer to the question I asked.

Joe: Very novel indeed. Chalk another great idea to Ron!
Just looking at the pictures, tell me if I'm seeing it right... the stiffener bolts to the (1) machine bolt on the windscreen bracket, yes? Is there any reason Ron couldn't, or wouldn't cut the bracket so that it can make that second bolt just forward of the one being used?
This would add significantly to the structural integrity of the stiffener, as in its current configuration, it *is* conceivable that the stiffener can still pivot slightly on that (1) attachment bolt. And, believe it or not, it is thus conceivable that it *could* end up loosening one or both of the bolts. A long shot for sure, but thoughts like that are why structural engineers make things the way they do on big buildings.
All he would have to do it cut the end of the stiffener a bit fatter (toward the front) to reach that second bolt. (but maybe there's a reason I'm not aware of why this couldn't be done)
(sorry, I can't help it, that's the Ironworker coming out in me :))
