Last Friday my daughter went to spend the night with her Grandmother. My wife and I were going to go to a movie (using the bike as transport) when, to my surprise, my wife suggested we just go for a ride and blow off the movie. Not quite having any destination in mind, but knowing I want to avoid traffic lights, I steer us toward the closest country roads around us.

My wife was still using her "horse" helmet (think half helmet). So I was trying to aim for the safest route possible. We crept the speed up to around 70 mph and that seemed to be about as fast as we cared to go on account of wind noise. Occasionally I got a couple wind blasts where I could understand some of the "back wind pressure" people have posted about. Fortunately, like the heat issue, it only appears to show up when many factors come together to create the environment needed (speed, my seat position, my wifes seat position, posture of both of us, wind direction, etc...).

The temp was in the low 90's and one of my more cooler rides so far since acquiring my ST. We got to the park in about 40 minutes. Having only $5 cash on hand, and needing $6, the park ranger was kind enough to charge one of us as a senior citizen. We putted around the park and I saw 2 raccoon, 4 stags, 4 doe, 8 alligators (one of which was about 6 feet long), and a million different species of bird. (Great Blue Heron being my favorite out of the list, if you really want to know other birds out there, feel free to ask). I'm always amazed at the diverisity of birds at the parks around here. The one short walk we took also showed us a million water lillies in bloom. The flowers glowing that bright yellow green that a fresh can of tennis balls seem to eminate. Then I thought of Bill Murray in Caddyshack and just wanted to go "club" a few....Cinderella Man...outta nowhere. But I digress.

If you live in the Houston area, especially on the south side, I highly recommend this park and the ride, albeit a mostly straight shot (as most roads are in this part of Texas), it's quiet, got room for high speed, big shoulders in case of emergency, and a fun place to visit or practice over night camping with your bike. As a bonus, the park features a small wildlife center that the rangers can play show n' tell with snakes, birds, small mammals, and baby gators. There is also a big telescope in their observatory which is open on Saturdays. The trails are in "great" condition and they have some tall towers for which you can bird or gator watch from.

Footnote: I took my nearly 7 year old daughter for a ride today for a grand tour of Friendswood and all it's schools. After 40 minutes of riding, and it getting rather hot (95), she still did not want to go home. On the last stretch I did some sharp twisties on a straight road and she couldn't help but grin.

Be well all and hope to see you all out there riding!

Thanks Doob, I enjoyed your impromptu ride report. Makes me wish my kids were small again. I was surprised to hear about alligators in Texas, very cool. Too bad you didn't take some pics, but you know how hard to please STowners are.

The ride out to the park has a few sweepers. They have really nice camping facilities/cabins. The lakes are crawling with gators... gotta be careful taking Fifi for a walk... :D I used to camp out there alot and was always amazed seeing all of the critters early am.

A great friend of mine's father used to work out there as a Park Ranger... his name, for real, is Dave Crockett. John's family are related to the famous Crockett.

If you get a chance you should camp out there during spring/fall when it is comfy for the little one ;) The cabin/shelters have outlets... I think they go for $12 a night.

Thanks for the prompting the fond memories! :)

AGStreak, I'll get some pictures of it, and the gators, deer, and birds. I need to pick up a cheap digital camera. I have a bulky Minolta Dimage 7i (5 mp), but it's only good for taking shots when you can stop and compose the picture. Action shots are a pain (not successful).

Any suggestions for a 3 Mega Pixel (mp) camera that is small, easy to use, takes fairly decent action shots and is cheap? I'll check out www.dpreview.com when I have the time, but it's always nice to get starting points from the wise.

Sherob: We were scouting it out for camping since my daughter is in Brownies and my wife is now troop leader this coming year. So it will certainly be a good place to take the troop. I had stayed in Cabin #5 when I was in High School on an Astronomy field trip. As it turns out, it rained so there was no point in watching stars. One of my idiot friends took the candles I brought and started melting them onto the concrete and then taking twigs and half used matches and dumping them onto the wax puddle. These extra items acted as wicks and the fire got going about 6 inches high and about 6 inches wide. Then it exploded because the air trapped in the concrete beneath it expanded. The fountain of blue flame on wax droplets was very pretty, almost magical. Somehow my sleeping bag evaded the burning wax, but others in my cabin were not so lucky. Not significant damage to their gear, but who really wants burn holes in their outer portion of the bag? The cabin only has a minor divet in the concrete (3 mm down) that I doubt anybody would notice, but it still irritated the heck out of me since I try my hardest to make sure people respect the parks that we have.

Anybody else have any park recommendations for a Houston "day" ride?

Sam Houston State Park in Huntsville... haven't been out there in a while... has swimming lake, no gators... LOL! Straight up I-45.

Ft. Travis on Bolivar... get to take the ferry across... old WWII installation to walk around... camping and cabins I think, haven't been there in a while either...

Those are 2 off of the top of my head... :)

I know what you mean. A small camera helps but it's not a solution. It's hard to stop and take pics when your having a really good time.
"you should see the pictures I didn't take" :D :D

Sam Houston State Park... could have sworn that was the name, but your right, been a while... they had a swimming area roped off :) I guess it was so the gators could find us easier... LOL!!! It was clear water if I remember right... we went to Chickasaw State Park in TN last week... that lake water was NASTY... turned every hair on your body orange/brown  Listened to some guys from Chicago complain about the heat
