View Full Version : How to get airflow like standing up.

The more I ride this bike, the more I like having the shield down. I have seen people with cut off shields, wider shields, taller, etc, but I found that my scorpion helmet is extremely quiet when I stand up. I would like to have that kind of air flow when sitting down. Is it possible? If not, what would be the closest thing to it.
I know this kind of thing has been talked about before, but I just can't seem to find what I'm thinking of.

Howdy,
The mounting bracket has two settings, do you have it in the lowest one?

Yes, it is in the lowest setting. I was thinking about hacking up the stock shield to get rid of the back pressure when up, but figured out the high noise is coming from the shield/fairing turbulence. Opening up the hole in the bottom of the shield won't fix this I don't believe.

Out of curiousity, Where is it set in the factory?

Has anyone taken a stock shield and chopped off 2 or 3 inches from the top?? If so what did it do??
Biddy,
From the dealer, it "should" be in the low(short) position..

Way back on the MSN board I remember someone, maybe two, who was cutting the shield down by 2 to 3 inches. At WeSTOC IX ther was a guy with the shield cut down to the height of the dash.
As for what did it do, well that completely depends on the height in the saddle of the rider.

I have a 2" under stock Cee Bailey shield. I'm 6'7" with a russell seat. I am trying to move the wind noise off the helmet. I tried +2 first, not good for me. The 2" shorter moved it down but I will be cutting 2 more inches off. If I sit up real straight the ride is very quiet. One problem with shorting up the shield is every bug on the planet now ends up on the face shield.

Sounds familiar, I'm 6'3" and the wind is right on my face. It irritates me even more since a installed a CB, above about 50mph the wind noise really carries thru the mic

Now there is an understatement.

I have taken the stock shield and cut some 4.5 inches off the height and tappered the edges a bit, maybe took about 1 inch off from the bottom and 1/4 inch at the top. The wind STILL hits me in the helmet and creates excessive wind noise, but it is better than a stock shield lowered all the way. I am 5-8 inches tall, no helibars, stock seat. This cut down shield is however acceptable in the raised position for me to look through the shield when I want weather protection on cold nights when I forget the heated gear. However, since this cut shield is primarily my summer shield (I run a Clearview +2 tall and +3 wide in the winter), I usually just keep the shield at its lowest level.
I have since shimmed the cut down shield by installing some rubber shims under the lower windshield mount (about 1/4 inch thick) which has the effect of tilting the top of the shield down a bit. It has helped with air flow to some degree, but I still get too much wind noise IMO.
The next step is to weld additional metal on the lower part of the "L Brackets to which the shield mounts (the brackets which mount the shield to the arms which raise and lower the shield), and elongate the bottom hole, so the shield can be tilted even more. If this doesnt work, its time to take another inch off the height of the shield.
I know EXACTLY what you are trying to achieve when you say you want the airflow to be like when you are standing up. The absolute worst part of the ST1300 IMO is the wind noise....its absolutely freaking terrible.
Wish someone would simply make a new cover piece for the front fairing, such that one could remove the windhshield and windshield arms in their entirely, with the fairing have a "smooth" no hole cover....now that would be a good idea. No windshield, no windshield arms, no nothing on the front of the bike.....ah, smooth wind flow would most likely result and would be fine for summer riding.

I guess I can try this someday, but has anyone taken off the shield to see what it is like?

:D I just think its the greatest thing in the world to have to clean both sides of the windshield. Hahaha! Maybe, just taking it off is the answer. hehehe!
I take my shield off for riding around town, it's great if you like the breeze. I removed those inner plastic pieces so it's easy to pop on and off.

Do you get a full breeze like standing up? If so, why can't we duplicate it.
