I'm installing some progressive springs in the front of a 2002 ST1100 non ABS. The manual and Clymar book both say a 2002 ST1100
(non-ABS) should have oil up to 7.5" from the top of the fork tube. The
progressive instructions, manual, and the online procedure I printed out all
say 5.5" from the top. The Honda Service Manual says the only model that is supposed to be 5.5" from the top of the fork tube is the LBS-ABS/TCS.

What say the "powers that be"???

I'd go with about 6.0" (150mm) and tune from there. If it feels harsh to you drop the level a bit, if there's still too much brake dive raise it a little. 5mm increments are good to work with.

Rich, thanks for the reply, but I decided that I spent the money on the service manual to make sure I did things right - so 7.5 it was. However, I think I may add a touch of preload by lengthening the spacer and adding a short one on the opposite side. I'm getting just a touch too much sag.

Another rider also told me I might consider lowering the shocks in the tree maybe 3/8" to quicken the steering. I've never tried it, but makes sense. Maybe later this summer...

Dale,

Obviously, using the stock level isn't a bad idea. :) Given how soft the the ST's fork springs are though, running a little higher level will help some with that "weak at the knees" feeling the ST has when using the front brake hard. What weight oil did you use??
