Went to Iowa and visited a small memorial that someone put up at the crash site of Buddy Holly. It is about a 1/4 mile down a fence line between a bean field and a corn field in north central Iowa about 10 or so miles from the I-35. The intersection where the path starts into the field is at 315th St. & Gull Ave., Clear Lake, IA (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=315th+St.+%26+Gull+Ave.,+Clear+Lake,+IA&spn=0.026441,0.060176&hl=en). If you walk straight west from this intersection you'll come across it about 100 feet past where the cornfield to the north ends. I'm not a huge fan it was just an excuse to ride and you would never know this is there because there is not a single marker for it or to it.
Here's some pictures from the trip:

Curt, when were you there. I live about 10 miles from there in Mason City. Let me know if you pass this way again.
Each February, there is a Buddy Holly renunion at the Famous Surf Ballroom. People from all over the world come here.
Mason City is also the home of the "Music Man". Mason City was "River City" in the movie.

Interesting cash crop...
That was the funniest thing. We're walking out there and then HEY LOOK AT THAT!
Well it's a farm field so if any happens to drop something on the way out there you can bet it's going to grow. ;)

Curt,
Did you cross the Mississippi at Cassville?
If so, did you stop at Balltown for lunch??

Hey Putt, I did cross at Cassville. I did not stop in Balltown for lunch. We headed south from there and rode the Stagecoach road from Galena east a ways. Then ran parallel to the border until Beloit. Then jumped on I-43 to home.

Ok,
I love that area of S.W. Wisconsin/NE Iowa.. Some nice roads up there...
If I am going to do some half/arsed serious riding for a day or two, thats
where I head for... Galena is nice, but crowded from time to time...
Ever take "BlackJack" road from Galena to Hanover??

I haven't but now that I know it's there I'll have to check it out next time out. I found it with Streets and Trips. Is there some place special to eat in Balltown? Is Balltown a town or a place?
Thanks for the tip.

Balltown pop 52 (+-) Breitbach's, Oldest tavern in Iowa.. Even stayed open during prohibition cause the feds could not find Balltown...
Place is loaded with cycles on the weekend... Food is ok, sometimes
great...
Coming from the north (the ferry) just follow the Great River Road South...
If you want to cross the Mississippi in Dubuque headed back home,
follow the GRR all the way to Sageville where it connects to US 52.
coming from Dubuque, take 52 North to Sageville, turn right at the
gas station.. Dont follow the sign that points to
Balltown, keep going straight . to Sleepy Hollow road, follow that to
Sherrill, take a right at the Stop sign, and on to Balltown.. From Balltown,
you can head on up to Marquette, Ia, and cross on US 18 into Prairie DuChien
Just North of Guttenberg Ia, stop at Pikes Peak St. Park and enjoy the
view...
Lemme know the next time you are in the area.. Will come up and meet ya..

I actually went there because it was a bonus stop on the Bonzai run I did a couple months ago. They wanted to know its claim to fame which was the oldest bar in Iowa but all I did was get that and head out. I'll have to go back and actually check it out sometime.
