I left my house at noon on 8/26/08 on and headed south on I-5. I met my riding buddy south of Seattle. We ate lunch in Chehalis, Wa. Arrived in Portland around five am and had a bit of a flat tire/damaged rim. after the tow to the ducati dealership, we rode two up to my friends house.
http://grill.smugmug.com/photos/360247609_x7yDQ-M.jpg
EDIT: As you can see the person riding pillion is not too happy to be there. Him and I are both larger gentleman and we tested the limit of the rear shock. Also, if you look closley, he is wearing the courier bag due to the fact that all of our crap filled up the hard cases. With permission from the mods and coruier bag owner, I would like to start calling the courier bag the "***** bag" due to him riding ***** and acting like one while wearing it. :headbang:
After an uneventful night, I hit the road about two pm and met DAS (Dan) in Newberg, Or. After a quick lunch I headed for the coast. You can see my map here. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Mill+Creek,+WA&daddr=S+Sprague+Ave+%4047.252900,+-122.463040+to:beaverton,+oregon+to:Newberg,+OR+to: banks,+or+to:Seaside,+OR+to:astoria,+or+to:knappto n,+wa+to:naselle,+wa+to:raymond,+wa+to:montesano,+ wa+to:mcCleary,+wa+to:shelton,+wa+to:allyn,+wa+to: wauna,+wa+to:gig+harbor,+wa+to:tacoma,+wa+to:Mill+ Creek,+WA&hl=en&geocode=%3B5046516055632013373,47.252900,-122.463040%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B% 3B%3B%3B&mra=ls&via=1&sll=47.368594,-122.387695&sspn=0.500395,1.171417&ie=UTF8&ll=46.407564,-121.563721&spn=4.075619,9.371338&z=7)
85% of the roads i took on the second day were new to me. Oregon is spectacular.
One more thing before I shut up......
This bridge connects Washington and Oregon. The whole five miles of it is a passing lane..... there wasn't any oncoming traffic...... raise your hand if you've ever gone 110mph over the columbia river while crossing state lines....

I love this bike.

When we do this next year.. and I'm pretty darn certain we will. We'll get a Spot to stay with the bag.
As of about 2 PM on Aug 30 it was in GemSTate ST's bag and headed for Boise ID.

See the map updated by Mellow (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48721&page=2).
Can someone set up a counter for each rider that caries the bag to enter the miles it is carried. Grant did about 250 and I carried it 300 and GemSTateST must have carried it about 190 so far but looks like the plans for leg 3 will be creative and will net a lot more miles than the 460 mile direct route (if there is such a thing from Boise to Helena). It would be cool to have a running total.
Also, It took hwy 22 and 26 east from Salem to John Day - not I84 so the above map would need some editing to be very accurate although I know that isn't the intent unless Dennis has a lot of time on his hands.

It's not too late.... Perhaps a collection is in order?
Anyone interested in helping me purchase a SPOT/Service? It would be sent out to intercept the ride ASAP.....:please1:
Looks like it would cost...
$149 for the SPOT Tracker
$99 for 1-year Service
$49.99 for Unlimited tracking (www.mypilotstore.com has the service for $25 right now)
I just purchased an aviation Radio @ $250.... I may lose some delicate parts of my anatomy if I try to sneak $300 past the SO on my own...LOL

Let's include each riders total miles in the log as well.....That way we can see how many miles each rider put it to meet, carry, and hand off Derek's bag

Let's include each riders miles in the log as well.....
I'm showing 394 mi roundtrip Boise to John Day so figure half that or 197 mi for the bag (John Day to Boise).
Alan, can you check the log book and enter 300 miles by my name if it isn't there already? thanks.

Boise to Helena:
Alan Arm and me will meet early Saturday morning just outside of Boise, he will have gotten the bag from Bill and we will ride over to Helena via Stanley and the scenic Chief Joseph Pass in the Bitteroot range. We are meeting George in Helena. THANKS, George :bow1: for coming all the way in to Helena to pick up the leg that no one else did.
That's the plan. Easy day over and an easy day back. Shouldn't even be 1000 miles total for two days, but on the way back I'm thinking Lolo and hwy 12 to Kooskia to home. Last weekend the passes had 2-3 inches of snow in some central ID locations, I'm sure MT did too, so that's the only concern now. If we can get the bag east bound and down with George then we really oughtta be truckin'.
Let's Ride.

As promised, here is the weekly Donation Tally
Total Donations received as of 7 September is $385.97
4. Voluntary donations will be accepted for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) in Honor of Derek Catt and Charlie Woods. I'll emphasize "Voluntary" not mandatory. Names of folks who do/do not choose to donate will be known only to me. This ride is supposed to be fun and to get Forum Members together...not to see who the biggest donor can be. The "Donor" to the PBTF will be "The Members/guests of ST-Owners.com". Donations can be sent via Pay-pal to me at hawk996(at symbol)sbcglobal(dot)net or via check/snail mail. Anyone that wishes to send a check may PM me for my snail mail address. It was decided that this would be the safest method for all riders to prevent the possibility of being Hi-Jacked enroute with a growing amount of :policeST:cash... You never know who may be lurking and looking for an easy score.....:PoPoST1: Donations will be tallied weekly as they are received and sent all at one time as the ride is completed.
No new donations since the last update..

I believe it has been suggested, and it is a great idea. I'm sure if someone does, they'd have little problem getting a few bucks from each of us to pay for it. I'd throw in a ten spot.....no pun intended. As the PE continues, I think more people will get the itch to know where the bag is at RIGHT NOW..as those of us who've handled it can attest to.

Well, since we don't have the SPOT with the journal yet, here's the current update as of 9:15 Wed night Sept 10: George and I met in Lincoln, NE this AM at 8:00 and ran 415 miles north to Pierre, SD (will post pics and a quick report when I get home). Met Ken (Bullmoose45) at the capitol and made the handoff. Ken and George were going to head about 85 miles north to Selby, SD for the night and then head to Bismark in the AM (~ 140 more miles). My guess is they'll take pics in Bismark and George will head east toward St Paul tomorrow. I know he was hoping to be in St Paul by Fri PM.
Had a blast, we need to do this again :D

Ok Guys here is the inside Scoop..
George left Bismarck at 11:00 their time; I handed the package over to George in front of the Capital in North Dakota. We were invited to join the food tasting in the lobby but as tempting as that was both of us were on a mission and headed on our way.
George was taking the Interstate into Minnesota so he should be getting close to his destination now.
It is amazing how interested the people were at the Capital in ND in our mission, and how accommodating everyone has been. Oops with the exception of the Motel owner that would not let us put our bikes under the awning during the rainstorm last night:wine1:

It is now with me in Minnetonka, MN.
George handed of the pouch to me at the capitol building in St. Paul, MN a little after 6:00 this evening.
It will begin it's journey to Des Moines, IA early tomorrow morning, 9/12/08. As of now, I have no one meeting me in Des Moines so I will carry the pouch to Spring Green, WI where it will attend WiSTOC and then finish the Des Moines/Madison leg on Sunday morning, 9/14.
Last call for anyone wanting join up for any part of legs 9 or 10. PM me before 6:00 am Friday morning to arrange meeting me.

George and I pulled into Madison, WI about 10am. I carried the bag from Spring Green, WI to Madison, WI a whole 38 miles. Almost had to stop. :p: I then handed the bag back to George as he is now the official transport (again). We rode south toward Illinois together and seperated near Lake Geneva, WI as he head south to Adam and I turned east toward home.

He's on the hook to get it to Springfield next weekend.
Maybe we should solicit SPOT as a sponsor for next year's ride. It seems to work well, might sell a bunch of'em thru this site. :D

Nah. Every time from click until completely finished map it takes about 5 seconds, on an 802.11b (as in: old & slow) wireless network.

I have the bag - it was handed to me at 1710 on Route 24 outside of Washington, IL. It is in Peoria right now and I turned off the SPOT. I plan on being on the road to Springfield, IL at 0600. Adam got a Route 66 patch for the bag. I will try to sew it on tonight.
I sewed on the patch. A little crooked, but it is on.:D

I passed it on to Dan Nelson and DR1954 at 0915 this morning in Springfield, IL. It looks like they are in Moonshine now. I thought the spot wasn't working. I couldn't get it to mark my house last night, but it looks like it is working fine this morning. We ended up doing the trade off in front of the capital building in front of the Lincoln statue. It appears that Lincoln's tomb is being renovated.
The Spot actually shows my stop at the ATM. I thought that was funny.
Adam,
I did get on RT 66 through Sherman, IL.

It was a pleasure meeting Biddyman and DR1954. Enjoyed a good breakfast and conversation with them. DR1954 and I had a great ride to ACL's and Moonshine. A little bit cool in the morning, a little bit of rain on the way, and then warm and sunny to finish up. Darn near a perfect day!!!!!
ACL was an excellent host, getting us to Moonshine, and we had a good visit over good moonburgers.
I headed back home from there leaving ACL and DR1954 discussing the "Spot" and journal.
I rode "quickly" home, but was still a little late. (missed a friend's son's wedding, but made the reception)

Hi fellow PE riders and lurkers -
I got thrown into keeping the bag moving when a couple other OH riders had bike malfunctions.:(
On Wednesday, 9-24-08, I rode from my house to Port Clinton, OH to receive the bag from 2Dogs, Greydog & Tommy5313, all coming from Lansing MI. We met at a hotel off of OH Rt 2 to do the exchange and get aquainted.
My round trip was 203 miles, all on slab except for my attempts to avoid traffic jams. Major roads taken: OH RT 422, I-480, OH RT 176, I-90, OH RT 2
I wasn't able to make the trip to Columbus, OH until Friday, 9-26-08 due to work restrictions. But Friday was a great day to ride.
I left at 7:40 am, made it to the capitol by 10:40am for pics. Then it was on to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame & Museum for a quick pic.
After lunch I met MisterTFM in Cambridge, OH at 1:20pm for the bag exchange. Ran through a few sprinkles, but nothing to worry about. First rain on my new bike! :( We took some time to fill out the log book, rest from our rides, and take the obligatory pics. Then it was off and riding again, both of us heading for home.
My miles carrying the bag Friday were 240. My round trip miles were 377.
Again my route was mostly slab due to time constraints. Major roads taken: OH RT 422, I-271, I71, I-70, I-77.
My many thanks go out to 2Dogs, Greydog, Tommy5313, and MisterTFM for working with me on very short notice to keep the bag moving. What a great bunch of guys!:yr1:
I was really happy to be able to take part in this ride and would be willing to do it again sometime. Also, a big thank you to the organizor, Tankereng, and all the riders before and after me who are keeping it going.:bow1:
Here are some pics of both the exchanges I was involved in, plus a couple extra from the trip. Enjoy!
Port Clinton handoff: Left to right - 2Dogs, Greydog, Tommy5313, dhall854
Cambridge handoff: MisterTFM (L), dhall854 (R)
Now this is a great report - photos and everything - well done.
And how about some more friendly rivalry? How about a count of how many miles the bag has been carried by a 1100 and how many by a 1300? I can see the 1300 riders whining no fare all ready.
George

Dang, should'a thought of this earlier! There's a plaque in the AMA museum with Derek's name on it. Would'a been great to have a pic of that with the package. Oh, well, too late now.
Still hoping the folks who get to St. Joe and Sacramento can add some more original Pony Express references.
Good for all of us for making this happen.

On Sunday, September 28th, I rode from Butler, PA to Harrisburg, PA to meet Mike aka DEL and Randy aka RUBLE and pass the bag to them at the capitol building via Route 422, I99, Route 30 and 15. Approx 245 miles one way and another 255 to return home to Butler, PA. Weather was in the mid 60's to mid 70's and rained from Altoona to Gettsburg and again while in Harrisburg.
I carried the PE bag around 390 miles with another 410 back and forth for a total of 800 miles.
Great job, Tom! :bow1:
Thanks for keeping it on the move. Too bad you had to get rained on a bit. I have a feeling there's more of the liquid stuff ahead of the next few riders too.:(

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is a great charity. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Traynor twice. Once back at STAR88 in Liberty PA back and at the Honda Hoot 2006.
I met Tom/STNY at the Apple Valley Restaurant in Milford PA for lunch. Then it was off to DQ in Bernardsville NJ to meet Mike/Dell and Randy/Rulbe, SteveST1300 also made an appearance. It rained carrying the bag home to Newburgh. It rained all day off and on but I’ve grown very used to the rain since getting the ST. Total for the day was 192 miles. 73 miles was actually carrying the bag. Tuesday the weather looks to be much better.

After leaving the H-D store we all headed S. on state rte 9 to Dover...we came home on State rte 13 N back to 295 and the DMB once again.

If need be, I can 'hold' the package until someone can come up to Nashville to get. I live on the west side of town - 7872 Charlotte Pike (yeppers, same road as the Capitol - about 11.5 miles further west). Can't meet at the Capitol (we have church in our house and that's about church time) but someone could drop it off at the Holler if you like. Easy to find - 2 miles west from the Old Hickory/Charlotte Pike(US70) intersection (near exit 199 I40) on the right side right after the big hill. 4x4 post at end of the drive with 3 blue reflectors and 7872 on it.

[QUOTE=patiodadio;576069]Hi all , 05ST1300ABS (Russ) and I made the hand off today at Corbin KY . He has everything and was last seen heading south on I-75 :)
It was great meeting you today and we could have talked for many hours about all those motorcycle stories..
I took the ride down to Exit 129 at Lake City and took the SPOT across the DEVILS TRIANGLE, Hy 116 to PEtros, TN. And then took Hy 62 across to Hy 298 to Crossville TN and then west to exit 209 Charlotte Pike.
I bought a throw away camera in Crossville and as soon as I get those pics Ill try and figure a way to get them up there.
I met with RIdeTN(Terry) out there in ADamsville TN around 7:30PM.. I was running a little ahead of schedule and wasnt there 10 minutes when he pulled up.
The hand off went well but we went inside to get some pics with my daytime cheapie camera(ASA400). I hope they turn out.
Uncle Phil was on one phone giving me the quick directions to the house...and the shortest, and the worst, and had Terry on the other phone. IT was kinda crazy....but it worked like a swiss watch.

Russ got home OK...around 12:15AM just like Uncle Phil said...
Thanks for the offer to stay over there but I had the scooter in the wind and it only got around 55-57 at the worst temps. Wind was at the side but not bad. I had some clothes in the bags and even ate outside at a Sonic at Exit 172? or something like that.
I cant wait to check out the SpOT thing as I took it for a joyride acorss the backroads to Crossville.
Great meeting you and I hope Psycycledad and others can make a smooth handoff again.
appreciate the quick arriveal...you would think we had it planned like that..
Take care Terry....let me know if you are riding in the area next summer and I would be happy to join you, Uncle Phil, Patiodaddio, and maybe we could round up H20 rider and a few more.

I took a look at the Spot page this morning. It appears that the riders carrying it have not been initiating the "Tracking" mode that updates every 10 minutes. Only the OK messages are showing up on the website.
Everyone please take a look at the instructions to see if we can get the tracking going again. It could just be the SPOT but let's take a closer look either way...Thanks!!:D

When we had it in New England we had the same problem. After you pushed the "ON" button and that light came on, you needed to wait 5 seconds, then hold down the right button until the right light started to blink fast (about 5 seconds) If you don't hold this button down it would start blinking, but it would only ping once then the right light would go out. It gives you the impression that it is working. It took us a little while to figure this out. OH, and after we read the directions.
Good luck and , ride safe

I am not a regular SPOT user and I took a very special route across Devils Triangle , HY116, from Lake City TN to Petros TN.
I thought it was tracking every 10 minutes but I dont know much about them.
I noticed it only logged Lake City*HY116 START), Crossville, Nashville, and Adamsville.
Well, I got it delivered and someday Ill read the intrcuctions on how to check the tracking from 10 minutes or 2 hours...not sure on the setttings thing.

If interested, Lulu.com is a publisher of sorts. If someone were to put it all together, it can be uploaded to them. Then, whoever wants a copy just signs on and requests one. Lulu.com just prints on demand and then ships out to the buyer. You could make as many or as few as you like. This would be a really inexpensive option with no worries of sitting on extra books.
My sister did this as a Christmas gift one year for me. She uploaded a bunch of my artwork and then ordered one book. Pretty cool and good quality. Just a thought....

Good for all participants for making this happen. If ya didn't get to ride and/or sign the log, think of a contribution as a direct way to be involved.

Ahhhhhhh, sitting in Niceville to rest the mount. Rider is ready to go in . . . say . . . 5 minutes? 12 days? I'll catch up in a little bit. Great riding today, lots of nice roads and other than a pre-dawn sprinkle that wet down the roads before I departed the motel in Selma, it was dry all day. A little spray from traffic ahead for a little while - that's it. Overcast, upper 60s - perfect.
Did make a stop coming into Florida to take a pic at the HIGHEST POINT IN FLORIDA, 345 feet above sea level. Pics to follow tonight or tomorrow on the threads.
So, who's next?

I still want in, but I'm not sure it's doable. I was hoping to fall in with someone as it heads North.

A plan is materializing to keep moving and not wait for Stagecoach.
Holding the bag for the Stagecoach RTE was a nice idea, but, riders are waiting that signed up long ago, so let's "move'm out!" Nothing stops the Pony Express!
Firming up for Hotel 179 and I to meet Thursday on the East side of Crestview for breakfast then head over to link up with Benbucktoff in Tallahassee to transfer the PE gear. He'll take it up to Atlanta on Friday. That's as far as I can see.
It would seem possible that the Atlanta to Columbia run could be made on Saturday then head South on Sunday.
Anyone has some time to ride along to Tallahassee, join in.
And if anyone wants to join in along the route to Atlanta on Friday (sonny?), check with Ben.

I spoke to Benbucktoff around 3 PM. He handed off the bag this morning to Skywriter who was headed to Columbia ?? via Augusta, GA. Skywriter had spoken to Ccobra8 who is set to take the bag to Columbia tomorrow morning to see the SC state capitol then head to Savannah where he will meet up with Travl_r 45 early Sunday morning. Early Sunday morning the bag will head south and meet me in Jacksonville, FL around 8 AM. I'll leave Jacksonville after picture time for ORL to meet Pafbsoftball around lunch time at Lake Eola. This is Sunday 12/21.
Ccobra8 has no internet access for the next few days and will be hard to reach. If anyone wants to join the ride from Savannah to Jacksonville or Savannah to Orlando as the case may be you can PM myself or Trav_r 45 and we can exchange meeting info.

Added to the $1800 from WeSTOC, we're at over $3500 for the year. That's gotta make ST-Owners and STOC among the higher contributors.
Just an FYI: here's (http://ride4kids.com/) a link to the 2007 Ride 4 Kids annual report. Note that >80% of the funds raised go to support research and such. That's a high percentage for any charity. This is really important work, and there has been tremendous success. When this charity was started in '84, Pediatric Brain Tumors were nearly always fatal. Not anymore. And _we_ have helped in the improvement.

The first one was a great test run to see what worked and what didn't. Look to see it improve next year and with that, possibly getting some publicity going.

Working on it. I've already gotten a write-up in my local newspaper's motorcycle column and an update, and I have irons in the fire for moto magazines with national distribution.
What I need to make it happen is for more people to submit photographs. Motorcycle magazines don't run stories without photos. I have received several good shots from the northern tier states, but not much since the ride headed back west.
I could also use some details about the official "end" of the ride. Help, anyone?

For those in the HSTA there is a great article in this month's STAReview magazine about Mike Traynor who started Ride For Kids and his motivations in starting this great fundraising organization. 45 million dollars raised in these 25 years. its an inspiring read. my copy just arrived in the mail today but it may be accessible at www.ridehsta.com i'm not sure.

Bones, I've got some Southern pics, just need to get them off my camera. Where do I send the hi-res shots? Their 8M, do you want them pared down any?
Maybe you'd prefer low res shots initially and then I'll send hi res for whatever you think is useful?
Your choice. I can have them out tomorrow if you want.

Well, finally getting around to look'in at pics. Soooo . . . here's the first of three posts (I can only figure out how to get 5 pics in a post). Bones, if you or anyone else wants hi-res copies, I'm happy to email along anything that looks of interest.
#1 Pony Express (PE) tale continues:
- Neither rain nor hail nor sleet nor snow nor dead of night shall stay the Pony Express rider from his appointed rounds. SE of Nashville at the top of the Natchez Trace, went from dry road to a few beautiful flakes to a blizzard within about 3 miles.
- Lockhart, Texas at Dave's BBQ RTE. Joined up with clmixon to pick up the PE Bag from Tankereng to continue it's journey East across the South.
- Rider Grub at Smitty's BBQ, or what passes for BBQ in Texas. Note the FULL compliment of plastic wear (no fork). I understand Texans are prohibited by law from having anything with sharp points on the end - forks are a quadruple threat!
- Baton Rouge, LA, NEW state capitol. clmixon and Shuey in front of the NEW state capitol.
- Baton Rouge, LA, OLD state capitol.

#2 Pony Express (PE) tale continues:
- Another PE rest stop just South of Nathez, MS. clmixon reports that every "Yankee" who makes it down this way has to stop here. Unfortunately, Mammie's was closed. I wanted to see if she lived up to the hype of the building!
- Jackson, MS, Capitol. Shuey shows the colors. clmixon had to cut out about 30 miles South of Jackson as work was calling most of the afternoon. While getting pic taken, the whole Capitol square was filled with a calm and beautiful organ music playing Christmas hymns filled the city. Truly memorable.
- Natchez Trace NE of Jackson. Rode a few miles of the Trace heading out of town as I turned Eastward. Beautiful colors, beautiful day, and I had it all to myself! :D Feeling really rich.
- Montgomery, AL, SE Corner, Dec 15, 2008. The lady walking is the wife of an Alabama elector who's taking this pic on his way in to vote and officially elect Barack Obama, President of the United States. There were actually 3 of them who each took a picture with my camera, each arguing that the others didn't know what they were doing handling such complicated electronics and that they didn't even know how to vote. The final picture was taken by a gentleman who stated he was the only one of the three who hadn't made up his mind yet who he was going to vote for! ;) Yea . . . right! Nice people and a piece of history in the making.
- Montgomery, AL, the first "White House" of the Confederacy. An extra capitol, on the way, thrown in at no extra charge! :D

#3 Pony Express (PE) tale continues:
- Lakewood, FL. Highest point in Florida at 345 feet. On the way to a rider rest stop in Niceville, FL. Shuey and hotel 179 carry the PE Bag to Tallahassee and meet up with benbucktoff who rode down from the Atlanta area.
- Tallahassee, FL, West side. Shuey, benbucktoff and hotel 179.
- Tallahassee, FL, East side. benbucktoff, hotel 179 and Shuey handing off the PE Bag before heading out . . . for a BBQ stop! :D Afterwhich, benbucktoff heads North and hotel 179 and Shuey head back West, ending their part of the adventure.
