I have a Shubereth Concept now and am looking to replace it. I love the flip-up style helmet and the flip-down sun visor. I hate that it is a very loud helmet - earplugs are required.

On the Nolan, how well does the tinted drop down sun visor work? How loud is the helmet?

Load as any. I hear some diffence between the N100E and the X-1002 and quiter than the Symax. But its all reletive anyways. All flips are to some degree noisier. What matters is the ear plugs and wind/air direction. When xm radio is going and plugs are in, I can't hear my own horn and I don't have xm turn up that high.

There have been some complaints on sport-touring.net that the tinted visor rubs against the clear visor, subsequently marring the clear visor....

That's what's happening to my visor. The tinted visor has rubbed against the clear one and scratched it up pretty good. I emailed Nolan and asked if the warranty would cover this. They emailed back saying to talk to the company I bought it from.

Other than the scratching on the clear visor, I really like it. It is nosier than my Shoei RF1000 but it is also a flip up.

I've got enough time with mine to offer the following.

The VPS system works at being a sunshade, but it does abrade the clear shield. In my case the abrasion is just below my natural line of sight, so it's no biggie. Being able to see your instruments through the clear bottom of the shield is great. My biggest knock against the helmet is the noise. Without the VPS system in place it's tolerable, with the VPS system installed, even with 32 db reduction plugs it's too loud for a 12 hour day. The shield replacement system sucks compared to my RF 900. A big plus is the ease of speaker/mic installation, and the removable liner. The stability of the helmet with the chin bar up or down is about the same up to a tested 85 mph. Plus. The thing weighs the same as my wifes N100e classic. Minus. The X"lite" is a misnomer. I paid about 150.00 more for the 1002 than a N100 and got a "slightly" better helmet, not worth the money IMO. I'm still looking.

You can address all the warranty issues to CIMA, 866-2HELMET or helmets@aol.com, NOLAN importer....

I looked at the Nolan at the Chicago Motorcycle show and thought it was pretty neat as well. Then at the IBA meeting in Omaha, I saw a Caberg hemet which I thought was even neater because the sun visor was built into the helmet and flipped down like a pilot's visor. The sun visor doesn't touch the regular visor at all and you can flip up the helmet and still have the sunshield down

Bought mine from Aerostich and just got it a few days ago because they were backordered. I've worn it once or twice and it seems pretty quiet compared to the Nolan. I think I read somewhere in the booklet that it's a Schuberth lid and probably licensed from them. DOT certified as well.

Hi,

I have been using a Nolan 100 for 3 years now. I am very satisfied with it comfort vise and I love the flip up concept. I must say though that it is a noisy helmet and I always have to use earplugs if I go on the highway.

I've had my Nolan 100e about a week. The flip face helmets are the ONLY way to go for me. I wear glasses and it's nice to not do the juggling act of removing glasses, donning helmet, squeezing in glasses, putting on gloves, etc... I like that the shield locks in different positions.

The noise is as loud as most of the helmets I've tried in the $250 and under range. The chin strap is further back and is taking a bit to get used to being so close to the larynx.

For $25 I can get the upgrade for the sun visor and might do that sooner or later. Seems like it's cheaper than the alternative X-lite which costs $150 more and apparently isn't lighter.

I'll be using ear plugs regardless of helmet if I'm on the highway.

The X-lite is more expensive because it's construction. It's been available for years in Europe, but CIMA didn't import it due to the higher cost....

But people were complaining that the N100 is the polycarbonate helmet (apparently not safe... ) and that the competition (mainly Schuberth) has composite helmets. Some dealers wouldn't purchase the N100 just for that reason.

So the decission was made to bring the X-1002, even though the price would be higher.

I haven't ridden in neither Schuberth or Jarrow (or whatever name it has currently). The Concept doesn't fit me. I agree with the comment about the sunshield on the Jarrow. A friend of mine has it, we rode a trip together and he had the sunshield advantage when both our flips were up....

But, the N-100 definatelly is more aeordynamic when open and the weight stayes centered, where Jarrow shifts it higher and forward when open. I wonder if owners agree. I felt it anyway.

BTW here is what I posted from CIMA , on the S-T.N, regarding the sunshield shafing issue ....

Can you post an answer on this board saying that we replace the
scratched shields for anyone who asks for it? We are talking to the
factory about possible fixes.
No wind tunnel testing could show this a s a problem

Fred,
I am trying to find the thread on Sport-touring.net re:the scratching of the visor. I ordered another visor under warranty and received it today. In that thread there were some people using some material to prevent the VPS visor from scratching the other visor. I keep searching STn and can't seem to locate it.....it's driving me nuts!

Thanks,
steve

Try here.....

BTW, the X-lite is a bit more oval than the N100/E...so the fit may be different for some.

The one I have is called a "Jarrow". Before that, they were know as the "Arrow" helmet. All of the flip-ups I've tried; Schuberth, Caburg, Nolan, etc. are all louder than one-piece full-faced helmets. I love the convenience so much however, that I can negate the extra noise by using ear plugs.

I will never buy another flip-up without the built-in sun visor. It is so cool to be able to close or open the sun visor as conditions warrant. My only complaint about the Caburg is that over about 50mph (+ - ), the clear shield will close whether you want it to or not! I assume that this is typical of all shielded helmets?

One thing I've noticed on the Nolan 100e (without the sun visor) is that when the clear visor is up to allow air onto my face, it blocks the vent at the top of the helmet. When I put the visor all the way down, I notice a significant difference in cooling up there. My concern is would the sun visor, which I don't antipate using super frequently, block the air flow?

With the clear visor slightly open, I've noticed that it's optimal in letting in some air, not fogging and allowing the top to be cool. So there is a happy medium.

I have a large Silver X-1002 that I wore for about a month that I will sell for half or less than what a new one costs or make an offer if interested. Will pay shipping charges also.

I liked it, but have always had Shoei full face and have gone back to one, the reason for trying to get rid of the Nolan, and also to get it our of the garage before it gets damaged sitting on the shelf.
