Since I made a comment on another thread about cleaning hemets, I thought I'd share my experience.
I was on another forum and I was asking about how to clean a helment properly. As it happens someone gave me a very good tip. Basically get some laundry detergent (about 1/10 or less of what you'd use on a small load of washing) and then fill your bath with luke warm water.
Put your helmet in to soak for a little while and then take it out and rub in the detergent into the lining. Rinse it and then shake it around with water in for a little while. Once you think the helmet has be cleaned enough (10 minutes should suffice), it's time to fully rinse. I filled the tub up again and left the helmet in there for 30 minutes.
I then left it outside during the day to dry off with the lining pulled out (to get better air flow). It was also suggested that stuffign the helmet with a towel increases the drying time. I didn't bother with this.
I was skeptical about this technique but I was getting an itchy head after riding so I thought it'd be a good idea!! It worked beautifully. It also smells very fresh now!!
BTW, be carefull with the amount of detergent since it can be an irritant.
