Has anyone out there installed the Helibar risers on thier 1300 and if so was it difficult. My dealer quoted me $85.00 and I thought maybe I would attempt it myself. Thanks for any input.

Rob,
Save the $85 and use it for gas.
I've put Heli's on my VFR and MC Larry Risers on the ST1300. Both were very easy and required basic tools and a torque wrench.

Pete, next time we get together on a Thu M&G or for a ride I'd like to sit on your ST and compare the position with my stock one... I am comfortable with the stock riding position, but I want to know what I am missing :) if anything.

I can say removal is quite easy......I took mine off (LOL). Cant imagine actual installation is hard. I say 1 hours time at most. Just cover the gas tank completely.

It was simple and the helibars came with very thorough instructions.

Rob,
Save your money and do it yourself. I installed MC Larry's riser plate and it can't be much different than the Heli. I took my time and finished in an hour. The biggest problems I had were removing the stock plate because the bolts were very tight and getting the nuts started when installing the new plate. Be sure and cover your tank as Sport Tourer mentioned and get a helper if possible, an extra set of hands can be mighty useful when putting everything back together.

In the search section above type in 'heli bar installation". There is alot of info to utilize. It really isn't a problem at all. I did it myself in less that an hour.

I'd also suggest putting some duct tape on the top surface of your handlebars 'cause, as I found out, it's easy to scratch them while working in close quarters.

Rob,
Be very very careful not to over-torque the bolts - the 50mm long ones...

I did and I snapped them. Replaced them with high tensile bolts. These long ones with the shaft fit through a hard plastic or rubber sleeve in the triple clamp that provides a small amount of flex. This can be misleading. It made me think they were not tight enough (and I was using too large a wrench - silly me).

Thanks John for the tip. I just got a new torque wrench and finally have something to use it on.

Be very careful when reinstalling the bolts! Make sure they are not cross-threaded. A dab of grease may help. I used a torque wrench (AKA dork wrench) to make sure they are to spec. When each pair of bolts is installed, torque 'em again to make sure. The cables and wiring have enough slack and do not need to be modified.
I LOVE my Helibars!!!
Combined with my Corbin Canyon saddle, it is the ultimate setup for the ST!

DID IT LAST MONTH--JUST GRAB ONTO THE NUTS AND DON'T DROP-EM. OH, AND DON'T ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS--DON'T I REPEAT DON'T OVER TIGHTEN AND BOLTS-ESPECIALLY THE STOCK ONES ON THE INSIDE-COVERED PORTION OF THE NEW RISER. tHE BOLT IS APPARENTLY VERY SOFT AND WILL TWIST AND BREAK--7 DAYS FOR A NEW ONE. i DO LOVE THE NEW POSITION--GO FOR IT.

I put mine on myself-not hard once I got the right tools. Well worth the effort! Love the Heli-bars! :biker:
