I tried ear buds... didn't like them. Have digital headphone speakers that I altered to fit in helmet and they work/sound great! Will be putting in my Autocom this week though. :)

I had XM Radio hooked up to my BMW R1150GS, listening to it thru Etymotics ER6 earbuds. The mounting hardware for the XM was really slick, a setup produced by Hoon Hardware, essentially a shelf that screwed on top of the clutch reservoir.
I've only had the ST1300 for less than two weeks and haven't hooked up the XM yet. Any suggestions on mounting gadgets for a Roady2 would be appreciated. :headbang:

The little man in my head sings to me sometimes...yes you do, when he isn't yelling at me in that falsetto voice he.... stop it, uses when he's.. I said stop it.. angry. I do hate it when he tries to sound like Eric Clapton's guitar... no.. don't start that.. or Ginger Baker's drums... no please.... somebody help me, he's just started whistling a Lawrence Whelk retrospective...... I have to go take my meds now. Sometimes that helps. Or I could put on my helmet and turn up Zep. He hates that. :D

XM and StarComm w/Nolan flip helmets. Occasionally a CD player instead of XM.
I listen about 1/2 of the time riding.

An inexpense set of helmet speakers can be had, by purchasing a sony walkman headset. Pop out the speakers and put velcro on the speakers and your helmet and you are set. cost about $12.

J&M here too - and with fully moulded ear plugs, I just turn up the volume! They still sound good.

Yea, Mellow should be able to have a complete A/V system mounted on the Wing, including plasma TV and Satellite dish. It already has theater seating and surround sound. ;)

I didn't see a choice for don't have any speakers or sound system on the bike yet but I am looking. I have toyed with the idea of music on the bike but just don't seem to get around to it it just doesn't seem important enough. Its enough just to be out on the road and enjoy the sights and sounds around you ( like the wind noise) seriously I would like a music source but just haven't found the time to get one and install it.

Wow, I'm surprised that none of the ST's have mounted external speakers, like on Mellow's truck, er, Goldwing.
I have been doing tests on different ear plugs. I met Bluecrab at the BMW dealership opening here in Houston and he showed me the sony walkman headset mod he mentioned in this thread.
My concern however is that the speakers don't provide good enough quality of sound. So listening to dynamic music is very difficult, requiring one to crank it up so loud it's nearly painful.
The ear-buds I got, I thought would be quality considering they were the most expensive I've seen (maybe I haven't looked hard enough). But even with the Bass boosted, it's sounds very treble/tin-ish.
By contrast, I have some cheap $20 head phones that I use at work and LAN parties that cover the entire ear. They have really good depth. I suspect this is simply a matter of physics, the more surface area you have to push, the more dynamic and strong the sound wave can be.
Has anybody tried mounting large headphones?
STPilot, does the J&M allow you to actually hear the music in a quality manner?
Do the fancy Comm systems "listen" and adjust db automagically?
Am I just too picky?

Doob,
I think the quality is pretty good. However, there are going to be a lot of variables. Speed/wind noise; I have great sound until I hit about 60ish, so depending on how good your helmet is at reducing wind noise or where you have the wind shield positioned.... (I always ride with the windshield all the way down, it's loud after about 60) your sound quality is going to be reduced. I guessing that not everyone here is going to have as finely a tuned ear as you Doob. If you can, try to hook up with guys that have defferent set ups and try them to see the diefferences. Feel like running out here to Ca?:D:eek: :D

I can't believe I'm the only one to put 4 X 6 speakers behind the grills in the fairing. Mother Honda put all those little holes in each side of the fairing for something......maybe speakers??? I'm driving them with a Sony F 5710 in the left fairing pocket. It's the cheapest with BOTH an auxiliary input for an XM or iPod and a Sony Marine Remote XM-10 mounted on the clutch reservoir.
The learning curve was slow, but I could do it again in a day...no, make that a few hours... with an overnight for the resin to cure.
On the slab, it's like the radio in a convertible, perfectly fine, yet not like the stereo in the quiet of your home. At a campsite, it's nice sounding tunes. Changing stations and volume are right at your left hand. I'm putting the iPod in a RAM Aqua Box down by the steering head.
I'll be at WeSTOC. Stop by and let your ears check it out.

jnsgardner, I'd certainly like to see that setup, although I can invision it fairly well from your description. Unfortunately I live halfway across the U.S. It's actually about the same distance to drive to Chicago as it is to just go west out of my state (TX). Stick New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada between us and it's quite the trip. But I "really" hope that I can make that trip next year. It would be really awesome to make it up to ya'lls neck of the woods. Especially since Pilot said that I could play on his Bass rig. ;)
Pilot, I think you've got the right idea. I just need to see how many different setups I can tryout. I'm using a flip-face N100E, so it sucks at blocking out wind noise. But if I sit slightly slouched with my head bent down a little (but still easily looking forward) I can get a fairly quiet zone. Something that still surprises me is that the helmet really doesn't do much to isolate ambient noise. Some of the mid to lower frequencies get absorbed, but everything else seems to pass straight through the helmet. I guess the only way to really dampen the sound is to fill the helmet with sand, so much that it weighs about 30 pounds.
I don't want to battle with the ambient noise and get into a sound-creep situation where I'm constantly turning up the headset such that it is 120 db either. But I'll continue to see what people are wearing and see if I can find a better solution. If not I'm thinking more and more about modifying/replacing the cheek pads in my N100E so that I can fit some large over-the-ear headphones in it. Sealing around the ear should provide at least a little more isolation, and the larger speaker should be able to push the lower frequencies better.
I must admit that external speakers intrigue me since on the free way I'd be less concerned about "noise". But when camping I can't imagine too many people would be happy with my music selection (Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Gordian Knot, Porcupine Tree... to name a few).

Hey Doob... the one thing I like about the MyFi that I didn't have with the Roady besides volume controls on the front, is bass and treble controls :D I have the Autocom hooked up and it sounds pretty good up to 85-90 :D I have a Scorpion Exo-700 which are pretty noisy because they vent like nobody's business... but the speakers press right up to my ears ;)

Shure E4C's they keep the good "noise" in and keep the bad out. I can turn the volume down to about half of what it would be with regular headphones.

One word... BAEHR... Doesn't matter which model. I'm on my third set-up now and I've never heard better. Sirius sattelite running to MP3 w/ FM, then through small radio Shack amp to Baehr... Sound comes to you through Blaupunkt helmet speakers in stereo. About 1/2 volume at 75-80 MPH is perfect. Also convenience of hands-free cell... I understand that the Autocom's are good but I can't find a reason to try one...

Yessir, I've got the Shure E3Cs plugged into a Phillips 30gig mp3 player. They serve as earplugs to keep out the wind noise and a nice quiet volume can be set for listening. I just carry the player in the breast pocket of my jacket. Simple but effective.

I just got the Etymotics 6 today, fiddled around until I could figure out how to fit it properly in the ear. Tried all the sizes, different ways, etc. Finally got a combo that works. Blocks out external sound as good as any earplug, and plays music as well! Should work fine on the bike.
...now if I could figure out a way to get the darned things out of my ear...
