I just placed an order for this unit from amazon.com.
The price was too good to pass up so I finally pulled the trigger.
Haven't heard too much from anyone about this new (July) model.
Anybody have any experience with this puppy?
If so, what mounting farkle would you reccomend?
Couldn't find any dementions so I hope this thing isn't as big as my TV

Kind of new I guess. I'd recommend a ram mount arm, motorcycle larry mount, holder and cable. All except MC Larry can be bought at www.cyclegadgets.com (http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/RAM/ram.asp?prod=RAM-SP26)

I've heard the psuedo 3D isn't all it's cracked up to be but I do like the new layout they are using the text information.
If you have a shelf consider using Dick Seng's mount for the 2600/2700.

I used a rammount on the shelf with this but it just moved a little too much. I use a lot of the rammount stuff and love it but off the shelf the GPS just had too much leverage from it's weight. Dick's mount is great and is very stable.

I used one in Best Buy yesterday. I have a 276C so my comparison is from that standpoint.
The screen's a good size and fits nicely between your handlebars. Can't comment on mounts, but I used the MotorcycleLarry RAM ball and a RAM cradle from gpscity.com for my 276C. They work great.
The entire US was loaded, so that's nice. The touch screen ability to pan the map was very nice -- that's a big advantage over the 276C and Quest button interface. With Garmin's button interface implementation (276C/Quest), you must move the arrow cursor to the screen edge before the map pans. With the touch screen (2610/2720) you just touch and drag -- faster and more intuitive.
However the 2720 was significantly slower on screen redraws when panning at max detail level. My 276C is always subsecond on redraws, even at max detail. The 2720 was variable but sometimes took several seconds.
Another thing I didn't like was the 2720 would not display full road detail at the 1.2 mile scale -- you had to zoom in closer to see full detail. That's even with "max detail" selected on the config. The 276C shows full road detail at the 1.2 mile scale, enabling a good overview of surrounding small roads when zoomed back.
Those are two pet peeves of mine -- redraw performance when panning and displayed detail when zoomed back. Other users might not even notice.
Overall the 2720 looks like a fine unit. If you don't mind hard wired power and like the touch screen, it's great. If you want battery operation and like buttons over a touch screen, the 276C or Quest/Quest2 are solutions. I personally like the 10,000 point configurable tracklog on the 276C and Quest units (5x the 2610/2720), but some people don't use the tracklog.
The 2720 has an improved TFT screen over the 2610. It should be daylight viewable without a backlight, similar to the 276C and Quest.
If anyone is sitting on the fence about a modern mapping GPS, I strongly encourage getting one. They are really great and make finding fuel, restaurants, new roads, etc. very easy. You can do route planning on your PC and download to the GPS, or upload your tracklog and/or waypoints to a PC mapping program.
I've gotten so used to mine, I'd give up my Sargent seat before my GPS :)

Thanks joema for the thurough review. Sounds like you really rung her out.
Glad to see BestBuy is stocking the 2720 as that means I should be getting mine in the mail very soon. Thanks again for your report.

If you have a shelf and want to mount the GPS there consider a Dick Seng mount. I really like mine of the rammount setup I had last time. Less wobble.

I've decided NOT to get a 2720 for one very simple reason: it doesn't ship with, nor interface with, Mapsource. I'm hooked on using the PC, with it's large screen, keyboard and mouse, to play around building maps, defining waypoints, and the like, and then uploading them to my 2610. Doing the same thing on the tiny screen and ABCDE "keyboard" on the GPSR itself is tedious work.
The 3D interface looks cool, but doesn't appear to offer any real advantage. The spoken street name feature sounds cool, but I normally turn off the voice anyway and just use the beep to remind me to look at the screen.
The one feature of the 2720 that I would pay for is the new screen. It should be much easier to read outdoors in bright sunlight. But given the lack of mapsource, I'd recommend a 2610 with a 2 GB CF card if you need the entire US loaded at one time. If Garmin ever releases a 2710, I'll consider it, but until then it's a 'no sale.'

You do realize the upgrade to CN 7 costs $150, over and above what you pay for the 2720? My personal opintion (and that's all it is) is that the 2610 is a much better buy. If you buy a 2610 now, the upgrade to CN7 is free.

That's true. I said "If you buy a 2610 now, the upgrade to CN7 is free." My point is that if you buy a 2610 + 2 GB CF card + (free upgrade to) CN7, you get a better deal on than you do buying a 2720.

Yeah Charlie,
I found that site for my Etrex I bought. They have XM2GO for 196.00. I found it doing a price search on bizrate.com.

I just installed a 2720 on a ST1300 last week. Looks and works great. But you need to order their motorcycle cable for 50.00. It will have a 2.5 mm connector for your audio and it also has the 12volt dc cable built in.
I mounted in on a ram mount between the handle bars on the heli bar.
I think I took a pic. If you want it let me know and I will email it to you.

Thanks Joe but I've been a happy owner of my 2720 for about a month now. It got me to WeSTOC and back so I'm pretty pleased with it so far. Mounted mine with M/C Larry mount, ram ball and Garmin M/C mount. Works terrific.

Works terrific.Golly HRC, If I'd realized that was a 2720 instead of a 2610, I would have asked you for a demo when I was there at WeSTOC!
Garmin also offers Mapsource Trip and Waypoint Manager software (http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp?sku=010%2D10215%2D04) for $30, but it apparently only has a rudimentary base map and not a detail map. Don't know how usefull that would be without detail maps.

Don't you find that mounting it there makes it a PITA to get your key in and out?
I gave up on that location because it was getting on my nerves.

Don't you find that mounting it there makes it a PITA to get your key in and out?Yes, at first until I played around with the ram balls (pun) until I got it positioned where I can live with and get my key out without much drama. I'm kind of a tidy/neatnick so the shelf and reservoir mounts are not an option for me. IMHO between the bars looks like it belongs there.

I picked them up at the dealer....... in Spain :p:
You might try David Silver Spares in the UK, but you better really really like them cuz they aint cheap

Mine are mettle badges that are applied with 3M tape. They are the ones available on the PanEuro ABS model. Non ABS gets a decal. Badges go for around $100USD.
