Anyone have any suggesstions on a good pair of riding shoes or boots. I really would like something that is not as heavy as some of the advertised "riding boots." Something light and comfortable, but will provide the appropriate amount of protection if needed. The best of both worlds in other words. Thanks for any suggesstions.

While I would never recommend wearing low-quarter style shoes for riding because of their lack of support and protection, I do like the two pairs of boots that I currently have. While not the lightest, but certainly not the heaviest, I especially like my Sidi OnRoad Sympatex boots. They're tall, but light, supportive and completely waterproof. The tall tops help protect the rider from some of the heat that comes back onto your legs. I also have a pair of Oxtar Matrix boots that aren't quite as tall. They are a bit lighter, offer good support and are waterproof--lined with GoreTex.
There are some other boots out there, like waterproofed hiking boots, but they have laces, which, IMHO, present a possible safety hazard, and provide no protection above the ankle.
You can probably pick up a pair of the Oxtar Matrix boots from Newenough.com for around $135.00 if they are still in supply.
These new ones from Alpinestar recently got a great review in Motorcyclist and MCN too.

I was thinking about trying out a pair since they look nice enough to be able to wear to work.

Well I bought my very first pair of riding boots not long ago and hate to tell you that they are Harley Davidson boots. Yea, I know. But they are very comfortable, have great grip because of the tread on the soles and would provide good protection in the event of a lay down. I have feet wide enough to walk on water and this is the first pair of shoes I have bought that were that comfortable.

Oxtar Matrix for full length boots! :bow1: If you just want some ankle high deals, I loved my Icon Super Duty boots... real comfortable and you can wear them puppies all day!

I have alpinestar boots, too. Not sure of the model. I used to wear work boots, but wanted more ankle protection. They're not waterproof, but are comfortable on the bike and offer good shift lever and brake feel.

Icon "Motorhead" boots are great www.ride-icon.com. They feature Vibram soles (replaceable). I love mine. They probably aren't the lightest but they've made it 12,000 miles with hardly a scratch.
You may have noticed that I advertise for Icon. I love their gear. I understand that it may not be for everyone.

I've got a pair of these on order, hope to see them this week.

I'm hoping they'll be a bit cooler than my Alpinstar Stage, which are a great boot, just too hot, especially for hiking at the end of the day. The rest of the Kochman boot lineup can be found here (http://www.topgearmotorcycle.com/boots1.html) . They've been around awhile and supply boots for the BMW clothing line. They're getting rave reviews from the Euro touring crowd so I thought I'd give them a try. I'll post a review asap.

Another vote for Sidi's OnRoad boots. Very comfy, don't feel heavy and my feet never feel hot or cold and they stay nice and dry in rain. Sole is good on slippery surfaces too.

I'd have bought the Sidi's in a heartbeat if I could have found a vendor who would work with me. They were first on my list....... but there are some supply problems in my part of the world.
