View Full Version : Pump for Filling Tires

A couple of nights ago I went to check the air pressure in my tires and add a little, and discovered that my trusty bicycle pump that I've been using with the GL1800 would not fit in the tighter design of the ST1300 wheel.
I went down to the gas station and squeezed their pressure hose in to add a few pounds. it just barely worked in the tight space.
What do you guys use to fill your tires? I went to Walmart and none of their pumps had a better nozzle. I'd like to have something at home and not be dependent on a gas station.
THANKS for the help!

I got one of these (http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=2918&Category_Code=TTools) from CST. Fits nicely in the left fairing pocket. Just clip off the alligator clips and add your plug of choice. Never leave home without it.

The front tire is not much of a problem for me. But that rear valve stem is a pain in the arse. I'll be getting new tires next week. I'm definitely having a 90 degree valve stem put on the rear.

I carry a "Cyclepump" in my left pocket w/ plugs, works great but a bit expensive.

For gas STation fills with a STraight hose.
Rear tire: Remove the left saddlebag.
With bike on the centerSTand turn the wheel 'til the STem is accessible. Notice the large oblong hole in the hub? Adjacent to that is a round hole in the outer hub. Pass the air hose through the round, through the oblong and clip/hold onto the STem. Pump away !!
Or make and use one of these:

DWJ..
Had the same issue this morning..Filled up the front fine (used one of those cheap walmart do hickey pump fillers (with the flashing light deals in the front)
But I could not get the air nozzle on the back because of the latching mechanism was too long...I'll get to a tire shop thos afternoon for now and then Donds suggestion is very helpfull with the correct nozzle attachment..
Until new tires come (soon enough..Have 7400 miles in 2.5 months  ) along and then its a 90 degree valve stem for sure..
Let's say I buy a regular air compressor (maybe 2.5lb pancake type) that takes various air attachments, any suggestions on the air filler nozzle of choice???
Suggestion:
I used to buy an air chuck from Harbor Freight (it isn't posted on their web site; but, I have purchased a couple of them) and use it to replace the end of one of the cheap air fillers (hose attached to a handle/trigger at one end and a metal tube with 2 air chucks on the other end. Really sorry I have no picture!).
The one I get from HF looks like the one Don fabricated (link posted above); but, without the trigger control.
Now I use one of them without the center dohicky (for depressing valve's spring) for setting the bead when changing tires and another on the end of my air hose for filling.
I check the psi with a separate air guage because I don't trust the cheap ones.

I use a Husky air compressor that I bought from Home Depot - it was on sale for $89, I think. I am very happy with it. I also bought (Wal-mart) a tire pressure gauge attachment that allows me to check the pressure while I am pumping air. I will post a picture of the attachment when I get home tonite.

At home I use a bicycle pump. Only takes a handfull of pumps to top off.
