View Full Version : Sargent Seat Problem?

I ordered a Sargent seat four months ago. For the first three months the seat was great. Much better than the stock seat. Last month, I went on a 3000 mile trip, and I noticed the seat started feeling like the stock seat.
The problem is the foam seams to be either compressing or deteriorating, and as a result I can feel the hard base below the foam in virtually all parts my butt. I find my self shifting around to get comfortable even on a short 150 mile ride. Let me preface this by explaining that I am 5'8" tall and weigh 165 pounds, so weight is not an issue. I called Sargent last week and got a lame answer. Supposedly they warranty their seats for one year against defects.
Has anyone experienced the same or similar problem with this after market seat?

I'm quietly in the same corner you are on this but I actually think it's the opposite. The foam is too hard and starts causing cramping and soreness. For me it's not the same as the stock. I'm pretty sure the foam isn't compressed but it won't compress maybe enough and it feels the same way. IMO.

That's a shame you guyz. Curt and Peter, how many miles on your Sargents now?
I almoST got one when they firST announced availability but by then I'd gotten another brand.

I logged 3000 miles in one trip last month from South Florida to Marysville Ohio and back. Total miles on this seat 7000 miles. We will see what Sargent has to say tomorrow. I am going straight to the top to get a satisfactory resolution.

I've probably put on close to 10,000 miles on since then. A trip to Denver and a trip to Plano/Llano was 5000 miles just between those two trips.

Curt;
I have about 12k on the Russell, it's been great and holding up very well. The only negative I can see, the pocket makes it more difficult to slide off side to side.

I've tried a Russel and that was may opinion also. Do you cover your seat in the rain? Russell I think makes a note of this but I'm not sure how important it is. Not sure if Sargent suggests the same thing.

Since it has a metal spring inside I suspect it would rust if rain ever soaked through. I bought the rain cover from them and keep it with the bike at all times.
I can't image the seat ever breaking down, but I suppose the spring could eventually sag after a long time. I have never felt butt burn with a Russell, but do get tired legs from the pressure on the upper thigh. This is caused by the wings sticking out to the side. I can't remember anybody else talking about this problem so must just be me.
I never ride aggressively enough to hang my butt off the side so this isn't an issue. I have read several books on riding and some have mentioned that hanging your butt off while riding on the streets isn't necessary. Lee Parks says to just move your upper body to the side that your turning into. On the other hand maybe some of you are able to ride aggressively enough to need to do this. YMMV

I'm not a big butt mover either. ;) I tend to use my upper body.
I do get leg soreness after a long ride from being on my upper thighs but I'm trying to get use to it.
Thanks for the input.
