Thought maybe we could share any pics or links to pics here from the 2005 IBR. Anyone else here headed there for the finish?

Here's a link to the Star-Traxx site to keep track of about 15 of the riders.

When are you going to be up there? I'm about 90% sure I'll be heading back up to CO next week. Your Rule-The-Rockies ride looks like fun so I thought I might give it a try. My plan is to light in Gunnison and run it backwards.

What day is the IBR going to finish?

I just checked the star-traxx site and it seems as if the riders being tracked are going all over the place. I understand that they my be going to bonus points that are all over, but those guys heading west ahave a long way to got to get to the next checkpoint (if its right on the star-traxx site - which has a weird date for the next check point 9/29). Does anyone know when the next check point really is?

The riders will leave Denver today, return to it as the first checkpoint on Friday evening, depart for the second checkpoint outside Portland, Maine, and return to Denver for the finish by the end of the eleventh day.

I'm putting the Higdon report link in here. I'm not try to torque Paul I just want all this in one thread for my own record keeping so I can use this thread as my jump point in the morning. Sorry Paul.

Bob Higdon's daily reports can be found here.
They are a must read.

I haven't seen a list yet. I know Peter Heesh rides an ST but had to back out due to other commitments.

Thanks for posting these Charlie. I see Eddie James leaving and a couple others I recognize. Do you know if Voni Glaves is in the rally? Wasn't sure if she just came for the start or if she was riding.

With 11 hours roughly to get to Denver I did an overlay of the Star-Traxx map and an 11 hour drive time in Streets and Trips. I then change the perspectives to roughly match each other. This gives you an idea of how close they will be to getting to Denver in the alloted time. The blue dotted line marks 11 hours from Denver. The bikes represent, well, the bikes. Looks like some are pretty close and there's at least one that better hurry.

There's 3 ST1100's and 3 ST1300's.

Shane Smith, ST1100 (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2005/73-1.html) Shane has the top mileage (5,666 miles) out of all 90 riders after Leg 1 and is running 9th.

Thane Silliker, ST1100 (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2005/65-1.html)

Alan Barbic, ST1100 (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2005/7-1.html)

Bill Thweat, ST1300 (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2005/82-1.html)

Peter Leap, ST1300 (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2005/68-1.html)

Mike Berlien, ST1300 (http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2005/87-1.html)

I think I got my Peter's mixed up and Peter Heesh probably doesn't ride on ST. It was Peter Leap I was thinking of. I got a chance to meet him in Omaha. Nice guy and his setup was very cool. Uses his Treo 650 with the Bluetooth to get internet connectivity to his laptop when he needs it. He can leave the phone in it's secure waterproof mount on the bike, pop the trunk and get access to the internet on his laptop.

Here's the current standings for leg one:

Wow, there sure are a lot of FJR's in the running. Of course the #1 used bike is the BMW, but reading the reports it seems like they are also breaking down a lot, actually more than anything else. Of all thebikes listed, I'd have to give a special extra little bit of respect for the guy in 16th place riding a Sportster, I've ridden those bikes and even with the new models with rubber mounted engines they are still brutal for long distance riding. It'll be interesting to see how the results turn out and if BMW continues to dominate. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that in the next running you'll see a lot more ST's and that the top ten list won't have quite as many w's in it.

That's Brett Donahue, owner of St. Cloud Harley Davidson. I was able to compete against him this year in the Bonzai Run (http://www.glmc.org/bonzai-results-2005.jpg) (where we tied but I think Brett got 4th because we rode more miles) and in the Minnesota 1000 (http://www.teamstrange.com/2005/mn1k/results.htm) (where I managed to place 2nd in Sport Touring somehow but not in the same category as Brett because he has a fuel cell so he's in expert).

He has spent a lot of time over the winter setting the bike up. Here's his corner on their website: Brett's Corner (http://www.american-thunder.com/?owner) Brett's a good guy and seems to have the knack. He definetely isn't timid about putting on the miles. I've seen him make some long runs out to some of the most remote points over the year. I think he will do well barring any mechnical issues. He's definetely in the running to have a good showing. I wish him well on the rest of the rally.

Thanks for the link. That guy really did a good job of making a long distance mount out of a sportster. I wish him the best in this rally, maybe he can come in 2nd or 3rd with a couple of ST's in front of him of course :D

I teased Brett at Omaha to put up a Smartire system for the raffle. He actually was glad to do it. That's a big ticket item for a raffle. Of course I was hoping I won it but that wasn't the case.

Alan Barbic's the man alright ... he was featured along with his ST1100 in Rider last year. We'll see how well these ST's stack up.

There are a bunch of pictures from the Maine Checkpoint courtesy of Bob Lyskowski.

I talked to Peter Leap who is doing well, his bike was just going in for a new set of Metzlers, he had new ones put on before he left for Denver! He cerainly has a very together set up and as a 'tech head' has upgraded to a Tablet PC on the tank bag.

On a more scary note a guy got loose on a Blue ST1300, did not meet him but would like to have, into a Jersey Barrier, LHS of the pannier is badly scraped up, mirror cowel is gone and a 1/4 inch flat spot is now in the crash bar. He was fine though so I guess his leg was just about out of the way!

Hey guys ... Shane Smith (ST1100 !!) in 6th place ... Yeah !!!! :D

"Shane Smith, continuing to plot routes with a sledge hammer, broke out of a tie with George Barnes and Brian Boberick, gained one position in the standings to sixth, but lost more than 600 points to Owen on the leg. Unless he's stopped soon by rogue elephants on the highway, Shane is on a pace to set a record for total miles ridden in the event. We try to tell him that the points matter more than the miles, but by then he's already in the next county."

Also notice that Peter Hoogeveen, the perenial 2nd place finisher from Canada is running and in 10th place ... very interesting. Peter is now riding an FJR; he one lost this race by 2 friggin' points ! ... 2 points ! ... he was riding a CBR-XX in those days. He's a bike mechanic when not doing this :D

There were a couple up at the IBR checkpoint in a Maine a few days ago. Looked like they would sustain some serious damage in the event of a small get off or parking lot drop. Nicely built but no where near the quality of Bimota.
