Has anyone tried wrapping the ST's pipes with insulative wrapping ie. "Cool It Thermotec Exhaust Insulation Wrap"?
I bought a product similar to what you describe and before I made the installation I covered the holes in the tip over covers and was able to eliminate most of the objectional heat. I will probably send the wrap back.
Heat on my ST is NO LONGER an issue!
Here is what I have done:
1. Cut large holes in the cowls.
2. Bought and installed the Honda fairling deflectors.
3. Used foam to close up any holes around the frame/fuel tank/seat area. Heat was coming out from under the seat, the foam installation eliminated this heat.
4. Covered the holes in the tip over covers with abs.

Ceramic coated the inner and outer surface area of the exhaust headers, no hot spots, and less heat in that area. The verdict is still out as to the effect on the CAT's in the leading end of the mufflers. Had to replace mine due to one drop and it damaged the CAT's.

Phase 1, Drilled 1/4" holes in a grid pattern in both inner cowels, as in several dozen each. Result- gas tank no longer radiates heat, hot air from radiator exiting out of side cowl louvers is diluted with cooler air, big change!
Phase 2,-Covered frame aft of middle cowl and just above footpegs with 1/8" neoprene sheeting cut to fit and stuck on with contact cement. Don't forget to make holes for swingarm and rebound adjustment. Result- frame no longer radiates heat to lower legs and is only warm to the touch.
Phase 3, removed middle and lower cowls and wraped all exhaust pipes with Thermotec coolit wrap back to junction of two into one pipe. Used about 45' of 2" wide wrap. Result- feet ride in much cooler air now.
Total cost- $50 for wrap, $13 for neoprene, labor free.
Not much can be done about heat at the knees as they are so close to the cylinder heads. I made patterns of the frame coverings with heavy construction paper and then cut the neoprene from them.
