Has anyone installed the Sargents matching topbox backrest? My biggest question is how to get the old pad off the box. The box is too expensive to just start yanking and pulling on stuff. Any guildance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Poolie

Although I haven't tried I think its on with that 3M tape which should give up if you work at it gentley. Some heat may help.

The original pad on the topbox stays intact. The Sargent backrest pad is attached to the topbox pad with four bolts. You should have a paper template which is placed over the topbox pad so you know where to drill the holes. I have one but haven't bothered to install yet it.

Are you sure? The picture on Sargent's website looks like the existing pad has been removed. However, the instructions mention nothing about removal of the old pad. Just the paper template for the holes

IT's held on with gray double slicky tape. It'll peel off pretty easy.

Sorry Poolie My bad. :BDH:
I can't find the posting but it seems to me the pad was installed on top of the original topbox pad. Someone on ST-Owners or the MSN site installed the first one that came out and his first name is Ron. I would e-mail Sargent to confirm that you indeed have to remove the original pad. And I guess Sargent has to be more clear with their instructions eh?
This is the first picture I have seen of the pad off the topbox.
Did this exact install two weeks ago -- the existing backpad does have to come off (good riddance said my wife) and the new one goes on in its place. You'll want to get some peroxide or whatever you prefer to use to remove the gunk from the double-sided tape that holds on the original pad. Then put that template in place, measure it left/right/top/bottom to make sure it's centered, tape it in place, and drill away. Took no more than 20 minutes. My passengers love the improvement and it sure does look great matching the seat.
