That's cool that a guy on a ST won it, it's also impressive that he did it and didn't give up evewn though his home is flooded from Katrina and it would have been easy to give up citing family emergency, but he forged on and won the thing, and has become an inspiration to long distance riders everywhere.

Attached are a couple of pictures of Shane Smith messing with his ST1300 as the time of departure for the start of the IBA approaches. Please note the very fast silver color of his bike. The previous day I talked with Shane about tires and he was nice enough to walk over with me to my fast silver bike and look at my ME880 rear tire with over 8,000 miles on it. We were discussing the tire wear for the ME880 rear because he was scheduled to mount the same type of ME880 at a future checkpoint during the rally. I am thrilled that I was able to discuss bikes with Shane at a quiet time the day before the rally.

Congrats to Shane Smith!
I'd love to have a list of the mods Mr. Smith has made. From Alan's photo of Shane's bike there are several apparent, including PIAA lights and what look to be "SteedSticks" pegs. Top box too, of course. The jacket covers much of the front cowl, so its hard to estimate what's there. Anyone know what he has?

Has some cool mirrors on top of the ST mirrors too... I like the lights on the wings! :)

OK, so it looks like an ST1300 ... the commentary during the rally had him riding an ST1100 but really it doesn't matter ... in an ocean of BMW's and not a few GL1800's and FJR's ... Shane did the almost impossible ... Congrats !!!
