Correction. Shane is on an ST1300 not an ST1100 like is posted on the site. I thought they announced it wrong tonight but I confirmed with Shane that he is on an ST1300.

Congratulations to everyone who finished, my respect to all of you. Thumbs up to all who attempted but failed to finish whether due to physical exhaustion or mechanical failure. I feel humbled by all of you. :bow1: :bow1: :bow1:
An ST is an ST, color and engine displacement don't matter. Wahooo!! That having been said, the 1300 :headbang: .

There are many reasons other than bike breakdown that causes some not to finish. I counted 44 BMW's entered, 10 dropped out, about 25%; 18 Hondas, 2 dropped out, about 10%; (all 4 ST1300 finished) 9 Yamahas, 1 dropped out, about 10%.
I'm always in awe of people who push the limits of endurance, tri athletes, marathoners, martial arts, iron butt riders, Baha, Dakar, ect. They have my utmost respect, I wish I had their resolve. :bow1:

So if 1 of 2 Harleys dropped out (bottom end ???) then it's a 50% failure rate ... ha ha ha :D :D :D ... oh boy that tickles !
Seriously, the BMW's have a rear-end problem ! .... :p: :p:

I am in awe of anyone that can do the Iron Butt. Way to go Shane Smith you have made us proud. Does anyone know what changes (if any) Shane has made to his bike? What seat, windshield, tires, etc. is he using on his bike.

Congrats to everyone who finished an 11 day, 13,000 mile ride. My bride and I just returned from an 800 mile. 2 1/2 day ride and I am the king of the monkey butts. My backside is shot. How in the world do they stay on a bike for that amount of time? Do they have Lazy-Boys installed?
Seriously, it's terribly to pay that amount of money for an ST and then have to invest in a Russell Day-Long to enjoy it. Any other suggestions?

I'm a lightweight and never really had a problem with the stock seat supporting my skin-and-bones. But I checked out a sheepskin and liked it. Got one from Alaska Leather and love it.
It's extremely comfortable :butt1: No sore spots, no monkey butt.
It's also significantly cooler than the stock seat in hot weather. I'm told it's warmer than a stock seat in cold weather, but I haven't figured that out for myself yet.
I do 200 - 300 mile days, not 10 consecutive 1,000+ mile days, so YMMV.
Medium, black, single piece. $45 to my door. Ask for your STOC discount...good for 10% off. http://www.alaskaleather.com/
What is the link that shows Shane as the winner on the ST1300 so I can hassle my BMW and Harley friends?
What seat is he using on that bike? Whatever it is, I want one.

I pretty much assume to spend for an aftermarket seat on any bike I may buy in the future, the 1500/1800 Wing being the one exception.
Even BMW's stock seats are just as bad as anyone else's, and have you ever sat on a Concours stock seat ??? that wouldn't even make it out of the show room for me ;)
So yeah, it's just one of those things ... :D

I've had a similar problem and years ago bought a $15 beaded seat for my long distance rides on my BMW's. I've just bought another one for the ST at Americade and convinced a LARGE man at the booth to try one. They attach to the bike using four small bungee cords and plastic coated hooks. The fact is sitting on the seat allows no air to circulate UNDER you, cooking your skin. The beaded seat lifts you off the seat without a comfort problem and air flows through it cooling your butt. NO maintance on them for years. The down side is that it lifts you up about1/2". I tried the sheepskin and I found it a problem in that it was always wet in the rains.
I would still like to know what kind of seat the Iron Butt guys use.
Does anyone know for sure??

... and do not forget about Thane Silliker on his Canada specification 1998 ST1100 with over 310,000 KL on it! Finished the IBR in 25th place for a GOLD MEDAL!

Beaded seat cover is the way to go. Allows air circulation. When you move and shift positions, contacts points change, helping blood circulation. You are not sitting in water, which can be cold and invite water ingress. When you sit on the bike after it has been sitting in the hot sun, there is no burning sensation as there would be with a bare seat.
These things are simply awesome. I made mine from a full size car seat cover - cut down to the size and shape I wanted. Just cut nylon strings and re-tie. Easy and cheap.

Has anoyone here tried the anti monkey butt powder? It's made in Canada but the Anti Monkey Butt Corporation (what a name huh?) and I htink it works pretty darn good. It's kinda like baby powders, ecept it has a few extra ingredients. I buy it from my local small shop for $7 a bottle, but you can buy it off their website cheaper, plus shipping. Here's the link to the Anti Monkey Butt website. (http://www.antimonkeybutt.com/index.html)

ST13 over the ST11 ... I ride an '02 ST11 and have found no need to 'upgrade' but have ridden the ST13. I found it to be a better handler as you say, the seat issue can be easily fixed - lots of choices incl. STOCK :)
The 1300 is more modern and more sport-oriented than the 1100 ... that also means it's less touring oriented, and some things were dropped: elastic hoders in the saddle bags, tank under the seat, it looks like sh*t without bags, things like that ... but it does handle close to a VFR though ... it's what YOU want ... there's a nice '02 in Charlotte ... :D

After a screwed up tire change in 1999 at the Florida checkpoint by a Honda dealer that ended my bonus hunting ability I swore I would not let anyone touch my bike or do any maintenance during the rally in 2001.
Rode the entire 2001 rally and did nothing butt add gas.
Mobil 1 and Metezeler 880's got to love them.

I hope you mean the bike and not the woman. Phyliss finished in 2001 and 1999. I don't know if there are more because the results aren't posted beyond 1999. Did she finish high in the standings? No. However if you think finishing the Ironbutt is trivial just try. Then try it when your her age.

I talked with Shane before the start of the Iron Butt and he was running Metzlers. We discussed the Metzlers because I am running the same tires, a Z6 on the front and a ME880 on the rear.

That is so funny- what a small world! I bought my jacket there over 15 years ago (alaska leather) Barb's kids go to the same school as my kids- how funny is that?
BTW- that place is less than 3 miles from my house LOL

I had a 1300 vtx and ran 14,000 on each set. I know my ST has bridgestone and can tell they will not last like my Daton's did on my VTX. What kind of miles do you get and not into speed but want to replace with something lasting and good. Thanks

My OEM Dunlop's went 16k miles. Probably not the best for twisties, and the front tire cupped, developing a significant head-shake by 10k if I let-go of the handle bars. Note, check other threads on the Dunlops if you want to look at them; apparently there are two versions of the "OEM" tire, one 5-ply, the other 3-ply.
I'm now running Metzler Z6's front and rear but only have 7K on them and can't really estimate, yet, how they'll hold up on my highway commute.
