Just picked up a set of Radio Shack's noise reducing earphones...
have not had a chance to see how much actual noise reduction
they will afford, but the audio quality of the drivers is excellent...
Lots of bass and the trebles are clear.. Here inside the house,
there seems to be a fair amount of noise reduction...
For 20 bucks, it is worth a test..

And the answer to noise reduction is???

I tried a pair out to WeSToc, basicly earplugs with holes in the middle for a plastic tube to go through. They really didn't work for me, the foam didn't compress as well as a good set of plugs to get deep enough to stay in the ear. For $20, it was worth a shoot.

I bought a pair yesterday at the local RS store. Have to agree with AZST1300 that they don't compress as well as a foam plug. They aren't as quiet as a real earplug but they do cut down on some noise, wind as well as the ST Whine, probably about 70% of what an earplug would do. I rode about 5 miles with them in and no music to evaluate their effectiveness.

Audio quality was acceptable to me as I don't expect great things in such a noisy environment. I used them with an Ipod.

Getting my helmet on over them was a little tricky because they do stick out a little bit bit but they stayed in with the helmet on.

All in all, worth the $20 for me.

Sony Earplug headphones work really well for me. You can look up "Sony MDR-EX70LP Earbud Headphones"

You have a choce of inserts for your ear size. Good audio response as well. ~$60 FWIR.

When I ride without music (commute times), I use regular foam earplugs from Longs Drugs. They work really well and you get ~15 pairs for $3. = 15ish weeks. I figure 4 sets a year = $12. Can't justify custom ones at $100 since they'll probably last a year or less.

Yeah, what everyone has said so far... The foam plugs that come
with the earphones really are not designed well... So.... I took a pair
of the yellow foam cylindrical ones, used a heated nail to melt a hole
through them and gave that a try.. I can now compress the
plugs and get them in my ear... A fair amount of difference from
the OEM plugs... Still not great, but better.... I noticed that the
drivers are vented... Am going to put a bit of tape over those holes
and see if that helps the noise attenuation..

If you want a really good pair chack out www.etymotic.com. The ER6 and ER6i are great. They are a true in the ear earphone and the sound is as good as anything I have ever heard. They are'nt cheap but if you look around some I think you can get the ER6's for under $70.00 now (I paid $109 for mine). I heard about them over o the sport-touring.net group. Seems alot of the riders there use them and love them. They also do a great job of cutting out wind noise (they work as well if not better than the foam earplugs I have used in the past.
