What: ST1300 Valve Check and Adjust Do and Learn Workshop
When: 8:00 AM CDT, Saturday, November 12, 2005
Where: Courtney Sullivan
4601 Hallmark Drive
Plano (Dallas), TX 75024
GPS: N 33 04.298 W 96 47.197
We're doing Chuck Henderson's and Pete Ruso's 1300s, maybe one more. This will be the second check/adjust for Chuck's bike, and the first for Pete's.
Out of town attendees staying here may arrive Friday night and leave Sunday. There will be a couple of beds and lots of floor space/sleeping bags available, and also offers from some other ST'ers in the area for beds. Cheap hotels are also not far away.
Friday night we'll sit around the garage and visit, kick tires, take plastic off the "work" bikes, and tell stories and lies.
The coffee pot will be on Saturday morning, and we'll fire up the grill and hot tub when we're done.
Come early, stay late, have a good time and share/learn with others.
Let me know if you think you can make it!

Hey Courtney,
Mines overdue for the second one. I have everything I need but a torque wrench I think. If I bring mine would I be able to work on mine while going through the tutorial? I don't want to foul up any plans you have for the workshop so if that won't work then let me know but it would be nice if I could.
Let me know your thoughts. You can PM me if you want.
Thanks,
Curt

Curt - if you come from WI for this we'll fit you in and check and adjust your valves. And I have torque wrenches.

I’ve been requested to move the ST1300 Dallas ValveSTOC so it doesn’t conflict with the rescheduled TexSTOC on October 28th and 29th, so we’re going to push the ValveSTOC out to Veteran’s Day weekend and do it on November 12th.
Hope the rescheduling will still allow those wishing to attend to make it!

That is an otstanding invite.
I left Alaska to 'ride about' this season in the 'lower 48'. Right now I'm in NYC but would like to plan on attending your tech shop session on the 12th. The 2003 ST-1300A has 102.5k miles on it now and will likely have a couple more by the 12th.

I hear ya.. I have 21k on my 04.... I need to get out more...

From centrally located TX, it is not as hard as it might sound. By the end of this week, I'll have two states and four stamps.[/quote]
That looks interesting.... Might have to plan our routes to bring us
close to the NP's...

I wonder how Yellowstone would work?? One park, but
3 states?? (WY,ID,MT)

I have a Z6 rear tire in the garage that has maybe 2k left on it, it's a little cupped as I didn't pay attention to my air pressure on a trip to the Grand Canyon last year.
Anyway, I replaced the tires for a WeSTOC trip and then I got the Wing before I had a chance to run the remaining rubber off this tire.
I was planning on hitting the Hill Country this weekend but I forgot about some work I had scheduled for Sat night/Sun morning so I can't make the trip. So, I'll stop off at ValveSTOC and say hi AND If anyone wants a used Z6 to either run some miles on it before a big trip or just to have a spare sitting in the garage I'll bring it.
Anyone interested?

The Exhausts were a 158 that went to a 155, and a 155 went to a 150. The intake was a 182 that went to a 180.
BTW - All 4 of Curt's intakes on the left side were 182's...tells me the manufacturing consistancy of the heads, valves, springs, etc. is very good.

Damn! I'd spring for the pizzas, and the beer, and the soft drinks, and popcorn, peanuts, and Cracker Jacks to have that kind of expertise showing me how to maintain my ST!
In the past, when something broke and I tried to fix it, I usually wound up putting the parts in a box and taking them to somebody who knew what they were doing. That's one of the reasons I bought an ST and do preventative maintenance.

Thanks to everyone that helped me out. Thanks to Courtney for hosting the whole thing. I learned quite a bit. I'll probably write up everything at some point this week.
The ride home was 16.25 hours of crosswind and headwind. Once I got to Oklahoma it never got above 55 degrees. Had an hour of fog through Oklahoma also. Still made good time and the bike ran great. Seems a little smoother and the top end is back for the attack.
I'll have to get names on the pics so I remember who all was there.

Since Courtney will be moving to St. Louis now at least it's a reasonable ride for me to participate if there's one next year. It was a great learning expierence for everyone involved. I got pretty much all my winter maintenance done in one shot!!! ;) Just need a brake/clutch bleed but that's a lot less work than everything I got done over the weekend.
A big thanks also to Charlie and Cass for putting me up for the weekend. One of these times we'll actually get some time to sit down and visit. ;)

Ok here's the full breakdown with as much as we did. We didn't do the right side so I don't have the shim sizes there yet. I can see after doing this work that if you asked a dealer to record all your shim sizes they probably wouldn't do it. It's a lot of work without having to do that. They would either get it done as fast as possible then bill you for the full time or they would bill you more for the time they spent to do that. All depends on the dealer, YMMV.

Dido to Courtney for hosting the event and all the Dallas Area techs, along with Courtney Leading, who worked and instructed others on various proceedures. It was a valuable learning experience and helped confirm my confidence. Further, it was great meeting people and I wish I had a better memory for names.
Chuck Henderson was there to remind us what cracking forged aluminum might sound like when breaking loose the cam and oil journal covers. Courtney was the final opinion on all valve clearance measurements. Rob not only supplied sandwiches for Saturday, he brought a white tool bag filled with special tools and did a great deal of the 16000 mile maintenace on Pete's bike.
Kent from Alaska with 105,000 miles on his 2003 ST1300 was quick to jump on his bike to go get anything needed. I guess he was needing a few more miles!
I was so impressed with what I saw and observed, I may try to initiate a Tucson or Phoenix valvestoc modeled after the Courtney hosted event.
Thanks to all.

Yes, I can't forget Kent taking the time to run out and get the things I needed to extend my vacuum lines out from under the that mess in between the throttle bodies. I'm glad Courtney thought to do that on the other bikes as I had forgotten that little trick. Now I should be able to check mine without all the hassle next time.
Thanks again for the help.

Curt extending the vac lines is one farkle I will do at the next opportunity. What size/type did you use and what did you use for nipples? Plugs?

Crap! You'll have to ask Ridingfar (Courtney). He has all the stuff at his place. Kent volunteered to go out and get more of what Courtney had so I could do mine. So I didn't really pay attention to what the sizes were but I know Courtney has that info.

3/8" windshield washer fittings and plugs with 3/8 or 5/16 windshield washer hose or vacuum hose. Find them at most auto parts stores.
Reuse the 5 way fitting, and extend hoses to under the air box/forward of the throttle bodies.

Valve STOC 2005 TERRIFIC! A number of fine people Vince, Fred, Jim, Curt, Rocket Cowboy, Pete, … were there. A very special thanks to our host Courtney Sullivan and those willing to share expertise and discuss issues.
.
Steve and Nathan at Plano Honda scheduled replacement for rear tire with AV46 170/60R17 ST rear, and rear brake pads within the hour. Well done with 20% off for STOC event. Pulled out with new rear tire and brake pads in about two hours and returned to Valve STOC. Note rear axle thruster bearings are ready for replacement this set has 65k miles on them.
Made a run to PEP Boys for more 5/32’ vacuum hose and straight connectors to extend vacuum lines for easier meter connect for throttle body balance adjust. Returned to find re-installed cams on Curt’s 2004 ST-1300. (guess I missed the best part or re-assembly). Will just have to do this again … Thanks to all.
11/13/2005 Sunday Plano TX (Motel 6)
Rear tire had 40 #. Put in 42.
I’m off for some more stamp collecting - South to Johnson City. Visit LBJ Ranch. http://www.nps.gov/lyjo/ .
Ranger Bob_House@nps.gov rides a 650 KLR right now. He advised to ride the river road and stop by “Ms. T(St)acey’s” Place in Big Bend NP.
Fog lights went out (fuse? Wire?)
T-storms this evening with an almost full moon, it was a spectacular light show. There were many grazing deer along edge of roads.
Excuse the tardy response. Unreliable net connections when traveling.

Um. No. In northern regions this time of year it does get that cold. On the ride down I didn't have anything above 40 degrees for the first 4-6 hours of my ride.
