I took a new route on my frequent ride from Woodbridge, VA to Hickory, NC to see relatives last week. The interstate choices are 95 to 85 to 40, or 66 to 81 to 77 to 40.

Using US 29 from about Bealton (south of Manassas) through Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Danville, and then Greensboro to pick up I-40 is a nice alternative if you're not in a hurry. Very scenic, not as much traffic outside of towns as you'd think, and few semis. It's also part of Virginia that many don't see--right through the middle.

ots,

next time you ride down this way, give a shout. i'll show you some more excellent roads in southwest va.

one of the best things about US 29, btw, is The Silver Pig, bbq house just north of Lynchburg. The owner is related to me somehow, first cousin of my sister's husband or something like that. anyhow, he got his bbq-training near Greensboro NC so it's the real stuff.

Yes, next time your headed to Hickory give me a shout too. I can show you some good NC roads and some good NC BBQ, and help get you from Hickory back to Danville without dealing with Greensboro traffic.

OK. Greensboro's a mess no matter which way you come at it.
