Howdy ya'll! (yes I am from Texas)

I currently have a 2002 VFR800 and I have been thinking about getting a more dedicated ST bike. Most of my recent non-comuting riding has been 2-up and her knees are not all that great so the VFR is kinda hard on them.

This may be a bad thing to say on this site, but I am kinda looking at the FJR [runs away and hides] and the ST1300.

The biggest hesitation that I have about jumping too a ST is that I really like riding the twisties. I know that the ST handles well but am I going to miss the acceleration and handling of the VFR?

Oh, so is there a time limit for how long I can stay if I DON'T have a ST? :p

No time limit for lurkers that I know of..........yet. If you're serious about the difference between the FJR and the ST in the twisties try and get the back issue of TWO and Bike (both British mags). They both gave the ST the edge in the twisty stuff as a result of a smoother power delivery and better suspension. The only areas the FJR has an edge is straight line top gear roll on and top speed, but not by much. My avitar is from the TWO article. Welcome.

More dedicated ST... hmmmm. That would be the ST1300... you already know about the awesome Honda V4. Stay and lurk ;) You might also want to check out the FJR forum too... have no idea what it is though... he he he.

We need more Texan's on ST1300's! :D

Well, I am a fan of Honda, but I want to keep my options open.

I really wish that I could get a test ride on both the FJR and the ST, that way I could decide from a little experience.

I am going to call the local Yammie dealer to see if they have a FJR in stock for me to sit on. (kinda doubt it as I have heard that they are pretty much order to get)

I know the local Honda dealer doesn't have a ST, might call some of the DFW dealers to see what they have in stock

Hi Tall..
Like I told you on ST.Net..You're gonna like it here..
Use the search feature for any questions as most likely there will be plenty of information.

Welcome to this little corner of the internet..
It is a great place.

A lot of new ST owners are Texans lately..Keep your head down during Rita and be safe!!

Check for used ones to ride as well... :D You'll be back... I know you'll prefer the far superior ST over the FJR... ;) :D

Welcome the the forum - I moved from a VFR800 to an ST - I really loved the engineering refinement on the VFR and the engine, oh, that engine. I moved to the ST for a more powerful and convenient machine, with a great V4 also and a sport attitude. I did look at the FJR, but I am really sold on the Honda quality, reliability and refinement. I love my ST, it's just as much fun as the VFR on the road, and at the same time I get a better vehicle for commuting and long distance travel... I love it. THE FJR will be more on the sport side of the equation than the ST, but the Honda is indestructible, more comfortable and more refined.

Yes you will miss the VFR sometimes .... :(
Yes, *she* will absolutely love the ST ... :D

It's all on where your priorities lie ... but the ST is a better bike than the FJR from a touring and reliability factor ... FJR owners have had some problems.

I'd like to say I could give you an objective answer, but since I'm the proud owner of a ST I can't really be objective - since I love it sooooo much!!!

Haven't the ST's had a few issues too? High speed wobble for example?

I am not trying to pick a fight here, just trying to get a good perspective

Has anyone had any problems with their ST's? I am not talking about "oh well mine developed a leak when I didn't put the plug in correctly" but real, Honda-goofed problems

The only used ST in Texas that I can find sold yesterday. and it was a great deal :(

Yes, the early ST1300's had a couple of problems. Mostly engine heat and a bit of high speed wobble. The wobble was supposed to be fixed with retorqueing but some still mention it from time to time. They had a couple of recalls for fairly minor things but were slow with getting parts to at least some dealers.

The FJR has just as much of a heat problem as the ST although for 06 Yamaha supposedly has worked on it. Some owners of each model have sold them because of heat. It just depends on the individual. The FJR has had a ticking problem that many owners had problems getting Yamaha to pay for. That is why I passed on the FJR. Yamaha has supposedly worked on the problem. Hopefully they have it fixed by now.

Myself, I have not had a problem with heat, wobble or anything else with my ST1300. I had no problem with the stock Dunlops on my 1300 but switched to the Z6/880 combination and it feels even more secure.

I am in Wichita, Kansas. The dealer here has at least one new ST1300 and 2 used 03 FJR's. They have had both the FJRs for some time now and one of the salesmen told me Saturday that the ST isn't selling too well. They might be in a mood to make a good deal for either one. :03biker:

There were reports of high speed wobbles on the 02's that were only sold in Europe. There were a couple of recalls as well, so make sure these have been done on anything you buy.

I have an '03 and have put nearly 6K on her with no problems. I'm so enamored with this bike that I will likely purchase the extended warranty before my 3 year one is up.

I too was tempted by the FJR but several comparitive advantages to the ST1300 swayed me:

1. 3-Year unlimited mileage warrantee
2. Well thought out tip over protection (already benefitted from this twice!)
3. Previous positive experience w/Honda quality & reliablility
4. Narrower, better tucked in panniers (lots of lane splitting in SoCal)
5. Smoother

There were some disadvantages to the FJR that gave me cold feet as well:
1. Current, seemingly unresolved, issue with excessive valve guide wear.
2. Previous, not so positive, experience with Yamaha quality & reliability

To be fair The FJR has some advantages over the ST too:
1. Cheaper price
2. More powerful
3. Lighter

Just got off the phone with the local Yammie dealer and he doesn't have a FJR in stock (not surprised) and the nearest Honda dealer has a '05 ABS model that he is asking $14,299 for. I know these are expensive bikes but that seems a little high for me. Might go sit on it just to see.
Really don't like the '05 Red though, the 03 silver and 04 blue i like much better. and of course nobody has the '06 in black yet :(
Actually honda doesn't even list the 06 under their normal listings on their website.

My VFR can get pretty warm on the legs sitting in traffic and the hot sun, so the heat issue shouldn't be too big of a problem. I regularly ride ~90mph on weekends chasing my friend on his SV (it isn't much of a race ;) ) so a wobble would not be accepted.

The 3yr/unlimited milage warranty sounds really nice, I didn't know anybody put that on for that long.

Thanks for all the responses and input!

SOOo Nathan..
Question still stands..You want me to ask about the 04...
You may be able to work shipping or at least part of it into the deal??

If yes, my suggestion is to check on shipping and try to nogotiate down on that price to cover the cost..(My guess is shipping would be between 5 and 800)..

Just checked with Federal MC Transport. their quick quote said ~$783 for one > 950cc bike. that is excluding any discounts and I understand that HRCA members get a discount, though I don't know how much.

I would be fun to fly up and ride back, but it may be cheaper to just have it shipped with the way ticket prices are these days. (shrug)

The only used ST in Texas that I can find sold yesterday. and it was a great deal :(I've taken my 05' ST up to 150 mph on the open hwy and experienced no high speed wobble. - You will find that if you ride with short sleeve pants, or in temps higher than 100 degrees f, then the engine heat will burn your shins. The fairing wind deflectors accessory was designed to remedy that and, according to some people, really works.

Good to here Big Al.

Kempo, air-fare isn't too bad ~$275-$325 (one-way) but its a 13hr flight  which seems really long and that would be a heck of a drive back.

Over all I think it would be cheaper for me to just get a bike in OK or TX as even if it is a little more it will be cheaper in the long run.

I don't dislike the Red enough to not get one if I can find it cheap enough.

Thanks for the info ya'll

I can't say I've hit 150mph like Al, but I've been over 110mph, and I'm surprised about this "wobble" talk. I've had no hint of wobble on mine. I was following (not too closely) a tractor trailer earlier this summer that was hitting near 100mph, and the bike was solid as a rock.

Good luck on your hunt. When I bought mine, I really wanted ABS, and at the time there were only two in the state of North Carolina. There was one up in Virginia, and one down in S. Carolina. I had a local dealer help out with a search. I did some phone dealing between the two dealers in NC before I made my purchase.

Some have had tickers which the dealers, from what I have read, readily fixed. Even read where one fix the ticker free, even though it was out of warranty. Yamaha, has far as I know, has not addressed the problem, but will fix one when it comes up.

I just bought an ST1300 after riding an Aprilia Futura (similar to the VFR) for several years. I too was nervous about the change and kinda felt I was getting an "old man's" bike (I am 33). However, after riding the ST for a week and a half I am very happy with my decision.

There is plenty of power for me and, although I haven't done any real twisty stuff yet, I think it will handle them just fine. I may need to slow it down a touch but not much. The seat on my Futura was a million times more comfotable but the riding position and wind protection is spot on for me...not too upright and I still get some wind with the shield down.

The most difficult aspect for me so far has been adjusting to the weight of the bike. It isn't an issue once moving but I have had difficulty parking and moving it around in my garage.

I too did not like the red but it has grown on me.

Good luck with your decision!

I've been looking for the "perfect" bike longer than you have lived and I have finally come to the conclusion - there isn't one! The happiest I've ever been is now - I have an -04 ST1300 set up for touring and a '04 VFr .... best of both worlds.

I checked out the FJR before I purchased the ST. FJR definetely leans more to the "sporting" side but not as comfortable as the ST. In the twisties, I didn't notice any difference in the two bikes.

I'm still seeking the perfect single bike, however. Yesterday I checked out a yellow 'n black BMW K1200S. An awesome bike. Expensive. It still won't do what the ST and the VFR do together! The back seat doesn't look that comfortable and the pegs are high (although not as high as the VFR). You might like it, however. If I was in a position to afford it, I would go for the K1200S over the FJR. I think the bike only weighs about 520 pounds!

Just my two cents worth!

SToler: Thanks for looking, those guys are a fair bit closer the Altus. Though Altus can get me a '05 non-abs for $11,999 but it will take 10 days to come in.

I am going to go to the "local" dealer in Ft Worth and have a test sit and see if I can talk them down to a more reasonable price. If I can pay just a little more and not drive to OK then I would be better off anyway, but if they won't budge then I just might run up to OK.

The more I think about it the more I think that I really want to ride a ST, but just a sit may do the trick.

I am currently paying $190/yr for liability on the VFR (I'm too young and its a "sportbike" :( )
I need to call and see if I can get a quote on switching bikes.
BTW I have Progressive.

Thanks again guys!

On a side note, what are you guys paying for Insurance? and who from?

Okay, I hope you can get a better deal down there, if I can help let me know.

EDIT:When I first saw the ST I didn't like it, then I rode it! It was all over after that, had to get one. If you already like it, then when you ride one you won't be able to turn back. :D

I am paying $309/year for full coverage and uninsured motorists coverage, but I think that is cheaper than most are paying. It has something to do with living in OK. Company is Farmers Ins.

Try printing the ads / webpages with the low prices, and bring them with you to the dealer. My local dealer has an "unadvertised policy" of matching the low price on not just motorcycles, but parts & accessories too. It doesn't hurt to ask. (Unadvertised so they aren't compelled to honor every claim, I suppose)

that pretty much what I was planning on doing. Hope fully they will match the $12,000 price and I can take it home :D

thanks for the help SToler, I need to call Progressive and get them to give me a quote, I don't see how it will be MORE for the ST then the VFR, unless they go strictly off of the number of CC's

Also Nathan don't forget it is newer and of higher cash value..
Thats really why you should expect it to be more than your VFR..
If you had both and totalled both, the insurance company would have to write how much of a check to replace each one??

This is why you should expect to pay more for the ST

Should not be too bad though...
I went from a 1990 Yamah Virago last year (My first bike) to the ST this year and my policy (with Progressive) went up about 230 bucks..Less than I expected..Of course I am old at 36 :p:

Now them Canadians though..their insurance..ooof!

You're lucky you don't live in Taxachusetts. :money1:
Not sure what the rules are in other states but, in Mass, if you're financing the bike, you must have collision ins.
This is costing me $2,100 a year. :( That's twice wat I pay for my auto ins.

Any news on when you are going to have it back?

Did you catch the pictures of the Constoc gallery?? You missed a great time!

Actually yes it was dramatic..However the Virago I had was a 750 not a 250..
Still going fomr a 750 V twin to a 1300 V4 was quite a switch..

And Yes I absolutely agree with you..but from an insurance company perspective I'd rather be called old..

If you catch the Constoc gallery (now featured on the home page..My bike is the Beautiful Red one in the front that sticks out more the the duller blue or grey ones :D :p: )which I co-hosted you'd know I am not a day older mentally than 15..I refuse to grow up.

Here's proof!

Thanks Kemp,
Its been 3 weeks so far and I just got through pulling teeth with the ins company. As of this yesterday, I finally had the repair order opened up with the Dealer. The total for the repair is just over $3,000. Its probably going to be another 2-3 weeks. - I sure did miss a good time with you guys at ConSTOC. - I've been checking out all the good pics from the trip.

As for paying $2,100 a year... I guess it's paid off.
Insurance is only good when you need it.

I called and Woods Fun Center in austin has an '05 that they will give me $14,190 out the door. Said he might be able to match something if I told him.

I will try to get the guy in FTW to do that or else I might run down to Austin. its much closer then N OK.

His plate says Georgia, the Peach State.
Nice looking bike, I too wonder why he is selling with so many Farkles and so little miles.

No, I really would like to get a ST I just don't know when it will be. I am going to go up to FtW tomorrow and talk to the dealer and see what they can come down too. Otherwise Austin has one for $14,200 OTD which isn't all that bad really.

Thanks everyone for the help in this wonderful little quest of mine :bow1: :yr1:

Went up and sat on the 05ABS that Honda West has and like it

Kempo, you will be glad to know that I actually liked the Dark Candy Red color. :p

They were going to let me take it home if I gave them $15,900
so I kindly told them that I would pass.

Austin has one for $14,200 OTD ($12,150+TTL) and they (Chad) was real helpful and willing to work with me.

I have found a used one (err, he found me) for $10,500 so I am going to see if I can look at that one.

Anybody want a nice VFR? (I wish I could keep both, but I can't and I suspect the viffer would wind up sitting a lot more)

After a fair bit of thought, and ~100 miles of riding the VFR. I think that I am going to wait on the ST for a while. I will have the VFR paid for in a few months and will continue the search for the ST at that point.

Thanks to everyone for their information and research.

I think I will continue to hang around here and keep my eyes open for a great deal. That is if you guys don't run me off for not having a ST :)

But I put bags on the VFR so its kinda like a baby ST. See

Hello group,

Like Nathan I don't own an ST either but I am growing my bank account in the hopes of getting one.

I haven't ridden or even sat one so I'm not really sure it would fit me. I like the idea of comfort and performance so the idea to look at an ST1300 sorted out as logical.

I have seen that some people think they are top heavy and difficult to horse around. I'm not getting stronger at my age and I like to feel that the bike is naturaly balanced at a stop and not something I have to be too aware of.

Can anyone give me a comparison say to a CB900 as far as the effort required to park and back up ETC.

Thanks
