Driving in the other morning in the upper 50's (Farenheit), I noticed the temp gauge had not made it to the operating range. Is this typical, or do I have a stuck thermostat?

1998 with about 20,000 miles.

Last week driving to work for 1 hr in 40 degree weather it was 3 bars for me. You may have a stuck thermostat.

My 1991 61K, runs at the beginning of the operating arc, summer and winter in top gear above 50 MPH. Above 95 F, it is 2 needle widths past the start of the arc. With a lot of stops it gets to 1/2, sitting about 2/3 and the fan kicks on.

If your needle stays in the red cold zone or has changed its habits you may have a thermostat problem (stuck open.)

Unlike an Accord which stays on 1/3, on the road or in traffic, the ST1100 needle varies a lot.

The ST1100 has an analog gauge and they do vary a bit from bike to bike. One of my '11s seemed to run cooler than the other in the lower temps. I'd just keep an eye on it for now. If you're worried, it's not too hard to check on the 11 as you can get to the rad cap fairly easily. Bike on centre stand, remove the cap, start the bike and stick your finger in the filler neck. If the coolant starts getting warmer gradually as soon as the bike starts, or you can immediately feel a flow of liquid, you've "probably" got a stuck open 'stat. HTH

My old '93 ST11 would run with the needle nicely transecting the "E" in the word "TEMP" under almost all conditions. Once warmed up the temp never went lower than that even in freezing weather. I think the newer 1100s replaced the word TEMP with the ISO symbol so I guess I would say it normally ran at about 1/4 scale? In stop and go traffic it would rise to about 1/2 way with the fan cycling on and off.

Sounds to me like your T-stat is stuck open.
