Guys I'm a goof when it comes to auto/MC wiring. I am in the process of mounting my Garmin 2610 to my Helibars, and I need to know what the easiest/best way is to wire in the harness for juice. I don't plan on having the audio going to my helmet at this point.

I've looked at this quartet nonsense and I have ZERO desire to take every piece of my fairing apart. Can't I just run it to an aux fuse block coming off my battery? I don't plan on ever having my GPS on except when I am cruising, so I can't imagine its needs switched power.

Any help would be appreciated....

The simplest way is to run it directly to the battery, using an in-line fuse on the positive wire. The only problem is that if you leave the GPS on, and turn the key off it could eventually run your battery down.

The way I did it, and I know a lot of other people have done it this way, is to get a relay switched fuse block. Connect the trigger wire to the accessory fuse wire. That way you can run the GPS with the key on or in the accessory position, but when you turn the key off the GPS goes off. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can add more accessories, but there is only one set of additional wires going to the battery. You can put the power block under the seat, or in the tail. You run the positive and negative wires under or alonside the tank up to the handlebar.

Thanks guys.....I already purchased a fused hard wire harness for the 2610, so what I plan on doing is installing a fused block right under the seat and connect to that. Other components I might install later I will consider the quartet.

And as I look at my bike, I am trying to figure out why I would need to remove most of the plastic just to get the harness under the tank and up to my Helibars/RAM. Doesnt look to be a huge task.....maybe I am being naive?

Although I can understand your hesitancy to remove fairings the ST1300 is very easy compared to the ST1100. I suggest you bite the bullet and remove the fairings. Once you've done it you'll realize that it's no big deal, and you'll not be afraid of doing it again. If you are like most of us you'll eventually have to remove them to install some farkle or another. Each time it gets easier.

Just removed the tupperware today for the first time and found it was really not that bad of a job. Added a 12 volt always on cigar plug up front and just plugged into the quartet harness. My friend and I did ours together and neither of us had done this before.

I haven't read the other replies yet but getting voltage from the battery up to your heli's is not an easy thing. Taking the fairing about is not that hard to do but I agree it is time consuming. If you had the 12V accessory plug in the pocket you could just plug into there but I'm guessing you don't have that. If you do then getting the mating connectors for the quartet harness is going to be the cleanest solution.

PM me if need some hand holding. I've done this quite a bit.

What I don't understand is how to connect to one of the available plugs on the quartet harness. There's 4 different kinds (I think). Do you cut them off and just attach to the wires?

Thanks for the thread

You can order the matching plugs from http://www.electricalconnection.com/electrical-components/hitachi.htm
I made use of the black 3 pin on mine as mentioned above and think its the best way to go. Plug into the bikes electrical system, no cutting or splicing wires.
Curt has a fantastic write up on this on the board right here

hooked up to the battery. Then bought the cable from powerlet and run it along the seat and up to the garmin. It stays out of the way... then if I'm not using the gps I just toss the cable in the fairing pocket. Super easy to install the dual plug btw

Thanks for the references and the powerlet info. I ordered a bunch of the Hitachi connector bodies and a pin removal tool so I feel confident about going ahead now.

Thanks again and best wishes to all

Where did you get your power from? There should be a ground point to connect to near it. If you went straight to the battery to get power then just run the ground to the negative side. The closer together your grounds are to a central point near the negative terminal on the battery the less issues you're going to have.

When I first saw this thread, it really scared me. I thought I had become a victim of identity theft, but then I thought about it and there might be another complete moron out there somewhere. Seriously, I suggest you take the right plastic off and install the powerlet in the panel. The plastic isn't that hard to get off and re-install. I like to keep the fasteners separate by the area they came from. This is the power cable I power my 2610 with.

So for the Garmin 2610, I can connect the black ground wire STRAIGHT to the negative terminal on the battery? I have it going to the bolt that the Powerlet instructions show for ground, right beneath the seat. If someone can tell me if that is ok, I'll just leave it. If not, let me know as I can simply move my connector the negative post.

Thanks for everyone's help.
