Hi everyone,

Well, I've been lurking around this great site as a future ST owner for some time and have enough posted a few times. I finally bought on '03 ABS model from a nice gentlman who posted his for sale on the MSN site.

SHORT STORY
Long time riding enthousiast, but relatively inactive the last couple of years. Last bike was FJ1200, which I gave to my son recently. After much research I decided on a ST1300, but put off the purchase until I completed building our new home. For the last few months I've been looking / pricing new '05 STDs, but finally decided to try to find a used one with ABS and a few farkles to boot. (Please, let's not start the ABS debate here...)

Of course, it's conveniently raining like crazy right now and is expcted to continue through tomorrow night, so I can't pick up the bike until Wednesday morning. Wednesday night we travel to the land down-under for 10 days, so my new owner test ride won't happen until the first weekend in November! As Charlie Brown so eloquently stated - AAAAARRRGGG!!!

LONG STORY
While Sport-tourers are not that common here in the States, I've always admired them for their style and versatility. I was actually trying to find a BMW K100 when I bought my '90 FJ1200 back in '94 or '95. It was a bit sportier than other bikes I'd had, but also pretty comfortable for the long haul. (Early bikes included Honda 160, several BSAs, Yamaha XS750 and a couple of Suzuki water buffalos.)

I re-married about three years ago after almost 20 years of "bachelorhood", and my wife loves to ride with me, but we both agreed that we'd like a little more comnfort. Considered the K1200LT briefly, but not ready for that large a bike yet. Tested the BMW R1150RT, which I think is a fabulous bike, but know that I wouldn't be able to settle for the anemic power and annoying vibration. I had considered an ST1100 due to the ergos, but quickly changed my mind once I started reading about the ST1300. I also considered the FJR for a bit, but opted for the Honda for better two-up comfort. (It would have been cool to ride on an FJR with my son on his FJ though...) Once we landed on the ST1300 decision, it was all about color. My wife loved the red so we were looking at a new one for a time, I was looking at a nicely farkled '04 ABS in NM, but finally opted for this '03 due to the fact that it's one hour away and some obvious price savings over the newer ones.

The bike has both Corbin and Rick Mayer saddles, Staintunes, in-dash speakers, heated grips, Gen-mars, tank bra, new Metzlers, 12 volt connectors, mirror and faring wind deflectors, a Rifle windshield with a Laminar lip, and VERY VERY COOL highway wings that tuck in to the tip-over wings. The Rifle is tinted and quite tall for me, so it will likely go. I'll also be ordering a top box before we leave on Wednesday. Other than that and a few other minor farkles, we should be ready for the winter riding season - I realize that must sound strage to those of you who have to winterize your bikes for the cold months. Sorry.

We live in wine country, which is north of San Diego off the 15 freeway on the way to Vegas. This is also Harley country! I think the only type of vehicle that outnumbers Harley's around here is monster trucks! There's a large Harley shop nearby in the touristy "Old Town" area, where you'll see hundereds of beautiful bikes on the weekends. In general, this area is riders' heaven with closeby mountains to the North and East, costline to the West, nad the desert just over the hills. The specific area that we live in is also a popular weekend riding area with mostly 5 to 20 acre avocado and orange groves, streams, and lots of windy roads through canyons.

I want to state how impressed I am with this forum and all the great folks that participate in it. I see wonderful companionship, great sharing of information, support for the hobby, encouragement of responsible riding, and excellent debates. A testament to the participants is that it never gets in to trivial or personal attacks, as do many web sites that offer anonymity. I've enjoyed this site tremendoulsy and look forward to meeting some of you on the road. (Remember - I'll be down-under from Wednesday until the 30th.

My best,
Rick (and Marilyn)

Rick,
I can't believe you'd put a trip to Australia ahead of picking up your new ST! Oh well, to each his own. :D

Welcome to the forum and may you and your wife have many happy miles (would that be miles of smiles?) once you get back home and start riding.

BTW, when you get into those nearby mountain roads, you'll likely find you start regarding those beautiful Harleys as just one more vehicle to pass.:)
Ride safe!

Hey, Welcome aboard. The worst thing you can wait for is the rain to stop. I'm not too sure about the 1300 but my 96 1100ABS was the most fun in the rain. Just watch out for our 4-wheeled friends. They are not looking for bikes in the rain. Now if I can find a 1300ABS to test it in the rain. Prefer a color.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the board! This is a great place... hope you enjoy your time in Australia, and what a great thing to come back to - you farkled up ST wating for you! Thanks for a nice intro too.

So what I'd suggest is to enjoy Australia and rent an ST1300 whilst you're there! You'll be so ready for yours when you get back ;-)

Have fun downunder and welcome aboard. BTW, stay away from the cheap grog!

Hi, Rick. I used to live in Canyon Lake (stationed at March AFB) 15 years ago, but didn't have a bike at the time. I'm sure things have really grown since we left - but we loved Temecula. Now, of course, I would love to have my ST back there and try out some of those great roads. Enjoy!

Hi everyone,...

 Last time I checked the initial costs of aquiring STDs was $0, or at worst a movie and dinner. :D

Sorry, had to do it.

Glad you are getting your STeed. Have fun riding what I assume to be beautiful roads out there!

Congratz on the new bike, Rick, and welcome to the club.

When you get a chance, would you please post a pick of those highway wings you mentioned?

Dan,

I've attached a picture where you may be able to make out the wings. I'll try to get another picture with them folded out after I I pick up the bike and before I leave. According to guy I bought the bike from, they are made by someone nearby in Sun City (forgot name). I think he was tooling up to make them available for sale. Basically the connection point to the frame is behind the tip-over wings and they are placed in a slot that is cut out of the wings. To look at them they just appear like a little chrome edge to the wings, like for some additional protection. However, there's a little nub sticking up that allows you to fold them out of the tip-over wings. I didn't even realize that they were freeway pegs until I looked at the bike carefully, as they are completly tucked in to the wings when not in use! If this guy decides to market them I think he'll sell lots of them. Since the guy I bought the bike from is on the MSN site, you may want to search around there for information on them. He labeled them as "thee Hwy. Wings" in the ad, so there must have been some discussion on them. If they hadn't come on the bike I'd definitely spend some money for them.
Cheers,
Rick

Reminds me of one of my Mum's favourite jokes.

Q: What do you give a guy that has everything ?

A: Antibiotics!

Thanks Rick! Those are way cool looking... I think I'm gonna have to locate some for my bike!

Rick , Did you add the Wings or were they on the bike ? I still have been unable to find out if these are available. Several folks have stated they are not being made, but you evidently have reversed that statement :D

The wings were already on the bike. I'll try to get some more information on them, and if the guy is going to produce any more.

Rick,
Sorry we couldn’t work out logistics, but really happy to see you picked up a good ride anyway. Heck man I picked up my ‘tweener bike (SV1000S) in darn near to a tropical storm! Don’t let a little rain stop you from a good ride home. :D I suppose it’s smartest to hold your water, the older you get the harder it is to do that, especially in the middle of the night. Oops, more information than anyone needed.

Make sure you take the long way home to hold you over until after the Down Under trip. That trip will probably be as good as riding the bike. You’re a lucky man to have both going for you in the next month.

Anyway I wanted to wish you well. :)

Hi Carl,

Congrats on your new ride. I know your ST went to a nice home, so all has worked out OK. Remember that I'm in Southern California. With the exception of last winter it hardly ever rains here, and cagers are down-right dangerous when the roads are wet! It's like watching bumper cars - they don't realize that they have to slow down and give some space. I've also got several hundred feet of mud to climb to get to my house, and didn't want to drop the bike on its maiden voyage! (A real driveway is in the near future.) The rain has stopped and things are drying out now, so I'm picking up the bike in the morning. I'm really looking forward to a nice long ride when I get back!

Thanks to all for the nice comments.

Rick
