Thanks Mellow!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two routes: one with emphasis on riding hard, one with emphasis on enjoying the scenic qualities of the area.

Group A (7 bikes) - round out the flat spots, how many curves can we burn, quick roadside bag lunches, 300+ mile route - this group will be broken into 2 small groups, same route, staggered 5-10 minutes apart to facilitate ease in passing on shorter sight lines, Bones will join me leading these two groups as he is familiar with the area. The lunch menu is attached below... EMAIL ME what you want and I'll put all orders in together in advance for pickup Sat. morning. This group will meet for breakfast at the Littleton Diner at 6:45 AM, with planned departures around 7:30-7:45.

Group B (15 bikes) route sheet attached below - show me the scenery, and let's stop to enjoy some of it too, 200-250 mile route - again, with as many bikes as it looks like we will have, this group will be broken into a few smaller groups, same route, staggered 5-10 minutes apart to facilitate ease in keeping folks together. Dave (roadancer), and Jim (Low Flyer) will be leading these groups. All B group participants meet up in the morning at the Maple Leaf Motel for an 8:15AM departure. The first B group will leave then, the second will leave 10 or 15 minutes after.

Ed, not really, unless maybe you're from waaaay down south man, begining of June (tentative plan is June 2-4, not May) here is quite warm... most of the guys coming over after NESTOC last year were wishing they had brought mesh... it's a great time of year 'cause it usually hasn't had a chance to get real humid yet. Not clear on Spring Break?

My guess is NESTOC is June 2-4 as I think Americade will be 6-10 June. So we are either going to do one or the other. NeSTOC was ok but seemed a bit stuffy. The riding was great! Our dinners we had at NHfcSTOC were way better than NESTOC's. So it won't hurt my feelings to do this one instead of NESTOC. How do the rest of you feel about the dates? :03biker: Now can we get this thread past 600 posts? :D

Down my fiery brother I was trying to say this is the same weekend as NESTOC and we had talked about doing that. This will be a great sub. I was not bashing the other meet but we were not welcomed by the regulars at NESTOC so this would be my choice. I was looking for some clarification on the dates. Are you going to make me post those pictures that have thus far stayed off the site.

NESTOC is probably the same weekend... Americade starts 06.05 from what I saw. I'm not out to compete or compare, it's just not what I'm up for. I like the smaller more personal groups, and I don't give a rats tail what you ride as long as you ride well, and jive in a group. That said, sorry if this plan interferes with anyone going to NESTOC.

We had a great time meeting and riding with you guys at ConStoc and we want to do more of that next year.

So...

Dave and I are going to get together after the Holidays and get this rolling some. Between the two of us, May-July isn't a good time for us, thinking about the same weekend, or the one after (2-3 weeks after CT-STOC). So, let us know what ya think... we're still leaning toward a 4 day gig and the idea of smaller multiple groups or freeriding than one big group ride.

Happy Holidays everyone... hope this finds everyone well :)

If you make it the one after, it would be easier on us coming from way up north as we could turn it into a Week long extravaganza and avoid a second trip down. No better way to spend a week than riding some those great roads you guys have down there.

I've been to two NESTOCs before. Missed last year. I'd also like to visit the other group being planned here. May I politely point out that the ST world is small enough, without competing events on the same weekend.

I agree that most ST riders are not Americaders (I've done that too, but can live without). I'd like to recommend you set your event for a week or two after NESTOC. What would it hurt? There is no "clique" at NESTOC that I found, just people who share an interest. I'd like to see that circle get wider, not divided.

GRN
12-22-2005, 08:47 PM
Hey guys... on the dates detail, relax. I believe most of us have pleanty of complicated forcasting to do...

I can't lock up vacation 'til sometime in April (company process), and I have a lot of "must do" time I need to take for plans that I already have that involve significant $$$ or personal family commitments, so to get those I may have to be flexible about other time taken. In our org, folks get priority based on how long they have been there, not by title, and having only been there 5+ years there are a bunch of (more than half the company) that gets priority in case of conflicts. Dave can't do May, his business is nuts then. I have a lot of time going to other interests in June. July I have to take another week for family. May-July are out of the picture for us this year.

Last year's timing worked out pretty well, and we didn't even start this process until the last half of June... best estimate for dates I can throw out is 2-3 weeks after the CT ride, I'm not sure going the very next weekend would work out for most folks, but I could be wrong. There probably won't be much/any color that weekend though.

Would like to be able to make it. But I have to say that any prolonged highway riding into or out of Ottawa in October almost invariably translates into "COLD!" So, even though I have heated grips and vest, I'd prefer the earlier of the two optional dates.

Greg,

Either date is fine for us.

Brenda has been talking about riding up on her bike and then riding pillion on mine. For her, the earlier date would probably work better, since she's got no wind protection.

Yeah right... and who's gonna give you a better draft that me ;)

Reality is, I knew the route last year like the back of my hand, mostly by virtue of having driven most of those roads many times under many circumstances, and having had time to do it in it's entirety several times prior to the event. This year my approach to leading a route would get dialed back according to my familiarity with it, which will most likely be mixed. I am looking forward to having an excuse to spend several days in VT this summer road hunting... as I'm sure a few of you are looking forward to assisting me in this laborious task :p:

So the confirmed 2006 Northeast itenerary looks something like this...

June 2-4 is NESTOC in NY
August 5-13 is FundyStoc in NB Canada
Sept is CT-stoc (2) in Connecticut
End of Sept/Oct looks to be NNESTOC

There are murmuring of something in May but I donlt think that is solid yet...

As long as your suggestions take the form of a guided tour or two... or three or four! Absolutely man, would really appreciate some guidance over there on the "other side", I'm only really familiar with a few roads that work well into loops from here (and get me to the Fairly Diner ;) ). Let's talk more and look forward to getting all this crap cleared off the road so we can check it out. I'll PM you my #. Last year the priorities for the route were: curves, curves, and curves with a dash of picturesque view mixed in - which kinda takes care of itself within the first three anyway... gotta love it up here, eh? I think Dave knows his way around over there a bit too, so between you I believe I'll have a pretty short curve!

Thanks for your help Jim, hope you'll be joining us?

So after a quick look at the potential miles of good stuff in VT, we're looking a little further north at a lodging option on the fringe of Littleton, NH. Dave has a contact who's a motel owner there, and has hosted riding events like ours before... and he rides! Dave asked me to guess how many rooms we might need, and I did, but I don't believe it. Help me out ya'll... I'll share my assumtions and give me some feedback:

Those I'm pretty sure will be there:
Me and my Bride (one room) - confirmed
Low flyer and his Bride (one room) - confirmed
ST1300NH and Bride to be (one room)
Bones (split) - confirmed
AgSTreak (split)
Carl_T (split) - confirmed
Kempo and Kiddo (one room) - confirmed
roadancer (local) - confirmed
1downfourup (local)
STeveST1300 and Bride (one room) - confirmed
STeve3b3 and Bride (one room) - confirmed
Newbornst1300 and Bride (one room) - confirmed

Folks who I know are interested but I'm not sure about:
Alex
CamperNH
eddiemack
STeelersfan
Northeast Rider
RoadSurfer
georgeorge
rlw1955
fundyrider
1999purple
CarSalesman
RocketCowboy?

So based on that, I'm guessing we will probably need at least 10-12 rooms... and then there are likely to be some folks not included above (SPEAK UP :) ),
so we probably want to block out 15 rooms. Forgive me if I have left anyone out that I shouldn't have... been a long week. Sure would like to meet some new folks... I know there are some more ST'rs in NH, MA, ME and VT that we haven't heard from yet.

It would be real helpful to hear from ya'll about where your at so we can takle this early and get enough rooms held for a few months while everyones realities pan out a bit. Thanx!

Hey Dave. Welcome aboard.

STOC = ST Owners Club (not the same thing as ST-Owners.com, but with lots of member overlap).

*STOC are names for ride meetings. For example, NESTOC is the Northeast STOC rally, WESTOC is the west, NNESTOC (this thread) is Northern New England STOC. Check the home page for the events listing and plan to join us for as many as you can. We're all pretty harmless...well, except for Eddie but we love him anyway.

Dave,
The NESTOC organizers have booked room at the Best Western in Cobleskill NY, Information can be found here. http://www.dacor.net/norton/moto/nestoc/

A bunch of us from this site are getting together to ride as a group. We tend to keep within 5-10 of the Speed limit as much as is practical on the NESTOC ride. We take twisty back roads to briskly enjoy the roads themselves, and also see what scenery we find. We enjoy the camaraderie on stops and we spread out on curving roads, so everyone can ride their own pace and keep safe distance between bikes. We make sure the guy behind us makes the turns onto new and different roads so no one gets separated even with a wide gap following distance. While we don't go track speeds fast, we sure don't go cruiser sleep mode slow either. We've been able to accommodate a variety in riding speeds quite well, though I'd think a beginning rider would not fit in well with the group unless we were making a particular point of accommodating a very easy going pace. A couple on a Gold Wing will be joining us this year, so you can see we aren't doing super squid stuff though.

I'll post the link to the NESTOC website in the first post on the NESTOC thread to keep further NESTOC discussion out of this thread.

I expect it to be quite a bit less than the Woodstock in was last year. We have talked to the motel owner, just waiting to hear back... will post all details in the first post of this thread as they become available. Hope you can make it this year man, hopefull duty won't call :)

Al, I'm sure they'll all enjoy Brians campground and the classy company... last's years crew was a fantastic bunch... couldn't ask for better :) I regret that I'll likely not make that one this year, the three I'm doing plus the week in Cali flyfishing, plus all the remodeling projects I have on the table are gonna eat up my 15 days of paid freedom in a hurry...

So, I have a week of vacation coming March 20-24. I need to be in Jennings FL the 24th for a WERA weekend. (Fri practice, Sat 6 hour team endurance, Sun 8 lap Vintage). I am looking at the Map, Philly to Orlando 1003 miles ...
I started thinking, IBA certification run??? Could I dare? Stock seat, no farkels - none, bone stock, brand new, minimum seat time in type. If the weather cooperates I thinking I'll go for it. On the one hand it's still pretty cold, on the other, 3 months for the first ride??? ............

Brian,

If you're going to try that, plan a bit longer than the SS1K mileage.
Also, I did mine on the stock seat, and while it was painful, it was do-able. YOU, however, can have an alaska leather buttpad sent to you to make the trip comfortable. Try http://www.alaskaleather.com. tell them BEFORE YOU GIVE THEM YOUR CC that you're a member of this group, and they'll give you a discount. If you do a search on this site for alaska leather, you'll find a thread about them.

Brian, first, glad to hear you'll be joining us man, I promise the ride up here will be a real treat... why don't you make it an even 3 (? :o: ) and come up for the Adirondack ride too?

In '94 I did a run from Lancaster, PA to Gulf Shores, AL - 1117 miles in 16:15ish, and that was stopping a total of 5 times, twice for close to an hour to "normalize" with a paper and something resembling a real meal. Did it on a bare bones, 100% stock '91 ST11. Get yourself that sheepskin and you'll be golden, no bells or whistles required man. GO FOR IT

So if I count all who have commited, plus two I know who will, we're at 13 bikes already. We have already started looking at two groups... maybe along the lines of one group who wants to take a bit more relaxed approach to enjoying the country side, and the other in persuit of chicken strip shrinkage. Sound about right to Ya'll?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good morning. Here are the group rates for Friday and Saturday nights,
September 29 and 30. All rates are quoted for two people. State tax of 8% is
additional. All units have a small refrigerator or kitchen option. All have
AC, phone, and color cable TV.

Standard units with one queen bed $62.10/night
Large unit with one queen bed $71.10/night
Large units with two double beds $71.10/night
Large units, two double beds & kitchen $81.90/night
Unit with two small bedrooms (a double
in one, two twins in the other) $75.60/night

Additional person in a unit is $9/night. Cot is $5/night.

More info:
Bar BQ is $49/5 people or about $10/person. Beverage is at your expense. We
can pick up and you can use our covered picnic area.
Plenty of parking right outside of the units including (likely) some
covered.
Pool is heated (solar system) and will be open weather permitting.
There is a taxi service but there are some dining options within walking
distance including the Littleton Diner for breakfast.
There is a Honda motorcycle dealer about 1 1/2 miles away.

We would take reservations individually, first come, first served. A credit
card is necessary to hold. At this time we would stick to a two-night
minimum to hold the discounted rate for your group. The toll-free number is
888-513-LEAF.

Call us should you have further questions or need more information.

I need some feedback from ya'll on route planning...

It appears that we're going to have enough bikes to really warrent breaking the group into two... and if we do that it makes sense to me to segregate folks interests so that we would have two organized rides/leaders where one leads those who are interested in a relaxed pace and taking in the beauty of the area; and another leading a group who's interests are more on eating up as many miles of the fantastic roads we have here as possible... anyone who attended last years event knows which group I'm likely to lead

or...

We develop a map highlighting the great roads with 2 color schemes indicating the same differences as mentioned above, and folks work out some groups Friday night and kinda go do your own thing...

I don't want to make this complicated... believe me... just want to maximize everyone's fun factor. I know that everyone had a good time last year, but the pace and infrequency of stops wasn't "ideal" for everyone. If we can do this in a way that it doesn't create a huge chore for those trying to get it set up, and better caters to everyone who wants to participate, we're all better off :)

I will not be able to scout and preride the route(s) as well as I did last year... I moved a ways South, and we're starting further North... adds about 3hrs round trip to my missions up that way. Not complaining mind you, just my reality. Luckily, I'll have some great help from folks who know the area east of the river much better than I to eat up a lot of the curve.

1. I'd like to include some of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, especially up along the Canadian border.

2. I spoke with Nancy at the motel and discovered we went to the same high school. Her cousin is a police dispatcher in my town. Anyway, that very night we saw a lost golden retriever near the high school. Obviously someone's family pet. Cold or coyotes would have done in the dog for sure, so we brought her home for some food and warmth and to find the owner. We called the police to find the owner via the rabies tag number. The dispatcher identifies herself and, after helping me with the dog business, I mentioned that I spoke with her cousin at the hotel in New Hampshire today. We had a nice talk. Funny how things happen sometimes.

Bones... I'm more concerned with format than content at this stage. Do folks want 2-3 predetermined routes/leaders that all do a liitle different thing, or do they want a map noted with what roads are what, and kinda just meld into small groups on their own Friday Night/Sat Morn? I'm good with either approach, just wanna hear what ya'll want to do.

Ken

FWIW - Since I've never been to the area, I would enjoy a ride that includes as much or more scenery than miles. I love to burn up miles as much as anyone, but I'd really enjoy being able to admire the area too, especially at that time of year.

Perhaps 2 rides / 2 groups - one for miles and one for scenery as you mentioned above? I'm unfamiliar with the roads and the area so I can't gauge how different such routes might be, but perhaps one route that covers 250-300 miles (scenic) and another that runs 350-400 miles (road runner)? Just a thought...I'm sure the options are endless from what I see of the maps! :burnout

Two rides / two groups sounds good and would satisfy everyone.
Ken, perhaps we could meet up along the way and head into Littleton together.
We would be heading south down I81 through Watertown and then East to VT/NH. Haven't worked out the details yet so if you have any recommended routes, please let us know and we can work out a spot to hook up along the way. Never been across the Ferry you mentioned either.

Really haven't put much though into route details yet, but this is what I came up with in my first pass in S&T yesterday. The ferry runs every 30 minutes and costs a whopping $9 for bike and rider round trip.

Route 3 east out of Watertown is a pretty good run but last fall there was a lot of construction through the town. I would think that it would be completed by the time we take that route. I'll definately be down in that area for a ride in early May and I will probably go that way over to Placid as well.
We could meet at the Route 3 exit off I-81 as there is gas /food if I remember correctly and it would be a good place to make a pit stop.

Alright, two routes it is... one with emphasis on riding hard, one with emphasis on enjoying the scenic qualities of the area, and with some luck, crossing paths and enjoying a nice lunch together somewhere. This seems to be the best we can do to max satisfaction.

Now for ya'll planning to attend, please state your preference as to which group you would ride with so I can make sure there's enough of a ballance to make it make sense... if we end up with 10 in one, and 2 in another, I'll suggest we rethink it.

So let's see what we get, vote:

Group A - round out the flat spots, how many curves can we burn, 275-300+/- mile route

Group B - show me the scenery, and let's stop to enjoy some of it too, 225-250+/- mile route

If the miles seem a little low, remember we have shorter days that time of year, and I want to keep everyone as safe as possible by avoiding dusk :deer1: if we have any variability on the rides.

I betting we have 3 (me, bones, dwight) in A and 2 (Ken, Steve) in B at this point.

Greg,

I enjoyed last year's pace, Just would have liked to stop a bit more. I'll probably in group B, with Brenda on back.

Steve:04biker:

Hey Steve,

I don't know that we will exceed last years pace, or that I would take any more risks than I did last year... that was a pretty spirited ride, and as I recall, you didn't have any trouble keeping up... no surprise 'cause you ride the faster :04biker: I think last year was an exceptional ride in that several folks in the group knew those roads very well, and I had ridden the route several times just prior to the event. We were also blessed with perfect weather, and very light traffic - even for the boonies.

So to answer your ?... compared to last years ride, I think we will be lucky to match that pace with either group. I certainly won't have the luxury of spending as much time on the route, and will be seeing some of the roads for the first time this year while scouting. I have no idea yet who will be leading the second group... Dave maybe interested, and Jim (if he ever gets out of the dog house) may be too. The area of VT we are looking at is Jim's back yard, has been for 30 yrs. so if he leads a group I would expect it to move right along... and he's also on the faster :04biker:

The significant difference between the routes will probably be that one is focused on finding as many kick *** twisties as possible... the other will focus more on enjoyment of the larger environment and scenery. Those who ride up this way regularly will probably be more interested in the first, while many not familiar will be more interested in the later. Both will have great riding and great scenery, just different balances and cadence.

I have run out of ways to make this response any longer... I quit :)

Guys, I was going to share a room with Bones before Dawn wanted in on the ride. I just reserved a room for Dawn and I. and now Bones is on his own.

He'll post if he wants another roommate to share costs or not, but if he does, perhaps somebody is also flying solo and then both of you could consolidate into one room. That, or maybe someone new will join in and need a room.

I just booked one night there (Sept 30th) as the Maple Leaf wouldn't book me. Rooms are cheaper too btw. The wife wants to ride her own so we'll be riding up the back way... heading to a package store for cold beer ... then looking for the party! Here I was all protected and all in my mesh Motoport, and you would have thought I just landed from Mars. I took the wife along and she had a blast just taking in the looks we got. But you can imagine some of the sights we took in! We have a place in Waterville Valley and just about every biker in Quebec uses the Valley as home base. We're actually pretty close, only 60 miles. After the meet at your place I took 207 to 138 to 165 and up 3 and got home in 90 minutes. If Sundays are good for you then I'm up for it. I'll keep you posted.

I believe the final death toll was 10 this year (as of Sunday)... and the # of injuries to riders, caused by other "riders" was 3-5X that. I'll pass on that.

I'll pass on that.I've never been a fan of Laconia's Bike Week. However, I just got back from Americade a few weeks ago. We nicknamed it (AquaCade) due to all the rain. Didn't get much riding in. :( --- I've got some pics here: http://www.st-owners.com/gallery/browseimages.php?c=33&userid=2956

Americade doesn't have beer tents and strip clubs. During the daytime it's lots of fun. Espcially if you register and participate in all the family style fun but, as the day gets darker, so does the atmosphere. The rowdier the crowd gets and it becomes a lot like Laconia. - Not my style. I'm usually back at the hotel by then. Even though I had a good time with friends, I'll bet I would've had more fun riding with you guys at DACK-STOC.

DackSTOC was the original AquaSTOC... 700+ of the 1000 miles I did that weekend were in the rain :D Sorry you missed that one man, it was quite a clinic in wet weather riding.

A swiped photo from another forum, it is of Laconia this year. The photo pretty much says it all. Compare this to the gear we all were wearing at NESTOC last year when it was 98 degrees out.

Nekid flesh, moving bikes 'n booze... a combination I'll pass hanging out with/around thank you.

Looks quite different than Laconia. Although, there were some pics from the nightlife there that I wouldn't dare post here.

Sure no problem they are a very easy install. All you have to know is the color of the wires for brake/running lights and turn signals I used T-taps it was easy. I have the color codes for the wires somewhere, if I can't find them I know they are on Marc Lawrence's site.
Todd Bones has already offered and I accepted his invite for Thursday but I am sure we can all meet up Friday for the ride up. Thanks for the offer. :03biker:

07.22-23
07.29-30
08.05-06
08.12-13
08.26-27

I'll probably do at least two, maybe three camping weekends getting familiar with the area so Dave and I can get final routes together. I maybe pretty well locked down in Sept before the ride - MSF instructors course is two long weekends early/mid month if that opportunity works out this year.

It would be great to get a couple of small groups, 3-4 bikes, for the good company, and for getting some photo content for some potential Rider articles Bones and I want to work on. Who want's to be famous?

I've been a busy boy tuning up so I can run with the big boys. I haven't ridden in the rain for years so during the very wet weekend we just had, I got out with the bike, and you know what, the bike and I had no problems. I learned that glove inside of sleeve works better than the converse, but otherwise I stayed very dry. I slowed down a little in the corners, but the bike felt really planted except maybe for the tar snakes, which felt a little slippery.
Now this doesn't mean that I expect rain when we rally, but, well, most of the recent pictures do seem to be on the wet side. I've also been busy outfitting my wife, Mary, with a Tourmaster flex jacket, boots and gloves. She vetoed any thoughts of measuring up for a Motoport outfit:( . So I guess I'll just have to be the best dressed on the bike, although maybe not the most stylish. Also, Sargent seat and hyperlites are on the way:p: . This is just what I needed, a new excuse for more farkles! I'm really excited about this!:hotpepper
