Is anyone else having trouble locating tires for the ST1300?
I went to the STealer today to see what it'd cost me to get a nice shiny set of new tires. My first choice was Michelin Pilot Roads based on reviews I've seen from Curt and a few others - they can't get those - not a big surprise. Second choice was Metzler Z6s. Not available. Third choice Dunlop D220 OEMs - the tire that came on the bike - not available - maybe in 30-60 days. Ok - I'm stretching for a fourth choice - Avon 45/46 - sure... oops - not available.
Seems like I can get lots of different sizes, just not the sizes that the ST is supposed to have. Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have a source to recommend?
Thanks!

Shop online - do a little research -that's where your best deal in tires are. You have a lot of dealers online that can have tires at your doorstep in 2-3 days.
Just to name a few - ridegear.com, tiresunlimited.com, motorcycle-karttires.com, cyclegear.com, motorcycle-superstore.com ....
I have checked out a lot of these dealers for tires, most are OK. Some of the people in this forum might be able to lend more specific guidance.
If you don't have the equipment to mount and balance them, find a dealer that will do a good job reasonable.
Ride Safe !!

I was looking for a thread not long ago about tires and even if the size was the same as OEM doesn't mean you are getting OEM. The tires were different. Any body know where that thread went?
Found it

Ok, so I've seen alot of posting on here about "alleged" difference between OEM and NON OEM Dunlop 220's, but no actual explanation what the difference is. Well, I know what the difference is. As some of you may know, I had to buy a new tire just 900 miles into my brand new 05. Anyway, I ordered another 220 from a tire place I've ordered from before, and didn't figure there'd be a difference. Smart thing I kept the old tire. I just went out and looked them over. The difference is the OEM tire is a 4 ply tire in the tread section, 3 plys Rayon + 1 Ply ARAMID (whatever that is?), and 3 plys Rayon on the sidewall section. Now, the bad news. The NON OEM tire is 3 plys on the tread section 2 plys Nylon + 1 ply steel, and 2 plys on the sidewall, both Nylon. So, in a nutshell, I screwed up! And I bet this may also apply to Bridgestones as well. I noticed from my vendor they specified OEM tire for ST as Bridgestone, but not for the Dunlops. Also, I'll bet a million bucks this is why my bike started weaving (never did it before I changed the tire) at high speeds. I've only put about 300 miles on this tire. I'll be ordering a new OEM tire immediately. Costly lesson learned. I'm gonna upload some pics in a bit.

Since we're talking tires, I have a question for anyone who's had Z6's. How the heck do you know when they're worn out. Since there's no wear-bars, what should I be looking for ? I have about 6K on them so I should be good for a while.
Thanks.

Right off I don't know where the thread is. However, what you are remembering is that the OEM Bridgestone tires BT020F. If they are not the "F" models they are not OEM replacements. Something to do with the load rating if memory serves.

I just checked yesterday at a local aftermarket ATV/BIKE shop and they said two day delivery on the Avons. I did not ask who they ordered from but they did call them while I was there for availability.

Dave@motorace.com can probably get you the Pilot Roads. Please at least email him and at least let him know you're looking for the Pilot Roads. SWMototires might also have them too.

Meant to ask you, Curt - did you get the 120/70R18 or did you go with the 110/70R18? The 120 is what's causing the trouble getting that set... my STealer says it's an odd size... sounds like their personal problem to me...

I'll add one more place. Ron Ayers (ronayers.com) sells all the tire models you mentioned. I received my Metzler ME880 very quickly.

Cruisin Dog & ataDude, that's exactly why I won't put another MEZ6 on my bike. You can't tell how much tread you have left on the rear tire. I had them on and a riding buddy on a BMW 1100RT had them on. We were on our yearly long ride out west (4400 miler). At one of our overnights I tried to measure how much tread we had on the rear tire. I have a tread guage and the only place you can measure is on the side of the tire as the center has just a wide flat area. The guage showed we both had 2mm of tread. When we got home we both were showing cord on the rear. Pretty scary as we were cruising at 85 on the slab. I think that it's a p--s-p--r design!

That's exactly why I don't like the Z6... particularly the rear. You can wear it down to the belts without even knowing it's close.
I love the Avons even though they're supposely down-rated for the heavy ST.
See below for info on the wear bars on Z6s:

(look through all the photos)
BTW, I like the Avons a lot, too.

+1 for Ron Ayers site. Though I haven't yet had to get tires for my ST, I ordered a set for my VN750 and had them very quickly. Good site for other stuff too.

Dave...
Looks like I'll be seeing you soon for a set..Do you mount them as well?
I am in Meriden CT and work in Hartford so a quick trip up to Springfield is very easy for me. I'm hitting 12K tomorrow on the EOMs include a rear with a plug in it. SO its time!
BTW My ST brothers that have worn your tires have really sold me on the Pilots Roads..Curt, Bones and Brian (Georgeorge)
Thanks

And - soon I will not be selling them direct. Too many complications.
www.compacc.com will be selling them exclusively. Very good people.
