Northwest California. North of Red Bluff and west of I5.
Think pink.

If you are ever in NorCal, then IMO, do not miss this.
...But first let us see if anyone recognizes the road.

Would that be Rt 36? Or perhaps Rt 299?

Or is it Salmon River Road? The Trinity Alps in No California has some absolutely wonderful roads!

Nope. Those are a couple of the obvious roads people would ride while in the area.

Think pink.

This road is one lane for 30 miles or so. An "honest" one lane in a lots of places. Meaning car and bike cannot pass. Honest one lane on the edge of a rock cliff as photographed. Awesone road to slowly putt along in 2nd gear and rubber neck the views. The east half of the road is two lane haul ***, freshly paved, smooth as glass road. I was stopped in a couple of places due to the finishing of the paving. Something they called a fog coat.

You posted your second guess before I posted my reaponse and you are correct. From the 96 to a ways past Forks of Salmon it is one lane and after that on the south end of the fork you eventually end up on the fast pavement. While getting a new rear tire in Redding I was talking to the service manager and he was saying that many people overlook that road. I asked him about the upper/north fork road and he said he had never been on that section. I guess made the "best" choise when I hit the fork in the road.

Yup, that whole area is full of great riding roads; there's little traffic, few cops, and the roads vary from tight one-lane twisties to broad hi-speed sweepers. I was up there about a month ago...spent 3 days with a bunch of riding buddies "doing" Rts 36, 299, 96, 3, and a bunch of other lesser knowns including Salmon River Rd.

Norman,

I knew that was the road west of Cecilville instantly from the first photo. Was there with a friend who bought a place on the river just east of Cecilville last year. Was going to do it again this September but the signs saying "expect two hour delays" put me off and I just stayed on 3.

Spent 30 years in Woodland Hills before retiring to Lake Almanor in '90. I know T. O. well, still have one son in Oak Park and the other in Simi.

Do you by any chance have a Streets and Trips mps file of the road ? I'd really like to save this one on my to-do list.

Thanks.

That is why why I decided to do the name this road thing. If you have been there it is unmistakable. Wanted to see how recognized it would be.

Sorry no. The road is between the 96 and the 3 and at Forks of Salmon (town) you take the Southern fork in the road. I was heading east so this meant I took the right fork. On the 96 side, near Somes Bar, the road is named Salmon River Road. I am reasonably sure of that. On the 3 side it is near Callahan.
