I received an email from Derby Cycles www.derbycycles.com/ yesterday announcing Autocom kits are 50% off regular price. The accessories are not on sale. I checked their site and there is no mention of it, but if I remember correctly, the sale starts on October 31. I'll check the message when I get home and post the details.

I wonder why Derbi would put this out but not Auto Comm? Do you think the sale is through Derbi dealers or is Auto Comm running it? I have a Debi dealer in the area, maybe I'll see what they know about it.

Thanks,
David

WOW...I just might have to take them up on this....I hope it's true. That would put the Active 7 Base at about $150!

Yeah, no kidding... I'm debating Starcom vs. Autocom at the moment, and half off tips the scale heavily in Autocom's direction.

Hi guys,

the sale is listed in the press over here in the UK as well. It gives the reason as making way for 2006 new products. Wonder what they might be? wireless helmet sets possibly?

Thanks for the heads-up on this great buy. Just ordered the Smart-7 Kit3. Didn't have the spare cash to complete our list's buy before, so this was really timely.

Plus 16.50 for shipping. I used Autocoms site to configure the additional pieces I'll need, and printed that out to order at a later time. I didn't want to miss out on the base package "limited time" sale happening right now. If it cost's me $16 extra for a split shipment...oh well

Over here in U.K. Autocom had a whole page about their half price sale in the Motorcycle News. "to make way for the 2006 range" Could this be the age of bluetooth I wonder? I think I will hold off buying, until I see what they bring out for 2006. I use at present the Pro M1 which is about 5 years old with a few attachments with it, but it uses 5 pin din plugs. I find it is quite adequite for my purpose although I could do with a bit more volume to compensate for the use of earplugs and my old age( half deaf-thanks to rock bands of the 70's).If you don't have a system at all then grab a bargain. The good thing about Autocom that they are not a "here today gone tomorrow" company.so I am sure you will be able to purchase spares and extras for years to come until you are ready to buy a newer model.

if I get the smart7 #3 kit, what else do I need to for bike to bike communication and to hook up my gps/radio to the helmet?

You need there bike-to-bike kit which includes the push to talk switch and the cabling to go to your radio. Not that you care but the IMC MIT-100 kit comes with 4-headsets and the push-to-talk , bike-to-bike, set up all for $200. And it has a few adaptors for different radios. I use some Audiovox ones that were $20 for 2.

The full bike to bike kit from Autocom costs $200 but that includes another headset. The kit without a headset costs $120 (http://www.autocomamerica.com/docs/products_details.cfm?productID=86 ) Their radio cable though has a connector for the Kenwood radio which I believe is the only one they support so you'll need to purchase one (or two) of the Kenwood radios. The Kenwoods on their site range from $85 - $240. http://www.autocomamerica.com/docs/productsResults.cfm?CategoryID=46

Looks like they added the $85 one recently since the other two they had were pretty expensive.

Hi,Just a short Q about the pro 7. does it come with the power cord to hook up to the bike power. Thanks:03biker:
Not out of the box; the Pro-7 is 9v battery powered. There is an adapter box (Autocom part 152 [PSU-M2]) that converts the native 12v bike power to the Autocom's 9v system though. According to Autocom, if you use the converter:

"Connecting the power leads
Normally you will connect our black (negative) wire directly to the battery negative terminal using a crimped eyelet and solder the joint, then connect our red (positive) wire to a recommended, switched ignition, fused supply, such as the positive feed to the tail lights, or rear brake light switch, but always ask your dealer if you are not completely sure.

Please note that you can split the red and black power cable as required and cut it to length before making the connection. IT IS IMPORTANT not to connect to your bikes brake light circuit if your bike has ABS braking and/or a brake light failure warning system (consult your bike manufacturer/supplier for approval before connecting to any ABS brake light circuit). If connection to the brake light circuit is not recommended, please use some other recommended fused/ignition switched 12 volt supply, such as the rear light live feed or any other recommended point. ALWAYS solder joints wherever possible, as this provides a more professional and reliable connection. Avoid crimped or mechanical joints unless they are soldered. DO NOT USE quick connectors such as Scotch-Locks etc. There are nearly always unreliable and, most bike manufacturers condemn their use, which may affect the warranty. NOTE: You may require some other fitting parts that are not included with the kit, i.e. Tie wraps, solder, tape, etc. Most of these consumable parts are available in our Bike Fitting Kit, Part Number 150 (BFK-U). For further assistance please contact your nearest Autocom dealer."

I received my Autocom Active-7 from Derby Cycles today, man that was some fast shipping. I removed all the contents of the box to check out the goods, nice quality stuff. Nothing feels cheap or crappy. I will hopefully install the system this weekend.

Got mine and my wife's today too. What struck me the most was the very sturdy connectors. They even seem to be waterproof the way the interlock. Kind of hard to get apart though, but it helped using a little spray silicone.

I'm gonna wait a week or two till I "winterize" before I start my install...Be sure to post any helpful advice. I picture the unit will fit under the seat, and I can see helmet leads sticking out from under the seats as previously mentioned, but I wonder how I'll run leads up to the handelbars for radio, FRS, and cell phone. I also need to order all the extension stuff and second helmet kit. I got a long winter ahead.

I am exploring the option of placing the unit in the left pocket of the fairing. I found this photo someplace and it seems like how I want to do mine. I plan to plug in my MP3 player, cell phone and eventually radar detector and keeping all those items in the pocket seem convenient and secure. Jury is still out.

The left pocket would be the ideal place if it weren't for the heat level in there. I have read posts showing temperature ranges from 115 to 125 with a meat thermometer. I left my cell phone in the right pocket one afternoon and the LCD screen went dead. Are there any concerns with the Autocom and heat?

I have not read anything about the heat issue, maybe some other can chime in and say for sure. If it is a high heat area, I will mount elsewhere. Thanks for bring the heat issue up.

UPDATE: I found this on a search, looks like the autocom will go elsewhere.

It is a problem... fried my $500 cell phone in there.

Sorry about your phone, your post as well as others have convinced me to mount the Autocom elsewhere. Thanks.

Well evan after paying full boat for my Autocom Active 7 I'm happy as can be with it. It works so well as an intercom and interfaces great with my cell phone, radar detector and Sirius radio I can't complain (much) :D Anyway I mounted the unit in the left side pocket for about 850 miles with no problems but moved under the seat when I got home because I missed the space in that pocket and once you get it set up you will rarely ever need to touch it. The volume control is only the intercom and has no effect on the other units.
