View Full Version : Where can you buy a helmet for children?
My son is three years old and he often wants to go for a ride on the ST. However, I have no intention of getting on the highway with him on board but would like to buy a helmet for him so that I could ride him around the neighborhood sometimes.....still reluctant to do that but it's gated and has little to no traffic most of the time. Anyone know where I can buy, preferably online, a helmet that would fit him?

I am thinking a motorcross/BMX style helmet. Full face etc...try at starting at a BMX shop. Of course you would want to go with a motocross helmet as it is much stronger I am sure..

I bought my son an XXS youth HJC MX helmet (for his cool little CRF). It is small, but he is smaller than average (he's 6 1/2). Got it at the honda dealer.
I _think_ they also make an XXXS in youth.

Kev - I would suggest you try it on him before you buy. I agree that the MX helmets are probably your best bet - they are full face while some of the other kids helmets out there are not. The reason I suggest try first is that my kids seemed to be quite fussy about pressure points and needed to try several models before settling on one.

Don't know if there's a Cycle Gear in your area but ours has a kids section so he could try on the helmet. They also have a website at http://www.cyclegear.com

Wow, three years old sure seems young to me. I guess if you're confident that he can/will hang on, then it would be okay. My daughter is 8 and started riding with me last December. I REALLY didn't want to get her a cheap helmet like a Vega or something. A local dealer was closing out XXS's and XXXS's and I was able to get her a Shoei RF900 in XXXS for $79.00!! It happened to be mismarked and should have been $99.00 on sale but that's still an incredible deal for a $370 helmet. Helmets in these small sizes apparently don't sell very well and you may be able to make some local dealer an offer on a model that has been in a Mfr line-up for awhile if they have the smallest sizes in stock. The MX and Offroad helmets should be okay for riding around the neighborhood but they offer no wind protection for the face if you think that might be necessary. Goggles would be another recommendation.

You should also check local motor vehicle laws to see what the minimum age is to be a passenger.
In NY there is no minimum. The only requirement is that the child may not ride in front of the driver and the the child must be able to reach the passenger pegs.

Three years does seem young, especially as wide as the ST seat is regarding their little legs. My son has wanted to ride for a couple years now, so we solved the problem by getting him his own bike...a JR50. He's five years old now and has been riding about 10 months (and is doing things with the bike in the dirt that make me flinch to think of doing!).
As for a helmet, many local dealers carry reputable dirt-style open face helmets from reputable manufacturers like HJC, Fox, etc. Better to make sure they fit...this isn't a good place for 'they'll grow into it'.
