View Full Version : thoughts on a heated seat.
I've been throwing around the idea of buying a Corbin solo, heated, for the winter months and would like some input from those that have/had/sat on them. Does the heat make a real difference for comfort? I had a Corbin for my Kawasaki and it was hard as a rock. I could ride with it but I ended up going back to stock before selling the bike. Anyway, I still have the backrest that came with it and kinda thought it might be nice to have some back support along with the heat.

I recommend the heated seat, I have one on my ST1100 and K1200LT, but suggest you consider something other than the Corbin. They are all very hard. IMHO, its worth the months it takes to get a custom made seat from Rick Mayer or other such craftsmen.
A heated vest or jacket liner is much more effective than a heated seat, but of course its nice to have both. Also you always have the seat with you. If you left the vest at home...
On a cost vs results basis, I recommend heated grips, vest, and seat, in that order. The seat is by far the most expensive.

I highly reccomend one. I have the Corbin on my GL1800 and plan to add another to the new pony in the stable my 03 ST.:03biker: There is nothing nicer than on a cold morning putting your backside down on a warm leather saddle.

Agreed, except I went with a heated jacket liner (with arms) rather than a vest. With the stock shield my arms are in the windstream and adding heat to them is good. With a Gerbings jacket liner, I've not yet felt the need for a heated seat.

I have the heated corbin solo seat and I love the heat. It's the rest of the seat that I'm not so fond of. For starters the seat is very hard. Maybe if you request it to be a little softer they might do that. But if they add more padding it will only make my second complaint worse. And that is that even in it's lowest adjustment I can barely touch the ground. Backing up is next to impossible. I'm 5'7" with a 31" inseam for reference. I do have to say that on a comfort level....it is better than the stock seat.

With Bones... maybe you should throw $50 at a sheepskin seat cover... comfort, a little warmth

Indeed. I have a sheepskin seat cover...warmer in winter and cooler in summer since you're not sitting on a sheet of vinyl.

I've got a Russell with their heating element installed. If you're going to make the investment in a custom seat and you ride when it's cool, a butt warmer is a great addition. The only thing I don't like about the Russell is that it's either on or off. Would be nice to be able to dial in the amount of warmth I want.

Choose your seat, then heat it. I have a Sargent seat that I am considering heating.
Saddlemen by Travelcade sells the seat heaters. (http://www.saddlemen.com/seatheaters.html) I was quoted $130.
Apparently, they are easy to install. They even have an optional top mount kit for installing the heater over the seat cover. I'm guessing that might be a good idea for just occasional use. Under the cover installation would be clean. The switch could be installed on the side of the seat or anywhere else.

I remember being a subject for one of those tests on EMF's a few years ago and I had one of the highest exposures due to guess what... riding a motorcycle with a magneto. Do you guys from the south really need heated seats?
I'm with Bones... sheepskin and jacket liner with heated grips.

Does the heat make a real difference for comfort?
It feels good. Not only for cold weather riding but also cooler or damper temperatures. It's nice to have. If it's an either or situation and you don't have heated clothing, you'll get more warmth from good heated clothing. But if it's an addition type of thing, you'll like it. Some new BMW's come with heated seats. If I remember correctly, Aerostich also sells a kit that you can add to your seat.
