Great Job Brian!:bow1: :03biker:
One suggestion before we get to Constoc375 (when we are all dead and the ST will really hover)
I propose a NAME CHANGE to 'ConnStoc' or 'CTStoc' (My preference) because in reality 'Con' is not the abbreviation for Connecticut.
What say you my brothers and sisters?!
2 More things..
1. The RIDE television show PROMISED me they will be covering our event next year so we should be on TV...
2. More than likely we should be planning on separate groups next year as I am sure we will have more than 13 riders.

Ok...I agree the name should be Ct-STOC and not ConStoc, so I'll update the Ct-STOC webpage.
Also the date has been set. It's Sept. 15th-17th, 2006. Hope everyone can make it.

I'm in. I hope you can get us out into the western part of the state and maybe up into Mass. Just for something different. I will be there whatever routes you choose. Please send Trojan man his invitation now you know he can be very busy!! TROJAN MAANN:03biker: :D

We're definitely going into Massachusetts, Possible more. I'm contemplating putting together a trip that would get us to all 6 New England states and possibly New York. The problem will be that it is gonna be a long day if we stay off the slab. Possibly 10-12 hours ride time. If I can't make this work we will definitely go into Mass.
Maybe you guys could give me a thumbs up or down on whether or not you wanna do a long Saturday ride. It could mean leaving the campground as early as 6:00AM just to get back at a descent hour.
SteveST1300
12-14-2005, 05:33 PM
Works for me after all we are coming up to ride so lets ride! Of ncourse this would depend on weather conditions etc. I dont think anyone wants to ride 10 hours in the rain! Although Trojan Man would stay dry in his gear ROFL!!:03biker: :D
Bones
12-14-2005, 06:52 PM
I'm all in favor of riding all day, but I won't slab it just for the sake of hitting all 6 New England states in one day. I've been to all of them! Let's plan a long day on roads worth riding and as many states as we hit are fine.
From the campground I can imagine going north into central Mass, west on the Mohawk Trail, maybe south on 8A and 8, or 7 and 7A, or NY22, or 112 into Vermont...the list goes on.
What about a meeting place? Should we make the Blue Colony the established tradition or try something new?

Brian,
Great job on organizing this event, and great job on the web site.
I hope to make it, but I'm not sure yet. I will let you know.
My wife died of cancer in 2004, and I just got back into the dating thing. But, I did meet a great girl and things are progressing. So, I may just bring her along, or I may find my long riding days are limited. Just kidding, I have taken her on one 3 hour ride and she loved it (48F degrees, I let her have the Gerbings).
I'm just not sure how to haul all the gear. I may have to UPS some of the gear.
And, any chance this thread will beat the number of replies from last year's thread, what was that record setting number?

If anyone interested in renting one, Here's a link to our rental park models and the prices. Let me know if your interested in any of these as they rent fairly well and need to be booked well in advance. I will be able to cut a discount on the price, but not as much as with the campsites because we hire someone to clean and prep the units after each stay.

I've been toying with the idea of setting up our Saturday ride like this one.
http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69770
Not the same places, but maybe some interesting stuff within a days ride from here instead of a twisties kind of ride. It might get some of the rider's S.O.'s some interest in joining in. Another good point to doing a ride like this is that I could give out the GPS coordinates for our stops and we could break up into several small groups and have those with GPS units take lead of each group. Give me some input. Yah or Nay. Would you rather ride all day or do a ride like this?

We got my daughter a cat to go with our two Labs. Tina the cat took over. The male Lab (that's Winston in the photo) is OK with the cat, but the female (Sally) tucks tail and retreats whenever the cat is near. See her feet in the corner of the photo? C'mon, Sally, it's just a little kitty!
The cat seems to be good at keeping bears away because we haven't had any around recently. :D

Another MUST this year is a huge slide show of all the previous year 05 - 06 STOC events and more..
Groups in the safari fields (where the tents were put up last year) often set these up..how great would that be to compile a collection of photos with descriptive captions and put them out there for our collective viewing pleasure..

Yes and Yes...
First off for Friday Sept 15th,
we will definately meet up for the ride in. The Diner in Sandy Hook (Near Danbury) was a good place to meet. It accomodates the New York, NJ, PA as well as CT contingent.
A bit out of the way for the guys north of CT (MA, NH, VT) but heck you guys are New Englanders and STers..so I can't see it as a problem for tough guys as yourselves..:D
This is AGStreak territory and last year he ran us through some pretty good roads in Litchfield county. I'll chat with him again on this.
We did a alittle bit of highway last year and I will keep us off of that this year. I am going away for a week this Saturday so I won't be able to start any route planning until then.
For Saturday Sept 16th
Brian and I will divide and conquer..
Brian will lead a shorter ride which will probably leave later in the morning.
I will take another group that will leave earlier and cover more distance.
In the back of my mind is covering the northwest portion of CT..into NY (Carl's hood) moving north and then cutting back through the Berkshires of MA (Bone's hood)...
Saturday Night....
In case you missed this from my last post..
GUYS I WANT PICTURES from the period of CT-STOC 1 through this years's events..I want to put together a slide show for Saturday evening..
So send me some of your best (and worst) shots..
Best to do it by email: todd.guay@cox.net
Of course I can grab plenty from ths site but I am sure there are plenty that were not put up.

There'll be at least one more better half coming to CT-STOC. I'll be acompanied by my girlfriend Lisa and possibly her 2 boys (ages 12 & 13). - I'm assuming there'll be other kids there for them to play with.

Looks like you guys are going to have the same issue this year as we're having up here for NNESTOC with growth in the # of bikes attending, a good thing, but maybe worth considering two groups? Similar here, 19 so far, 12 taking a slightly shorter route and relaxed pace option, and 7 on the longer sportier route. I hope my group gets to be no more than 8... keeping the pace that we did last year with 11 was exceptional and pushed the sweep position pretty hard, not sure we'll get that lucky again. If we get any more for the gringo ride, we may want to split it again, but that's Dave's call. If that happens I may take an "intermediate" group, and hand off lead of the sport ride to someone who knows the roads and is one up. Who knows... if I don't make it down, have a blast, ride safe

Just an opinion of course... but anything in the 2 digit number to me seems a bit large for a group. I'd personally prefer 5 but 7 doesn't seem too bad. Might want to make a maximum number of 7 for a group and maybe have one group do the same ride but leave 30 mins earier? Again, just an opinion.

Yeah, I hear ya on the smaller #'s man. Last years route worked out really well because we had a really good mix of twisty stuff that was broken nicely with some big sightline straits that made getting 11 bikes around very minimal traffic a breeze. That ain't gonna be the case this year... to keep my average pace requires regular double line moves on shorter lines, safe for 2-4 bikes, but even 4 was a task to keep together all the time last weekend, many passes were 2+2. We'll see... after last weekend I have considered breaking the sporting ride into 2 groups of 4, 5 minute gap, sacrificing my favorite Boney wingman to ride lead on the second if he's willing.
The more laid back group is Dave's call, twelve bikes, likely more by the time this goes down, is a lot at any pace. We do have a few who know the area who maybe willing to take lead if we break it. My favorite group to lead is 3, one in each mirror :D

Hey gang...
Going to try and hook up with Bones and punch our way through the longer ride this Sunday morning. Figured I'd open it up to the group..
I expect most of the ground being covered Sunday will be Massachusett's Berkshire area and northwestern CT and I expect to follow Bone's lead as it is his hood.
In fairness to Bones I am still waiting for him to commit and I will be going with or with out..I hope to have the pleasure of his company of course but going none-the-less.
Early plan is Pre-dawn departure and back in sometime mid-afternoon.
More to come on routes and timing after I hear from our favorite wordsmith..

Cool Bones....Noon for you it is...what time do you usually head out on Sundays?
Looks like Bob is in (great Bob-STer), My guess is Nelson is coming (although I have not heard from him) and my buddy Norman will be joining us as well I think.
Your comment on the route out of Water's Edge on getting west of Hartford w/out slab or traffic is really the sticking point in my mind. I am open to suggestions from the collective..
Option 1. Head North up 32 into MA (looks close to Wilbraham) and then follow your lead west across springfield into the berks...
Option 2. Head east then north maybe via 207/38 and then north up 169 through Pomfret into MA around Southbridge..(then turn west here or stay north until route 2 then turn west)
Option 3. Head west immediately crossing the Hartford area somewhere south of the city and then turn north heading into the Berkshires...(actually retracing the trip into Water's edge from last years ride in)
Thoughts Bones?? Anyone else..
Bob,
I am thinking we meet/leave from the campground..we are probably less then an hour from Bones so we should time our departure accordingly.

I'm ready to roll around 5:00 am.
Option 2 sounds good.
32 up to Monson MA is pretty good, then there's some nice twisties (though often traffic) north of Palmer toward Ware.
From Ware, either 32A up the east side of Quabbin to 122, or 9 west and 202 north up the west side of Quabbin. Either way gets you to 122.
I like 78 north, west on Northfield Road (gray line on most maps) to 63, 10 across the CT River to US 5 south, 2 west (Mohawk Trail) to N. Adams, 8 south into CT, then somehow back to Water's Edge.
If we wanted to add some length to the ride, you can hop off 8 south onto 20 east, then 112 north to 116 west to 8A south to 9 west which brings you back to 8 south.
Lots of other options, but that's a great route.

Problem is, we really were not able to establish THE route..
Bones..I'll work with you on your ideas of getting west through MA. Route 32 was a pretty good back road and suitable for the group so that will be the route North out of the Campground..

There are a few more that I am pretty sure are going..AGStreak, GREG_ster?, PaulNH, Steve3b3..
SECOND..
The ride in.
Last year a bunch of us met in Southwest CT and made a day of the ride into Water's edge. We were treated to some nice roads led by AGStreak had a good lunch and a nice ride into the capmground. It also featured a stop and tour of Gillette's Castle.
Do we want to do this again?
I have the day off and can do the same thing. I think we can take essentially the same route (this time I can try to exclude slab)..Get us successfully up to Castle Craig as well and hit Devil's Hopyard. Maybe another touristy stop somewhere..Made for a really great day last year.
Who's in?
Bones is helping plan Saturday's long ride...
I'd like to get an update and breakdown of who is doing the shorter ride with Brian (Last time I talked to him he indicated around 160 miles) and the longer one into MA. Early indications are close to if not over 300.

Thanks Al..I'll keep editing the original post..

For example if we wind up with 14 or so in one ride..than chances are we break it into 2 separate riding groups of 7..I'll keep you posted as we learn who is going on which ride..

Ok Gang...Here is the first shot at Saturday's long ride plan.
In short I have it at about 324 Miles and about 9 hours of saddle time.
I did it the hard way via mapquest section by section:eek: . Someone with Streets and trips feel free to load the sucker and see if it jives.
It takes us from the campground north into MA and runs us West across the top of MA via the Mohawk trail and down route 8 back into CT with additional riding in Northwest CT before we make our turn back east toward the campground.
The one downer is we've got about 10 miles and 15 minutes of slab cutting across Hartford. Unavoidable but it keeps us off of city streets.
Allowing for an hour for lunch and gas up (approx 160 miles from when we leave to gas stop) and another hour for misc stops, photo ops etc...
Thanks to Bones for the MA route.
If we leave at 7AM we should be back around 6.
Comments, concerns?

The Friday route was laid out so as to minimally overlap the Saturday route. Rte 32, which gets us out of CT, is really the only one we do twice.
If we meet in Otis at the Diner and Deli at 9:00 we should be out of there before 10:00. There are some nice lay-bys along the way and if anyone really wants retail punishment we will be passing Yankee Candle's main store. There's a great no-frills BBQ place on 116 in Sunderland, which we can hit in time for lunch.
:eat2:
If we find ourselves running ahead of schedule, I can add in a loop or two to extend the route. In any event, we should arrive at Water's Edge in time to set up camp in daylight and clean up for the evenings shenanigans.

Well, BBQ lovers, I have sad news. Post-Labor Day hours are
shorter for the dedicated BBQ joints in my neck of the woods.
On Friday 9/15, Bub's BBQ would open 4:00 on Fridays, but it won't be open at all. I asked the owner about opening early for us and he said he would if he wasn't going to be in Georgia!
The other BBQ option is Holy Smokes (situated in a former church), which also opens at 4:00 on Fridays after Labor Day. We'd need a much bigger group for them to open early.
Since neither of these seems probable, I have another option. The Lady Killigrew Cafe is a cool and quirky sandwich place in an old mill along with a bookstore and some art galleries. Bistro seating with a view of the river as well as some outdoor seating. This place would be ideal for a group of 8 or a couple more. Interesting sandwiches on great sourdough bread or paninis. (There's a brewpub here, but we'll pass on beers.)
Whaddayathink?

Al,
The Saturday Mapsource files work fine, but I also have trouble with the ST&Trips file. It gives me “an attempt was made to access and unnamed file past it’s end” error message. I have the 12.00-1207-1200 version of ST&Trips bought a couple years ago so maybe yours is newer or something.
Just back from Vacation guys (pics here). http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?p=173774#post173774 Got a couple more pictures of Martini loving Mad Max there Bones.
I’m really up against it with weekend work on the homestead to remedy some problems, so whether Dawn and I will be able to make it to CT-STOC or not truly depends upon what I can accomplish labor day weekend and the one after. I hope to rent a backhoe for Labor Day and the following weekend and have things buttoned up by CT-STOC. However the homestead will be priority one if the “plan” gets an unexpected bump in the road, so I won’t know for absolute certain until the week leading up to CT-STOC. We sure as he** want to make it.
If things go right so we can come, we will likely hook up on Saturday in Canaan CT, to get in the cool sweeper run down Rt. 7 with you guys, then on into Water’s Edge with the group. We’ll probably take the same Rt. Home on Sunday in reverse. Dawn has gone through a small period of hip/back relapse and hasn’t been able to ride since NESTOC. She’s OK to do some riding to build stamina again now though, but we are keeping our portion of the route a bit short this time out. She should be plenty strong by NNESTOC time also.

Whose your daddy?!!! Hey,.. Todd (ST-Dork).. Paul and I are probably going to hook up with your group for lunch Friday. No sense in us riding western mASS all weekend... so we're thinking of riding western NH/southern Vermont Friday morning and heading south to your lunch spot and the ride down to the campground with you guys. If the logistics for hooking up are too much let me know and we can simply bail on the group ride Friday. Do you know when and where you are planning to stop for lunch Friday? My GPS wants to know.
Carl... you bailer!!! Not fair!
GeorgeGeorge... do your cabins have a wet bar?
I agree...we're gonna have to find new people to make fun of. Oh yeah...eddiemack is still coming!:D

Careful Brian, the PhotoShop finger is twitching :p: There is still a possibility I can get things buttoned up in time, I'll know more in a couple of weeks.
Al I get a "map has a bad format" message on the .stt file. Thanks for trying anyway. The MapSource files worked, and probably translated correctly though.
Actually attached here is a ST&Trips file of what I see in MapScource. Al your newer program will likely open this up, and you can tell me if it's right. If it is, then Bill can download this one to check his GPS with.
I'll attach the file.

Hi Carl,
I was able to open the file after I received this error msg.
I searched the internet for info but, found nothing. It looks like ver. 2006 isn't downward compatable with older versions of S&T. Probably due to the updated maps. That's my guess.
I did review the map and it's a perfect match to mine. Looks good. :)

Thanks Al! Dastardly Microsoft anyway, I suppose it's a map version thing though.
I'm pretty sure Billy can open my ST&Trips files, so he can download the one I posted to check his GPS out. I know he had issues before getting his GPS to calculate the route the same as STeve, John, and mine. The older ST&Trips file should get him straightened away.

Brian I am cleared from work at 4PM. I still have a small problem out there but I think I can still make this work. I have been tapped for Jury duty Federal Court in Camden its a 2 week stint that starts on the 5th. Hopefully I don't get called in. And if I do I know what to say. Everyone is guilty they should all fry! I will keep you posted. The last day is the 15th so worst case is I may not be able to go up Thursday but we will see. These guys don't fool around no excuses for working etc. I just hope its a slow week in court.

Al, I'm planning to go north on 47, bear left on Falls Road, name changes to Meadow Road, to end and a right turn on Greenfield Road to the cafe. Falls/Meadow is a nice route along the river and through farm fields.
After the cafe we'll do Main Street back to 47 to end at jct 63.
I'll need a head count for lunch...not a big place and some advanced warning for the kitchen is appreciated.

Wow what a coincidence...Sam was called for jury Sept18 as well but they cancelled court trial just last week so she is off the hook for now and we dont have to rush home on Sunday. Hope you get out of it too.

Brian    very, very, cool, well done! I'm certain it felt good indeed. There's nothing like a well earned trophy to put a big grin in place.
I hope to be riding a rented backhoe this weekend, whoopee (that's a sarcastic whoopee). Otherwise I'd be with you guys at the Canyon and sure of CTSTOC.
STeve make sure you fidget and twitch and look all around the room a lot, as well. Also mutter "GUILTY damn it" often and just loud enough to be heard along with a mouth, eye, and neck tick at the same time. It's embarrassing but you probably won't have to stay :p: :crackup

Hey Bob,
Welcome back to the loop..
In summary here is the deal..
Friday Sept 15th
we have a ride that some of us are meeting up on day 1 of Ct-stoc. Meeting at 9am in Otis at the Farmington River deli I believe it is called on Rt 8 and then we all ride into the Campground.
Saturday Sept 16th.
We have 2 different ride options..1 is a 300 or so miler and the other is a 160ish miler
Now this Sunday, I am hoping to preride the Saturday Sept 16th ride. Leaving the campground (I hope) at 7am which is the same time as CT-stoc departure time.
You or anyone else is welcome to hook up..weather looks a bit unsettled but I think as the day progresses it should get better..
Bob,
You are currently signed up for CT-Stoc...Can you tell us of your intentions? Friday ride in...Saturday long/short ride etc...
