So many bikes for this wittle place... The BBQ place is on one side, a bread place on the other. That bread place was doing booming business! :eek: The brisket was a little fatty... but the lamb ribs were mighty tasty! :D

OK, maybe it's the early stages of "cabin fever", but I just set a personal goal of riding down to Texas for one of those BBQ RTEs. See ya sometime this summer.

That is a cool T Bird F-4, I wrenched em for 8 years, I hate em and I love em. Thanks for posting the pic. :)

If you look, the t-bird is number 9. There was/is no number 9. The rider was the XO.
One of the other riders I was talking with noticed (he's an Army helecopter instructor out of Fort Hood, TX.
I love(d) the F-4 myself growing up, but I have to say I dreamed of flying the F or EF-111. Aparently I have a thing for big ugly aircraft.
The first time I saw an F-4 up close was CAP encampment at then Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX. RF-4Cs to be precise. We flew the simulators and everything. That was when the sime were all instrumentation and only had drum memory for storage.

I wrenched on F-4 D's and E's from 1980 thru 1988 in Homestead Florida and Osan AB Korea. My favorite was running engines at the trim pads, you would literally secure the tailhook to a large metal arm so that it would stay put during the runs. After it was secured you crank it up and after she warmed which J79's don't take long to do, you slam it into burner. Dual burner runs were my favorites, the jet would rumble and you would feel like it was ready to take off. If you were on the ground it was an amazing experience to see the dual afterburners and feel the rumble under your feet and your insides would feel wierd.
I was lucky enough to get 2 F-4 rides when I was active duty, they are awesome machines. When you are strapped in and the pilot hits both burners, you shoot out like a bullet. It really forces you back in the seat.
They were a ***** at times to work but overall they are my favorite jet. Lots of good memories overall.

I was stationed at Bergstrom AFB in the early 70's. What I liked best was when the RF-4' s had to do a FCF (Functional Check Flight) after they came out of maintenance. The a/c was usually cleared for an unrestricted climb to 40,000'. They'd run that sucker with the brakes locked as long as possible, plug in the burners, suck the gear up as soon as they were airborne, and hold it level until the end of the runway. Then they'd pull that baby vertical, or nearly so, and they'd be nothing but two little spots of afterburner heading for the sky in no time flat. The T-38 could outclimb it for the first 5,000' but then the F-4 caught up and passed it. It held the time-to-climb record for many years (or so memory serves me).
Unfortunately, I was in an O-2 squadron (military version of the Cessna 336) and about all it would do was make a lot of noise.

My region Cadet of the Year in CAP (my Cadet Commander as useless as he was) got a back seat ride in a Phantom II with the 147th (or 149th out of Houston Ellington) with COY out of Louisiana. They played with some NASA T-38s out over the Golf. When they came in my CC was already green and was waiting to explode. (We had a radio hookup and could hear what was going on) The PII landed and deployed the drag chute. the pilot yelled over the radio that the chute disengaged and they were going to crash at the end of the runway (more technical jargon, I don't remember the words) but we could see that the chute was fine, but we also heard something that could be only spelled as blechleselch. My CC blew chuncks over the radio... As VISA would say, priceless.

Yeah, but when one of the engines quit, you could still bring one of those in
without much problem.. Our Guard unit had O-2's before they got the
T-38 Tweetys..... Fitted with the 2.75 rockets, the O-2's could raise
a little hell... Usually WP for target marking, but an occasional HE found
its way into the pod from time to time.....

Don't ring a bell... I remember a guy coming from San Antonio on a black one, got it in May... and Dave's... I'm getting that dreaded Oldtimers :eek: :cbcgw1: it's comin for me... :eek:

Thank you so much for sharing ... it makes winter more bearable, and gives me a reason to finish my valve and carb synch job :)
Valves done, gotta borrow a carb stick next ... ;)
