View Full Version : Power Connection for Garmin 2610?

Greetings from a very frozen Hoosierville,

I'm getting ready to install a new Garmin 2610 and was wondering what power connection methods the group has used. I originally intended to run the GPS power cable to my electrified tank bag, but I may want to use the GPS with the tank bag removed from the bike. The cable looks long enough to get to the battery without any problems, but I wonder if a switched power source is available where the Hondaline plug connects in the right fairing pocket?

Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated

I ran power from a Blue Sea box in the tail section. You may want to think about not using switched power, so you can keep the GPS on when you shut off the bike (just a suggestion).

You can also take power (switched or unswitched) from the Quartet harness if you installed that.

You could rig up a fuseblock in the tail or in the fairing but it all depends on if you're hooking up more stuff later to decide what to do there.

Since you have the accessory plug that means you have the quartet harness on the bike. The easiest and cleanest path here is to buy the matching connectors from www.electricalconnection.com (http://www.electricalconnection.com). Then just crimp the pins for the connector onto your Garmin cable and put them in the connector. Now just plug it into the quartet harness and you're done. You can pick between constant 12V and switched 12V but IMO you're better off with constant 12V. It doesn't pull a lot of current and I know people that have left it on overnight with no issues.

Here's the direct link to the Hitachi Connectors (http://www.electricalconnection.com/electrical-components/hitachi.htm)

I really need to get an article written on this. Guess I better get my butt in gear.

I don't have the quartet harness or plug installed, I just figured there was power in there somewhere. Is there a downside to having it switched? Does the 2610 have a power on/off switch? I'd rather not have it on all the time.

I plug mine into a powerlet on the right side.:03biker:

If there's a power switch I'll wire the power source direct, perhaps to a powerlet for an easy disconnect. The pictures of the 2610 I've seen don't show a power switch and I didn't want to have to leave it on all the time or unplug it at night.

Sometimes you want to look at it with the bike off, maybe deciding where you are going to go, et. It's nice being able to do that with the bike shut down sometimes. You can just shut the switch off on the unit otherwise.

Then depending on how the outlet you use is wired you will want to consider if it will be powered all the time or not. You're going to need power for the outlet also so consider the quartet harness to get it there.
