In a nutshell:
The Gerbing Heated Pant Liner does more than heat your lower body. It's effective at preventing the cold and damp from working their craft on your joints and muscles. The feeling of warmth over your hip joints and knees, not to mention outside of thighs and shins, feels extremely soothing. Warm joints are happy joints.

Once you taste it, you're reluctant to go back to that cold feeling. It's very much a question of added comfort.

I love my Gerbing's jacket liner and gloves and have often thought about the pant liner. I guess I've always thought these were worn under your pants (like the jacket liner is under your real coat) Are they worn over the pants in a "chaps-like" fashion or under your pants like long-johns?

I could see myself buying a pair of these for cold weather riding, but only if they could be worn effectively over my pants.

Thanks for the clarification RC. I appreciate it.

If I could find some manly sized riding pants (read more X's than most porno flicks) I might consider a purchase....or even some over pants. But so far the search hasn't been easy.

They are meant to be worn under riding pants. Depending on how you size them, you can wear them over jeans or a snugger fit over long johns with your riding pants on top.

Though they are windproof. So I guess they could be worn over jeans as an outside pant. But they don't provide abrasion protection. I guess you'd have to check with Gerbing if they can be worn on the outside.

I'm thinking here more in terms of potential flapping of the material and whether that would or could weaken the heating elements.

Though I'm not saying that it would flap. Maybe it wouldn't. Just some things that come to mind.

Though Gerbing does make an outside riding pant called Union Ridge. It provides the same type of heating as the pant liner but in addition offers abrasion protection. They also make custom fitting gear so they can work with you.

The pant liner is worn over a thin pair of long johns to prevent hot spots and soiling from the bare skin. They need to be close to the the skin for maximum warmth. Jeans or any other kind of outer pant is then worn over them. It's best if the outer pant is somewhat windproof so the heat is not lost. I have worn them under Aerostitch Darien pants in 28 degree temps and have been toasty warm. :p:

That certainly works fine and is the preferred way. But they can also be worn by a commuter over jeans or pants and then with riding pants over ie a Stich. Get to the office, take off Stich and liners using full length zippers on each and you're set to go. It depends how you get them sized. So there is more than one way that they can be worn. It depends on your requirements and preference.

It's best if the outer pant is somewhat windproof so the heat is not lost.

Just a note: The current pant liners, like the jacket liner, are made with windproof nylon and have insulation. They're quite effective at preserving heat.

Yes, 28F doesn't come close to taxing that setup. At least not for me.
