Honda Heated grips

Hi all
Has any one had this problem with the heated grips? They work up to level two with the lights on the control unit being on constant, go any further than that and the lights start to flash at level 3 and 4 But it does not do it all the time.

I know there is a voltage regulator built into them to protect the battery but i could be on the motor way with the engine at 5000 RPM and the control unit is still flashing. It as if the alternator is not putting out enough power to run the grips.


Any comments

PS does any one have a control unit kicking about they are not using as I really don?t want to go and buy a full new set of grips to find put they are not at fault.

iirc they controller kicks out when it see low voltage.
Maybe wire size that's too small or a failing connection.

Hopefully it's not the alternator. Do you get normal voltage at the battery when it's acting up?

If it turns out, you do need new grip heaters check out the threads on the symtec units.
Much cheaper than a new oem set up.

Just checked it engine off at the posts of the battery it is 12.6V

Engine at idle about 1000 RPM 12.6V

Engine at 5000 RPM 13.86v

I do think it is a wire problem as it is so hit and miss but i have traced all the wires and they look to be ok..
