Could someone give me a brief rundown on what shaped heads fit which helmets best. I've got to admit that I'm liking the Icon helmets, as well as the Scorpions, but I'm not really disatisfied with my HJC either.

Do certain helmets fit certain shaped heads better than others?

I have both HJC's (CL-Max and Symax) and a Scorpion EXO-700... they fit me great. I think they are more oval than round, JMHO. The Scorpion is the best venting helmet of the three hands down, also noisiest ;) It is also a full face, SNELL/DOT rated... very resonable price too.

I have heard bad things about the paint and stickers of the Icon's... I really wanted a Mainframe... but wasn't going to have it start peeling and chipping on me for that kinda money. I have Icon Super Duty boots and love them... really like some of their stuff.

HTH,
Robert

Thanks Rob. I have to admit to liking the HJC brand. Never tried one on before buying my first (HJC are my initials. LOL) and have been pretty happy so far. Just exploring my options for the future when I look to replace my aging Sy-Max.

You got any vacation time over the next couple weeks. Weather may be cooperating and may be looking for some ride time.

Yeah... got 2 weeks starting 1/6... having back surgery :crackup then about 2 months no riding :22yikes: :o4: I might as well move up north :D

There's no really simple answer. Arai has three (at least) different shapes in their line. Most Shoei's fit rounder heads better than oval, but I understand a couple of their newer helmets are more oval in shape.

You might want to check out webbike world. They've got a good write-up on head shapes, and generally do a pretty good job of describing how helmets fit:

I have a long-oval(LO) shaped head and have had a hard time finding helmets that fit. Shoei put out a new design in the last couple of years with the LO shape and its the best fitting helmet I have owned. Its the RF1000. I also wear a Arai Classic M at work and that is a very nice fitting helmet also, but is open face.
I like the Shoei over the Arai in full face also because the visor rachets on the Shoei and not the Arai.

I have a better question. If a helmet is said to fit oval shapped heads best, then what exactly is "oval". When does oval become long oval. When does oval become round.

Only thing to do is try different models and brands. For the ones that initially feel the best, wear them for a half an hour in the store.

Unfortunately, these terms are kinda vague, and one manufacturers "oval" may be another's "round." For a general idea, look here:

Agreed. Unfortunately, most cycle dealers only stock a few brands and models of helmet, which makes it hard. Especially when you want to try on something beyond Shoei, Arai, HJC and Nolan. I've yet to see a Roof Boxer helmet anywhere locally, for example.

Given that, descriptions like oval, round, "earth" help some. If you can't try on locally, buy from a mail order vendor with a good (but not too generous) return policy.

Try them on is the best advice I can offer. I wore a couple Navas, then three different Shoei's and found them all comfortable.

I wanted to go to a flip-up helmet and the Shoei didn't work for me at all.

I tried the HJC and though it was comfortable I could pull it off my head with the strap in place.

I tried the Nolan and found the best-fitting helmet I've ever had.

Try 'em on!

Yea, some people may not have a lot of dealers in their area. For my area, a few dealers will cover at least Shoei,Arai,HJC,KBC,Icon.

The Scorpion 400 is the only one I found that would fit my football shaped head.
