View Full Version : Dual Stebels installed and using stock horn too

I bought a pair of the compact stebels before I realized the stock setup has only one horn... However, assuming that if at least two horns would be good, perhaps three would be better, I decided to see if I could get all of them up and working together.
To get it all happening I realized I would need two 20 amp fused circuits (one for each Stebel), so I picked up an ATC fuse block from Kragens, a bunch of 14 gauge wire and not enough connectors (had to run out to OSH for more).
Basically I used the stock 15 amp horn circuit to provide the power to the two relay switches, wired the 20 amp cicuits to the two stebels and the stock horn, I commoned all the ground circuits and ran them back to the battery. It took about 30 minutes and one blown 15 amp fuse to figure out the proper wiring for the setup. (I made an incorrect assumption about the two leads for the stock horn and basically shorted it out.)
I will post a more complete (wiith photos) description later this week, but I just wanted to say that the combo of all three horns is pretty impressive. Hopefully the cages that seem to want my lane from time to time will hear me coming now...:D

Looking forward to seeing it. Make sure to share the wiring/fuseblock too. ;)
Thanks,

I have the Stebel compact airhorn...wow!, is all I can say about how loud it is. I grounded my wires to the bracket that the stock horn was on and mounted the relay there too. I only ran the power wire to the battery.:)

I'm about install my Stebel Compact in the next week. Your set-up should loosen the bowels of anyone who thinks they will easily drift into your lane. I'm also interested to know how you mounted the second Stebel because I have two and I was going to send one back. Now I just might install both using the info that you share with us.

Hark! What are these Stebel Air Horns? I've got a couple of Fiamms installed on the 1300 where the stock horn was mounted and I'm not impressed with the volume or the sound. I put a set of Wolo horns on my wife's Corolla XRS and they rock. They're too big for the bike so I figured I was stuck with the Fiamms.
Do these horns really duplicate the loud air horn quality of the Wolo horns?
How well do they fit in the space where the stock horn was mounted?
It it a single horn with integrated compressor or is it two horns with a remote compressor?
Pictures? I would really like to see the mounting. It looks like nurseBob is installing two and Fastraveller is intalling one.

I note that you're in Fairfield. Why don't we meet somewhere and I can demo the horns. Then you can determine if they are loud enough for your needs.
I don't think they'd fit where the stock horn was; they are much larger. However, they neatly fit above the stock horn. Basically, they're nestled in next to the two pockets in the tupperware.
I will take several photos tomorrow before I put it all back together and will post the photos and my own mounting "journey."
Here's where I got most of the information I started with:

Ahhh,
Most excellent.
Thanks for the link nurseBob. The next few days are pretty hectic for me but I appreciate the offer to come see your install. Are you going to have the Tupperware off for a while or are you just in the process of doing the installation?
I've already got the wiring in place for the Fiamms, so it's just a matter of getting the Stebel in the right place.
Let's stay in touch though and see some of the local sights when the roads dry out. Here's (http://www.sporttouring.info) some of my local, (and not so local), rides in video. It would be great to join up with another STeed so I don't have to keep up with them damn Sprotbiles all the time.
My schedule will be getting more sane in Jan. I'm also hoping to hookup with STPilot for a ride or two. Perhaps we can figure out how to all meet-n-greet.
The tupperware goes back on tomorrow; I can't stand not being able to ride, even if the weather's foul.
Thanks for the links to your videos; I will check them out. I've already spent some time on your website and read some of your IBA posts. I think we enjoy a number of similar things about riding. Talk to you soon.

Hi Redeye. I like the look of that but does it actually need to be installed with a relay ? Will the existing horn wiring suffice ? Thanks. I ask because in my ignorace I once installed Maserati twin air horns on a Suzubi 200. They could make people levitate they were so loud, but I didnt know any different & just used the existing horn wiring to power the compressor. Never had any problems. :o:

FWIW, I have the Stebels and tried it both ways. They will work with just the stock horn wires attached. But... the volume was noticeably greater using the included relay and only using the OEM wires to close the relay and new 12 guage wire to power the Stebel. I'd guess 2x to 3x greater volume. :D I STRONGLY recommend new 12 guage wire and using the included relay.

First, I apologize if this is a silly thought.
The horn(s) on a Gold Wing are rather impressive, and I'd be quite happy with them installed ... is it possible to fit them to the ST, without allot of wiring, drilling, and all the other malarky necessary for the aftermarket solutions?
Admittedly, I've not looked at them on the Wing, so they may be completely different, and therefore not usable. But I just don't know ... can anyone spare a moment for a horn-inept rider? Thanks!! :D

Mad props to whoever figured this out. :bow1:
I mounted mine this evening and it went in like it was made for the STeed and Mr. Honda wanted it to go right there.
I already had my wiring in place for the Fiamms and I used a smaller bolt than what came with the Stebel to mount it behind the mirror. Mondo lock washers and a long thin flat blade screw driver to hold the bolt while I tightened the nut made quick work of it.
My wife says I'm done testing it.........
Thanks again!
Sounds like you came to a decision and acted! I hope you're as satisfied with yours as I am with mine!!!
