Honda HP-4 (no moly) and OEM filter every 5,000 kms or so ... :)
note - the local dealer has a good price on this ... not much more than some of the others mentioned here, in CDN terms, so I'm happy ...

Mobil 1 as well.....will do the third oil change at 8000 miles. I'm shooting for a 3000-3500 mile interval between changes.
Honda HP4 no moly. $8 per quart. Change every 5000 but moving to AMSOIL MCF 10/40. $5.75 per quart. Be aware that the Mobil 1 Gold Cap is automobile oil. I think folks are using it because its easy to get, costs less that most synthetics and has components that are tolerable for a wet clutch. I am not convinced about its efficacy, so I will buy AMSOIL MCF.

Mobile 1 Advanced SuperSyn Extended Performance 15W50 (AKA Goldcap) also at WallyWorld with ST7317 filter, or Bosch 3313 filter. 5k-7k intervals since 50k now has 110k. All seems to be in good order.

Mobil 1 Gold Cap 15w50 Synthetic, OEM filter.
Changed to Syn at 1000 or 4000. Can't remember.
Went away from the Purolator filter when Purolator said not to use it on the ST. If they aren't recommending it then if any oil related issues ever go wrong with the bike you'll have a hard time getting a warrenty fix from Honda, IMO.

minor rant/on
A search for "JASO T 903 standard" will find the specification it says it is a special spec for MC motor oil; but, it looks like it is only a wet-clutch/dry-clutch specification (roughly) : MA is for no slip, MB is for slip).
Page 98 of the ST1300 Owners Manual says that the GN4 and HP4 oils are equal in performance to SJ labeled oils.
Page 98 also says "no moly" and "no energy conserving oil".
Page 99 has the temp chart that lets you choose the viscosity based on your riding temps.
Mobil One Extended Performance 15-50 meets SM,SL,SJ,SH/CF
(http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_1_Extended_Performance.asp)
The US Gov set the ratings up so they could be sure to get oil that matched the manufacturers requirement in WWII.
If you're paying for "special oils" you're probably getting *great* oil; but, don't tell me that SAE SJ rated oil will harm the ST. That is motorcycle shop FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) to make you *feel* better when you buy their *special oil*.
minor rant/off
We now return you to your normal ST-Owners.com forum...

I think y'all are unnecessarily anal about oil but if it makes you feel good then keep using it. Like Mark above says the ST1300 owner's manual calls for GN4 at 8K mile intervals with OEM filter. That's what mine gets and loves it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Wow what a response! I see the business of oil in your machines is as individualized as what you like to drink. The common factor seams to be changing it around 4K. :o:

I've used MOTUL 5100 semi synthetic for over 15 years on various bikes.
It made a huge improvement to a rattly old XR350 I used to have.
Oil changes usually at 5-7000 Km.
I use MOTUL Diff oil in the ST13 as well.

I don't know what the deal is. According to filter guru's, the Pure One PL filter has some of the best filter media in it. Too much back pressure on the front side of the filter???.....which is something you might get if you have a lot of filtermedia or very low micron filter media, and a bypass valve that has a ..... truck suspension spring.....in it. Just speculations.

Aye, Daryl. We might as well admit it, OIL is a three letter word equivlent of RELIGION. The same basics of logic apply in both cases.
Truly, if it makes you feel better, and for some I know it does, to pay MUCH more for "super slickum" to lubricate you engine, then feel free to pay more. "Snake Oil" peddlers have been making a lot of money on selling "feel good" since before Colonial times. They still do. I'm sure they smile all the way to the bank with your contribution to their coffers.
