Is there any oil running down the front of the motor?
It will look like it is coming from the waterpump cover and will run down the side of the clutch cover.
Paul
Nope, dry as a bone
That definitely does not look right! Looks like a dealer engine pull to me. Looks to me like its coming from the back part of the engine.

Does it appear to be coming from between the block and head gasket?, can you tell?

Bike's fixed, had to replace the head gasket. I took it back to the dealer I purchased it from to have the warranty repair done, about a 2hr drive. dropped it off Mon., ready Wed.
Toys For Big Boys in Moncton is an awsome dealer:bow1: , sales and service is second to none, it's little wonder people from all over the maritimes give them their business.
I believe this is the first head gasket they had to replace on an ST1300, lucky me:rolleyes:

Say Pete,
Hope it was just your headgasket but I must warn you to keep a very close watchful eye on that area. My 03 leaked in almost the same area and the same way as yours. My headgaskets were replaced first but I continued to have the leaking mess on my right head. I discovered where it was coming from but they wouldn't listen and replaced the valve cover gasket. Still leaking. Mine was coming from the spark plug drain hole behind the header pipe. They finally were believers after putting dye in the oil and checking w/a black light. OK great they replaced the head w/a new and told me they would probably never see another one like that again. Well guess what the new replacment head is leaking out the side in a different area via a tiny pin hole in the casting. Guess I'm just one lucky fool. Hope yours is fine but I would keep a close eye on it.

Did the dealer have any idea what caused the head gasket to leak? Did you get to see the gasket when they took it off?
At the 600 mile service, are the head bolts supposed to be re torqued? I just wonder if that could lead to this type of oil leak?

No, I didn't ask to see the old gasket or ask for an explaination as to why it was leaking. I do all my own service and I didn't retorque the heads, the only other time the bike was back to the dealer was for the recalls and to check the valves.
Peter:04biker:
Retorqueing the heads is a major procedure, the cams would have to be removed. Honda does not require a retorque of the head bolts at any scheduled interval.

Was just thinking out loud at what could cause a head gasket to go bad?
