I just got the Power Data Cable kit so I can hard-wire the GPS V to the motorcycle battery. I don't want to sound like a dummy, but how do you hook up the Serial Data wires?
Obviously, the red wire goes to battery positive, and the black goes to ground. There are two other wires.... a white and a brown. The tag says the brown is a serial data out. And, it says the "blue" is the serial data in. I'm assuming they mean "white," since there is no blue wire.
My guess is that the serial data wires are for situations where I would interface the GPS with other gadgets... and that I can disregard them.
Also... on a semi-related topic.... has anyone else recently had error messages pop up in MapSource?

Agree.
Just cover those two wires so they dont short out.
Also remember the options, if you go direct to the battery with your connections, the GPS will be live all of the time until you turn the GPS off.
You may want to consider going through the ignition system, or the quartet harness to wire the GPS in so that it switches off when you turn the ignition off. Just a thought.

Thanks y'all! :D
Now I just need a warm afternoon to come along so I can hang out in the garage and wire it up.

Gentlemen, I present the only known Yamaha FZ6 limited Iron Butt edition. I have a helmet speaker kit in my Arai, so I can enjoy my Violent Fems as I cruise along. The GPS is hard-wired in, and everything appears to work like a charm. The only catch is that right now I have a cold from hell. :(

Very sweet! Is that an Ipod Nano w. video? Dont be watching too much TV while riding!

The Nano is the smaller one. Mine is the 60GB version... and it can store 150 hours of video playback. I haven't loaded any movies, however. I can only imagine how much that would freak out motorists at traffic lights. :D
Ron Ayers quoted Mike Kneebone in his book Going the Extra Mile that a GPS was "useful for reporting the exact location of the accident you had because you were looking at the GPS receiver instead of the road."

The draw on the Garmins are so low that you could literally leave them on all night and not affect the battery. What if you are sitting with the bike off and want to plan a route? Can't do that if its wired to the ignition. Mines goes back with fused direct connect to the battery!
