I went out Saturday morning to ride and had a new experience, weak battery. It was my fault, right before the Stagecoach trip I had hard wired the Autocom and having read that it was powered on and off by plugging in the headset I wired it to always on. Further investigation reveals that this is only when it is 9 volt powered.

I decided that it would be a good idea to add a battery tender and went out to get one. My favorite dealer, Honda of Lafayette did not stock the Battery Tender brand, they stocked a Pro Honda Optimate unit for about 2x the price of the Battery Tender at $64.95 but it looks like a good unit so I bought it.

Wired up real easy, seems very well made and has a feature that I had not seen mentioned in the Battery Tender literature, a Deep cycle/ desulfate mode at 22V if it detects a badly discharged battery along with a regular discharge test for 30 min out of every hour once it gets to a full charge. came with both a hardwire plug for the bike and a set of clamps for off the bike.

Hooked it up and it brought the battery up in about 2 hours but never did go into maintain mode. Now I just need to add an outside plug on the carport so I can plug in easily.

Depending on your battery condtion, it can take over night for the tender to go to solid green light (maintain) mode.

Guys

Been using the Optimate series for some years now, and have never had any problems with it.

If the bike is not going to be used for a while then just plug it in and leave it until you want to use the bike again. Real easy to use.

I have the Battery Tender and Love it. I just plug it into my Powerlet outlet after every ride and it works great.
