View Full Version : Curious about ST riders, male, female

Hey all.

Just got curious ... it seems like every post I read here is from a guy (and my name aside, I'm Male as well) and most ST riders I have met are male. I know of one Female MSF instructor in Houston who rides an ST, but for the most part it seems to be male dominated.

Now, I grant you that MC's in general are male dominated, but you're seeing more and more women on Cruisers and Sport Bikes ... riders, not passengers ... yet with the ST it really seems to be a Male thing. Have you noticed the same?

Just curiousity on my part. Thanks for indulging me.

I briefly met a female ST1100 rider over breakfast at NESTOC '05. Never met another, though there must be some.

She was one of my instructors way back when... about 5' 6", short haired brunette... good sense of humor... rides a gorgeous :biker: ST1100 , which kinda pushed me towards my ST when I decided cruisers sucked for a daily ride :D She was kinda cute IIRC

Let's not forget nfl too. Oh... and Mrs Lambert the fashionista :D

I suspect you just need to get out more... :-)
My wife is on an ST1300 (ST1100 before she was cut off by a jerk-semi driver), another ST1300 from northern AZ who took the Advanced riders class with us, and 2 other ST1100 ladies Patti and Barb from 2 ends of Phx, Linda Lambert of N.M. too.

I think there just aren't many STs out there...
Think of all the women on HD because someone told them they have a really short inseam and that is the only bike that will fit them...

The only female I have seen on an St was a Policewoman.

I do not mean this nastily, but she was more like someone from the WWF foundation LOL.

Most gals over here go for the lighter bikes and look at having the ability to put their feet down when stationary.

Popular bikes for the gals over here...CBR 600's, Fazers and some of the low slung cruisers.

One reason may be size. ;)

I was at STAR some years ago (2000?) and a couple of reps from Honda R&D were there. They wanted the women to gather so they could ask questions. I stayed to due my duty to my riding sisters, even though my friends were taking off for a really cool road.

Because more women were riding motorcycles, according to the R&D guys, they wanted each of us, in turn, to state what we ride, what we would like to ride, our height, inseam, what modifications we made to our rides to make them fit better, previous bikes, what we did not like about our rides/certain models, and what we would ride if size wasn't an issue.

Most of the women were on cruisers because they did not have the inseams to support anything else. Others had VFRs/ninjas that they lowered. Generally, the message was that the bikes out there were too big/tall and most of the women would like to be on something else but size was an issue, along with the lack of availablility of lowering options.

My friends (males), being great folks, waited for me but stood outside and made faces at me through the glass in the door. :p:

The R&D guys were busy taking notes and after a while did not even look up as the survey progressed around the circle.

My turn came. "I ride an ST1100. Stock. I have a 34" inseam. I'm 6'. I love the ST. Other bikes I have owned: PC800, V65 Sabre, CBR1000F. There isn't a bike I would like to have because I can pretty much ride whatever is on the market."

The R&D guy stopped writing, looked up, and, because he already shut the door because my friends were being silly, told me that there was nothing I could contribute to the rest of the discussion :( and if I wanted, I could be on my way.

So I took off on the great road with my friends.

There was one other woman in the group that roda an ST but she had hers lowered.

For those that do not know, Steve (hubby) and I met on our STs.:hotpepper

Yep, you got it right, she was a big girl to the point, and do not get me wrong, I am not sexist in anyway, but she really looked like a bloke with boobs, she smoked like a chimney and swore like a trooper, she embaressed me and that is saying something LOL. I would certainly not argue with her!

I do not mean to offend any of the ladies that read the posts, I think it is great to get a female riding a motorcycle, well, I train them to ride the damn things and it is good.

Motorcycling has lost the old 'Macho' image from the past, after all, it is nice to see the 'Biker Babes' and I think we should encourage it. However, I dont think I would let my wife out there on a bike, much rather have her riding pillion, after all, it is nice and cosy and when you go into one of those fast turns and you feel her legs tighten a little, I then long to get to our destination!

ROFLMAO

Nothing is meant by any of my comments above, to be detrementle to female riders or pillion passengers. I love having my wife on the back of the bike and she loves being there

Note how I carefully worded the posts! I love to see ladies riding motorcycles, I have trained quite a few over the past couple of years, and the old 'Macho' trend has long been buried as far as I am concerned.

Me, afraid, naaaah

I mean nothing untoward, but the gal I mentioned riding the Police St, she would have knocked me into next week and I would not certainly have taken up any argument with her LOL

A woman that can ride well can ride an ST. But someone not of that ability will be intimidated by the size and perceived weight of the bike.

An interesting story....back in 1995 I rode my Kawasaki Concours from Fort Worth, TX to Montreal for the F1 race. On the way home, I was coming down I-40 from Nashville towards Memphis. It was late June, temps were in the upper 90s, humidity the same. In my rear view mirrors, I made out a single headlamp...another motorcycle approaching from behind, and very, very quickly. It came and just whizzed by me - and I was doing 80 mph or more...a beautiful, dark pearl blue Beemer R1100RS (this was about the time they first came out, I beleive). Had hard luggage and a huge BMW tank bag. Rider was in full, black leather with a custom painted Arai helmet. Obviously hard core for riding.

Anyway, they went by me and off into the distance. About 10 miles later, I pull off at a rest area to cool off and catch a drink of water. As I pull into the rest area, there sits the Beemer. But the owner has gone inside to use the restroom. In a few minutes out comes this strikingly beautiful, 30-something blond female. It was her! So we struck up conversation. Turns out she had her husband lived in Memphis and had been at the Honda Hoot (or whatever it was called back then). He rode a Gold Wing, she was a Beemerphile. They both rode to the event, but not together. Why? Because he rode like Wingers do...in a group, and she prefered to ride fast and solo. So now she was on her way home and he'd be there by nighttime.

Point of all this is that a female can ride whatever they want, or more importantly, whatever they feel comfortable with. Which, for most females, is a shorter bike.

My wife, Maggie, is still very athletic at her young age of 54 and she's got a 31 or 32 inch inseam. She worked her way up to her 1300. Now she is very, very comfortable riding it. In fact, she can't get enough saddle time.

My wife rode and absolutely lover her '04 St1300. She also took the ERC course. Peggy always told me that because of the ST, she became a better rider, and I believe it. She could leave a lot of folks behind when it came to the twisties. Unfortunately, she has rheumatoid arthritis and forced her (unwillingly, I might add) out of her ST. Her hands and knees couldn't take that anymore. I'm glad she had the experience, and so is she. She now rides a Suzuki Burgman 650, and I daresay she can ride the pants off most of us, with it. No flies on that bike. Oh yeah, she's 5'9" with a 32" inseam, so the ST was not a problem for her.

Yes, a skilled rider can ride anything.

Back in the 70's, when I was even more delicate than I am now, I used to sneak out on my older brother's 10-speed (he had to get a job to pay for it and when he was working, well:rolleyes: ). The bike was way too big for me and my feet came far short of touching the ground. So when I needed to stop (a rare thing), and a porch/bench/wall was not available I would jump off and run to a stop next to the bike.

Now, if I could not touch the ground on the ST, regardless of my skill as a rider, and the bike is 3/4/5 times my weight, I would be intimidated --- and so would you --- regardless of skill level. And the stopping options available (see above) hardly apply.

We possess more skill and adeptness than you can imagine. Our prowess is exceeded only by our brilliant minds and sharp imaginations. We can do anything to you and for you as it benefits us. Our command is your wish. By day, you see us as your wives, in a stereotypical routine. By night, we loose the bonds of our cocoons, hone our skills in a cabalistic secret society devoted solely to inceasing our abilities to outdo you in everything without you knowing we can. We can outride you, outcook you, outclean you and outsex you....and still be all frilly and soft like you like us to be and resume our stereotypical roles on cue.

THIS is the definition of a lady STrider. :headbang:

Now, I must be going. It is cheat day on our diets and, after some dojo time (I am working on my blue belt and Steve 2nd black) we are headed for green chili cheeseburgers (New Mexican style) and a late afternoon ride.

See ya at the next meeting, ladies. :chat1:

My wife rode an R1150RT prior to the ST1300 and didn't care for it. It was top heavy and very tall. She said the ST was a piece of cake after the RT!! According to her, the ST was easy to ride and manage, and the weight seemed to disappear just as soon as the bike was underway. She did, however, have several years' riding experience prior to the ST.

I have suspected for years now that there is a super special secret thing that y'all of the fairer sex have had. Despite my constant efforts to figure out the workings of women in general, my wife has been closed mouth for the past 33 years, and it doesn't look like she will reveal the secrets of the XX group anytime soon.

Therefore, I would like to personally thank you for giving me a clue. That does not mean I understand any better, but maybe I can win some brownie points at home. :D

Down Tucson, AZ way lives Gail, an occasional riding buddy via the "Geezers" (http://groups.msn.com/GeezerBikers/home.htm) motorcycle club.

Gail is retired (i.e. a geezer-ette) and has ridden for about 38 years now. Her current bike is a 2000 ST1100 she bought new in 2000. The bike currently has 170,000 miles on it, all put on by her.

With so many miles behind her she's a very skilled rider and more than one sport bike guy has been surprised to discover at a rest stop that it was a gray haired woman on an ST keeping pace through the twisites.

On one ride down AZ 191 she passed a sport bike guy and tailed his buddy into a rest stop. When the pulled up he said "Geez, you ride the wheels off that thing!!" His mouth dropped open when she pulled off her helmet he saw that it was "a gray haired old lady" that had dogged him for the last 20 miles.

The first time I met her she told me "I ride motorcycles and I travel. That's all I do." Works for me!

Of course I have to chime in here to help Linda defend our position. I technically downsized to the ST from the GL 1500. However, in the meantime I tried out the BMW RT and Concours. By the way this is my second ST1100. It is an absolute fallacy that you have to flat foot on a bike. It's all in the slow speed control.

I think there's more women out there riding ST's than we realize, they just don't like to bring attention to themselves and are pretty low key, like my wife Tamara.

She rides a ST1100 and her previous bike was an R100RT. She's been riding for 18 years and is a great riding companion.
