I am just about to install the Symtec Grip Heater and notice that the instructions call for the application of heat resistant epoxy before putting the grip back on. Did anybody do this, is it nessesary? Do the standard grips go back on OK?

I didn't use any and haven't had any problems yet. I didn't like the stock grips so used this as an opportunity to move up to BMW grips. I also installed a Heatroller and am pleased with the overall results.

Hey John - what is a Heatroller?

Thanks Charlie, I went straight to the site and got the info. What's your opinion about applying epoxy. Seems to me if you need to remove for any reason (repair wiring) you no longer have the option.

I did not use epoxy either. I used a small amount of hairspray (learned from this board) to get the grips to slip on easily. Once that dries, the grips don't move. BUT you can get them back off if you need to swap out grips or swap out a heating pad if one goes bad.
I also installed a Heat troller mentioned aboved, mounted on the left brake reservior. Mounted the circuit box for the heat troller up under the dash next to the headlights. Get power from the Quartet harness, same connector as the OEM heated grips use. Gives you a huge range of heat adjustment rather then just High-Low. I also put disconnects for the grip heaters where I can get to them without removing any plastic if they ever go bad.
I also put UHMW tape (Ultra-High Molecular Weight frictionless tape) on the throttle housing to keep the throttle grip from binding/slowing because of the wire. It worked OK without the tape, but was sensitive to grip position on the throttle. With the tape, it doesn't matter, and I am sure that the wire will hold up longer. I believe I still have the pattern I made to cut the tape to perfectly fit the throttle housing if anyone wants it.
You can buy the tape at woodworking stores, but the widest I could find locally was .5 inch. I wanted it to cover half the throttle housing, and found a place that sells 2 inch wide tape by the foot: http://www.apsltd.com/Tree/d3000/e2141.asp
The Symtecs work great.

I didn't use (or need) anything between the Symtec heaters and the stock grips. As far as I can tell, there's no slipping, or even a hint of slipping. It was a darn tight fit getting them back on. (Used a $5.00 can of compressed nitrogen to "float" them off and then back on - don't have a compressor anymore)
