Has anyone tried the Alter Ego jacket? The guy at the shop was really high on this. I want something to ride in 50 degrees and up, not too expensive, under $300. I am also going to be looking for over pants. I would like the two to match so they can be hooked together.

I've had the Joe Rockect Super Ego Jacket (leather version of the Alter Ego) for about four months. Nice jacket, with the panels removed it does a nice job of ventilation. I wear the Frank Thomas stuff for cooler temperatures and keep the panels removed from the S. Ego. Seems to do well with the panels off for short trips around town, down to about 50-55* and tolerable when it heats up past 110*. I would think the textile model you are interested in would be pretty nice for mild to warm climates. Hope this helps....
Best Regards....George

My wife and I purchased the Joe Rocket AlterEgo jackets last season and did about 25,000kms using them. We are wearing them in my Avatar Picture. The jacket isn't as warm as my Revolution jacket so I still use that in the early spring and late fall rides. The zip off panels are nice once you get to the warm stuff they come off real easy and after a few times putting them back on, you get the hang of it. The drytech liner is supposed to be waterproof breathable but I found my my lower arms were wet from sweat when I drove in rain and snow on the way home from WeSTOC last year.
We were in about 2C temps on the way through the snow and we had Whidder heated vests then DryTech liner, then mesh part with outer layer zipped on and then Frog Toggs for an extra layer of wind and rain protection. We looked kinda funny with that many layers but we were very comfortable.
I wish Joe Rocket would make a light waterproof breathable layer on the outside not the inside of the jacket. I suggested that to them but they said it would flap around in the wind too much if it were on the outside.
The AlterEgo jacket is the only way I could travel 2up with camping gear without pulling a trailer.
I didn't buy the AlterEgo pants because I felt they didn't have enough mesh for the really hot days (small section that zips off). I went with the Phoenix pants and use Frog Toggs to cover that in the rain.

I think I might end up going with the First Gear stuff. Everyone seems to be high on it.:04biker: :04biker: :04biker: :04biker:
My personal experience is that Hein Gericke (First Gear) > Joe Rocket.

I have the Joe Rocket Ballistic Jacket -- waterproof, has insulated removeable liner and air vents for summer riding -- it is great --
my wife has the Alter Ego jacket, and it is great for the summer for her, but not warm enough for the winter, so she also has a Ballistic.
I use the First Gear riding pants and not yet had to put in the insulated liner. I have been down into 34 degrees with them and still warm without the liner

I started out the the Meteor, but found it was too hot in the summer. Great for cool/cold and rainy weather. Then I bought the Blaster 3.0 for cold/cool weather. Then I bought the Reactor 2 for summer. Now I wish I would have bought the Alter or Super Ego. Either of those really seem to be the best deal. I'd go with the AE if you like to ride in the rain like some of us nutjobs!
Last week I got the AE pants for year round. I'm happy with em so far, we'll see how they do in the summer...

I decided to go with the Joe Rocket Meteor 5.0 from Newenough and donated $1 to this site. Now I have to decide on the overpants. Again, I want something from 50 degrees on up to summer riding here in N.C., which is quite humid. I will be riding to and from work, about 35 miles backroads or highway, whichever I feel like. I am thinking of the Firstgear HT air but can't tell too much about the protection.
Help!!!:04biker: :04biker:

Hey Neighbor,
I have the Ballistic 6.0 Jacket...I like it alot...though I intend on getting something more breathable for summer.
I have the Ballistic overpants...if the temp is much above 45, my legs sweat a lot  ...so above that I wear the Phoenix pants. The FirstGear overpants (removable liner) are probably a better option versus the Ballistic.
I'm thinking about the Kevlar gear from CyclePort. :money1:

Eclipse,
I live in Mesa, AZ right next to Phoenix. I use and love the Alter Ego jacket and pants. Deal with temps from 38 to 118.
Any specific questions feel free to PM me. :)

I finally got the Meteor 5.0 but returned it because it doesn't look like it would have enough air flow in the summer for ol humid Carolina. I exchanged it for the Alter Ego and am very pleased. I am very comfortible down to about 38 degrees and look forward to this summer. I am waiting for Newenough to get the ht HT 2.0 airs in come mid March. Will let you know how the combo works.:04biker: :04biker: :04biker:

+1 on the First Gear HT Mesh Overpants. I am buying one as soon as available. With the waterproof removable liner, what else do you need for warm weather riding? Looks like it's built to last too. ;)
