I'm curious if anyone is running Hella lamps mounted under the mirrors of your ST1300, and if so, what mounts are you using? Also, are you happy with this setup? I'm looking to add auxilliary lighting but don't want to go with PIAAs. Have found various Hella's (anything from 4-inch round down to smaller size) at a decent price but was curious abuot the mounting issue.

I made some mounts for my 1100 that mounted under the mirrors, and the 1300 can use the same type.

You're welcome to ride over here (in Greenwood) some day, put your bike on the lift and we can fab a set for you in my shop. They're easy enough to make and won't take too long to do so.

PS - where did you located some inexpensive Hellas? I want to get another set for the ST as the ones I put on are a bit too small.

I may have to take you up on that! I've found various Hella models on eBay....not quite sure which ones to go with (I don't want five or six incher's hanging down there, but don't want bullet-sized, either). Do your brackets attach to the mirror mounting points? I've seen some people that have sandwiched two plates around the fairing/mirror housing. I don't want that stress on the plastic.

I'll be back on the road March 1 (insurance lay-up for winter). Lets follow up on that offer...figure out repayment (cash? Beer? Dinner?).

Yeah, I used the mirror mount bolt for my brackets and can do the same for yours - easy enough. The massive plates that go between the mirror and the body look to be a bit of overkill and don't look all that good either. I tried to make mine as invisible as possible.

I need to get some 910's for my bike, not really fond of the Hella's that I bought and will relocate them to another bike in the garage.

After March 1 is good for me too - just keep my email handy and drop me a line when you're riding again.

No payment is necessary - it'll be fun to make a set. Might be able to sell them to others that need them.

Hella 1300's on BLM brakets. I run 100w bulbs with the wire grommet removed & heat has not been a problem. The lamps are all metal. I use them occasionally and they are easily adjuSTed by hand. I run 60/55's on the bike so they are indeed aux lights. The Hellas are on a separate switch and can be powered up with or without the HL. As our STeeds age we will STart seeing STarter switch shunt failures and this "anytime on" feature will..and has gotten me home.
With the HL on hi, the modulator modulating and these on the traffic parts like the Red Sea :p:

Plus I like the model number ;-)

I have the Hella Optilux on my bike as well Dond - see pic below. Not sure which exact model they are though....

I've seen the Optilux for around $50. What are you impressions..are they worth having and do they put out enough light?

Hey, the more the merrier. But if we're not careful, we may end up incorporating a cruise control installation into this deal....grin!!!

I put in 100w H3's. That's 200w. Add the 120w HL.. 320w total. I don't know how much is enough 8-) The Hellas have pretty good reflectors.

The output was okay on mine, but one of the lenses keeps fogging up - every time I wash it or ride in rain, it fogs. Must not be sealing well someplace.

Have heard nothing but great things about the 910's and thought I'd give them a try.

I'm making a couple of the cruise control mounts, should I do one for you while I'm at it?:D :D

Just for curiousity's sake, I have seen a few lights mounted in what I would describe as above and inward from the mirrors, rather than below. Kind of placed about even with the edge of the upper fairing, just outside where the windscreen might be in a fully-lowered position. This location didn't look as 'hung out there' as the under mirror position, but don't know if either offers an advantage as far as light/visibility goes. I know I do not want to go with fork mounts.

On the bikes right is a Sylvania Silver STar w/shim. On the left is a Sylvania Xtra Vision w/o shim.
The aux lights are Hella 1300s w/100w h3s on BLM brackets.

I just bought the PIAA 910's on line. Hope to have them soon and make a new mount for them. They're quite a bit bigger than my Hella's, so I may need to make the mount a bit beefier. Kinda have to wait until I get them to see what I'll need.

Earache, you still up for this?

I'm getting ready to do the PIAA 910's with the BLM brackets.

Dond would you recommend the Hella's over the 910's? I'm basically going with the 910's because everyone else does and they are well tested.

I have been told the the Piaas are the holy grail of incandescents.
I have never owned a set so I cannot comment.

I saw a bike on eBay recently that had color-matched PIAAs - are the available somewhere?

I'll give it a go, sure. Just need to get the bike and lights in one spot so we can figure out exactly what it is you want and the best way to do it.

You can buy brackets that mount where Dond has his from BLM or from Joe Sears which is where I'm going to get mine.

Eric if you do a mod/fab day please let me know also. I would like to come down and observe and maybe talk about some ideas I've had. I think I may come up with my own solution for the LED mount I wanted but I'm not sure yet. Trying to use parts from old mounts to make one. Maybe if I don't have anything by spring you could take a look at it.

I can attest that the 910's are all they are cracked up to be. 110W original bulbs in mine and I love 'em.

I'm getting ready to mount the Hella Optilux 2500 Angel Eyes

I'm going to use a stainless steel bolt through the mirror mounts, then I only need a small notch on the bottom of the mirror cover for the bolt to clear.

Ideally, an m6 stainless steel threaded rod would be perfect. Unfortunately, try finding that at Lowes or HomeDepot.

I did find a 1/4-20 ss threaded rod at smallparts.com. 24" long for something like $4.00 plus $4.00 shipping. You need about 5-6 inches long each. (I've used a cut just zinc plated threaded rod for trial fitting, but I know what happens to even zinc plated rods after less than a year). So I'm just waiting for the ss rod to come to do the switcheroo. If you plan to so similar, you need to run a 1/4" drill down the hole -- it just needs a spec larger hole than on the mirror now.

The cool thing about the angel eyes, mounted this high is that they give you a wider stance than the fork mounted location, plus should be under MUCH lower stress on the bulb filaments and the mounting bolt. And, the LED ring looks like a BMW coming at ya!

I'm a little uncomfortable with the bolt only attaching to one of the holes in the Hella bracket, but at least this way, it still allows the mirror cover to pop off in a tip-over or bump.

I tried to find the post someone did on the mirror through-hole mounting method, but came up dry. One of the casualties of the site crash??? I will post mine when completed however.

Hi guys,
Have anyone use this mirror mount bracket from turbocity? May I know how is this bracket on ST? Is it easy to fix?

http://www.turbocity.com/product_info.php?cPath=64&products_id=596&osCsid=b4ec1ccb4f47d443110a768d1d6f96a6

Some of the guys here using BLM bracket, may I know what is the website for this product?

Thank you.

Has anyone had any problems with LEO's and aux lights over the mirrors? In NC, it is illegal to run headlights higher than 42" off the ground. Over the mirror mounts are probably higher than that.

In regards to Hella's, Just finished installing a set of FF200 xeon on a set of BLM mounts. The BLM mounts are really something after you figure out how to go about it. I mean they are exact. Who ever figured out this piece of artwork has a future with a Rubic's cube. Had 910 with Ron Major/Dick Seng mounts and dropped the bulbs to 55w amber to break up the front end profile, Xtralights in the stock headlight piaa 1100x on the forks. The dark is not as big a problem as it used to be, frontal picture in my album

Some where on the sight is a series of shopped pictures that morph from a front view of a st1300 into the classic area 51 alien, well done I might add. Can't find it now but It's here somewhere. Used that for inspiration... Think I'll give this steed the "Veronica" treatment using the name "Ripley" :)

Using the police switch to control al lthe light's the hella's are in the first position of the 123 switch, head light is on the H (7) position, headlights and fork lights are on in the P (8) position, 910 are on the 4 switch
