View Full Version : Oil change adventure

STat was due for her 18,000 mile oil change last night and I like doing it while the oil is nice and hot. Everything went according to SOP but the whole time our new border collie puppy (Nigel) was whimpering at the back screen door because he couldn't come over to me. I wanted to keep him from getting into the oil mess for obvious reasons. Once I had the drain plug back in, the new oil filter installed, the drain pan covered and any spillage cleaned up, I figured it would be safe to let him into the garage. Wouldn't you know it, that mischievous little pup made a b-line for the plastic oil filler cap that was sitting on a piece of newspaper beside the bike, grabbed it and disappeared into the night of the back yard! Damn!, little bugger! Of course I gave chase and when I caught Nigel he appeared to be trying to spit out the oil he tasted, apparently finding it disagreeable - no oil cap though. Oh ****! Where'd he drop it? Tall grass, pitch darkness and a small black plastic item made for some "fun" trying to find the darned thing. Must have spent 45 minutes out there with a flashlight combing the damned back yard looking it. Luckily I eventually found it complete with the o-ring and no tooth marks! :) Meanwhile Nigel was rubbing his face in the grass and with his paws. Bet he won't do that again! Bet I won't give him the chance either!

STeve,
Iwas having a coversation with a friend in Durango about living in a "good weather state". He'd just bought an FJR1300, sight unseen, from a guy in Utah and had just taken delivery of it. He lamented the fact that he would have to trailer the bike some distance just to get a little time on it until the weather improved.
I know Texas isn't California but it is seventy degrees outside and sunny so I suppose you could say I live in a good weather state. I reminded him that, when his weather is good, the mountains and beautiful scenery were just outside of town whereas I had a minimum three hour ride to get to anything interesting.
I guess it's a tradeoff (unless you live in California) - ride all year in the flatlands or wait for the good weather and scenery. I guess the grass is always greener and the roads twistier on the other side of the state line. :)
Oh well, I have a tentative trip planned to New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah - just as soon as it warms up!

That's why we named him Nigel. Nigel Mansell was pretty fast in his day. :F1Car1:

Be careful with the "cute dog" comments guys ... I saw a beer ad on the telly last night that suggested that if we showed any appreciation for dogs less than German Shepards, that we might not be "guys".
Have you seen this commercial? The product is Old Milwaukee Light; we open with three guys under the hood of a muscle car. One of them spots a pom-pom in the next yard. He crouches down to talk to the dog, making goo-goo noises at it, and suddenly an over-sized can of the product drops out of the sky, crushing him flat.
I don't know about you, but I'm tired of having my intelligence insulted by vendors. Why can't we have ...
Oops, I'm ranting .....
I'll get me coat ......;)

+1 If you can see through the glass, the beer ain't dark enough. Perhaps this will start a new debate and get us away from the St13 - Fjr - R1200rt thread.
My 15 year old Labrador died last Mother's Day (great timing, huh) and I've been considering a new puppy. How do the Border Collies get along with kids? Any genetic issues if you get a purebred?

We previously had a female BC, that died about a year and a half ago, and she was great with our kids. We had to break her from trying to herd them into the side yard as when they disobeyed her wishes, she'd nip at the heels - can you say face plant? The behavior is a strong natural tendency for this breed but a little training solved it. She wouldn't act on her herding instinct after training but she would verbally fuss a little whenever there were kids running every which direction. This dog was very protective and lovable and our experience was so positive that we wanted another one. They are very intelligent dogs and want a lot of human interaction, so training and activity for them is important. They can sometimes be pretty hyper if they aren't tended to. They have the usual problems of many breeds with hip dysplasia and epilepsy but the incidence is lower than other breeds. There's BC specific eye defect but again it's a low percentage and can be avoided by going to a reputable breeder.
Great dogs, if you want a pet that's a real family member, this is it. I plan to take Nigel through some agility training in addition to basic obedience training.

Thanks for the in depth reply, Jeff. My Lab had genetic epilepsy "cured" with phenobarbital. The vet couldn't believe she lived to 15.
I've wondered about the herding instinct and whether it was a problem or not.
Thanks again,

Unfortunately a good bit of the mileage has been commuting. Seems with traffic and gas prices getting worse and worse, I rely more and more on the bike. With a 93 mile round trip commute everyday, it's easy to run up the miles.

Hey, that's kinda cool. Nigel has graduated from stealing oil caps to flip flops now. Doesn't chew them up, just swipes them to get you to chase him I think. Little devil!
