Glad you are alright...I'm very interested in the black eye also. I am strongly considering a flip up helmet but I have read that the swivel mechanism can cause eye/ eye socket injuries during an impact. The opponents to a flip up helmet argue that there is not enough padding covering the “swivel” area....hmmm?

Gang,
I spoke to Chris tonight. He's been out of work all week since his back is still bothering him quite a bit. He went to the doctor today and they gave him some new drugs but told him if it's not better by the weekend they want to do some more xrays. His spirits are as good as can be expected considering what happened. Fortunately, Chris is one of those "all the gear, all the time" riders. :bow1: He did mention that the armor in his Joe Rocket jacket is broken between the shoulders and that's where he hurts the worst. Someone also asked about his Nolan flip face - it was closed, he thinks the impact just drove the inner surface of his helmet into his face causing the swollen eye and bruising.

I'm not sure about the details of the wreck - I wasn't with him on this trip. Apparently he was riding with a group and was last in line, so no one witnessed it.

I've been kind of waiting to Chris post something here in his own time - I'm sure you can understand he's pretty bummed right now. But seeing the volume of replys, I thought I'd try to give you some kind of an update. I think he'll be up to posting pretty soon.

On behalf of Chris I'd like to say thanks for your concern and well wishes...you guys are really are a great bunch.

Thanks for posting the update and all the best for a speedy recovery Chris!

I'm curious about the Nolan flip face and the eye injury. Some have speculated that the flip hinge mechanism compromises the amount of protection that the helmet offers in that area. Since the helmet has been crashed and shouldn't be reused, it would be interesting to do an autopsy on the helmet to see if that speculation might have merit. I've always ridden with a full-face lid but have often been tempted by the flips and having a data point from a real event might be helpful for others considering a similar purchase.

I'm curious about the Nolan flip face and the eye injury. Some have speculated that the flip hinge mechanism compromises the amount of protection that the helmet offers in that area.

I've seen other threads where a rider incurred injuries in the same general area wearing a flip up style helmet.

There is a reason none of the flip up helmets are SNELL certified.

Just as a reminder, the DOT label essentially means nothing. If it ain't SNELL certified, it ain't going on my head.

I don't want to upset anyone who loves SNELL, but many manufacturers are deciding to discontinue sending helmets to the SNELL Memorial Foundation for ceritification. SNELL's standards have recently come under attack in the media as well. The reasons are many. SNELL's standards are inching further and further away from reality. They are advocating the creation of stiffer and stiffer helmets (heavier as well) that may reduce relative significance of head injuries at 100 mph impacts (you'll still be a vegetable), but cause more damage to the rider's brain (e.g., more g-force is transferred) during low-speed, more common, impacts. SNELL is now beginning to cater it's standards to the one-in-a-million crashes, rather than the statistically relevant crashes (e.g., the crashes experienced by actual riders every day).

Motorcyclist Magazine duplicated SNELL (SNELL provides helmet testing protocol directions on their website www.smf.org) helmet safety testing over 6 months and wrote a fantastic two-part article that included the thoughts of many great minds in the helmet industry. They lost the advertising dollars of several helmet companies and received a scalding, petty, and rather immature letter from SNELL. Why? Because the "safest" helmet in their test was not SNELL approved. Go figure. Some DOT approved helmets are significantly safer (transfer less g-force to the skull as measured by an accelerometer) than SNELL helmets.

I am not saying that the Nolan N100E is safer than a SNELL helmet. However, the Nolan N100E is also ECE 22.05 approved which is a stricter standard than DOT.

I believe that the SNELL standard may very quickly become a joke unless modified.

Hey Guys,

I see Al gave ya'll an update, so I just wanted to reaffirm how much I appreciate all of your support and words of comfort.

With the change in meds, I can think again and I am slowly getting better, I went into the office today and took a look at the stuff waiting on Monday for me. What Al did not mention is that he, Liz Mrak, Greg Mullen, Mitch Trahan and a score of other fine folks basically stood up and covered my teaching load last week. I cannot tell you what having friends like that is worth to me.

The bike is totalled, USAA call this week and made a settlement that is fair. I had my wife drive me back to MS. Thursday and I was able to retrieve my Sargent and my Autocom as well as my personal Items in the bags and trunk. It was sad to see the bike chained to a fence in what is basically a combination salavage yard and barn yard.

Both front forks are actually broken open, the front tire is up in the tunnel against the radiator. Handle bars are bent to the left so I could not get my PTT switch off. All plastic is shattered, except the windshield and gage pod.right bag came off but was structurly intact, left bag is shattered from the bottom where something beat into it. Motor and the back end looked intact.

USAA is going to be moving it to an unnamed salavage yard next week, hence the big need to put muself in the truck and moan my way back to MS.

I stiff do not know what happened to me. I was riding behind the group and was not moving at a fast pace. The curve to the left was mild to moderate and from what I remember the entry was just like every other curve. Good pavement, dry, no debris. Mid curve for some reason the bike stood up. I did not change power settings, touch the brakes or make any control input, it just stood up, I got it leaned back over but by then I was off the right side, no shoulder and then into the ditch. COuld not get any movement back to the left and the angle of the ditch was forcing me to the right, braking was non existant on the grass and the next thing I knew was that I was lying on my back in a briar patch about 2 feet past the bike , so if I could have rasied my head at that point the bike was in front of me. I do not know how long I was out but I do not think it was long.

Lots of pain in between my shoulderblades and along my back, all the wind knocked out of me. Bystanders started showing up but non could get to me in brush. I could move everything so after a few tries I got on my hands and knees and crawled to the clear area on the ditch where I stayed until EMS got me. Lots of X-rays in Brookhaven and a few CT's and I was cleared for any fractures. Lots of severe muscle tearing and bruising in my upper back making it very painful to move around even 7 days later.

Gear Report

SOme questions about the Nolan. It sounds from bystanders like I hit a reasonanbley sized scrub tree and broke it and then a second stopped us. The Nolan took a gigantic blow on the right side. No penetration or deformation. The bruise on the right side of my face and the black eye matches with the section just above the removeable cheek pad. The hinge on the Nolan is further back. The contact area is thinly padded but I think matches what my Full Face where at that location. The right side release latch is smashed in and the red plastic portion is torn off but the latch held. The face shield actually broke at the hinge on the opposite side from the impact. I have a great bruise on the right side of my neck where the cover for the chin strap lies against my neck. My nose was also bleeding for a little while but I can't see where I hit it in the helment.

JR Alter Ego is useable as soon as I can get another spine pad. This one is creased a little at the point of impact on my back. The pattern of swollen muscles under my back perfectly matches the shape of this pad and I never wanted to thank a few cents worth of expanded foam so much before in my life. Arm armour stayed in place and the whole jacket has been fantastic.

JR AE pants. Shredded and melted looking area on the inside right leg. There are no injuries to my legs at all.

Oxtar matrix Boots are muddy, and scraped but still good to go.

I was wearing my new Roadgear Boss winter gloves and they did ok also. I have a swollen bruised area on the back of my right hand and my ring finger knuckle is a little displaced but I have full movement and little pain. If I had been in my regular ICON gloves I would have some broken fingers.

I will be riding again, just not soon. Have to get past the hospital bills and the need for a new car too. Hopefully by Fall I can start looking for an ST to replace mine.

Talk to ya'll soon

Chris :couch1:

Chris,

Praying for a fast recovery for you. Its good to see, at least from what I read in your after action report, that most of the gear you were wearing probably contributed to you being alive today.

Hope you get better and I see you on another STeed again at a ride someday.

Jeff

Glad you're in good spirits despite your pain and loss. I had full gear on too when I crashed and had to deal with the ER staff's ignorant comments like, were you racing or going really fast! I didn't know if the questions were a response to the gear I was wearing or just a public reaction to another rider injury from a motorcycle. I suffered a broken hand probably from a knee jerk reaction to falling down and trying to catch myself; who knows it happens so fast.
Be well and thank the riding gods.

Another late post...

... but glad to hear you're going to recover! A totalled bike can be replaced. A totalled body can't. (No I don't believe in reincarnation).

Glad to hear your gear did its job! Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery.

I'm relatively new to this forum. I purchased my :biker: in January but not riding it yet due to winter. I am really amazed by the closeness of this community. It's as if when one hurts we share thw pain. There's very little left to say. Get well Chris. Good luck with your recovery.

Been a few weeks, anyone know how Chris is doing??

FYI guys - I fussed at him yesterday and told him he needed to check in now and then. He's bought one of these - I think he's hanging out at Murano-owners.com now......some people are soooooo fickle :D

OK, Ok,

NO I am not hanging out at www.nissanmurano.org  (http://www.nissanmurano.org)
I am feeling better and have once again got to tell all of you how much better I feel about the situation with all the support I have been getting from everyone here.:bow1: ROb, Coop, Mark, Mike P, Steve, RC, LEO, BG, Paul, Fred, Doobage, Both Brian and Bryan, Ray, GG and all the folks who have called, e-mailed and even braved AL to check on me, Thanks Guys!

I am still trying to adjust to being bikeless. As the pain subsides I now have more time to dwell on missing the RAT, Any STOC events and of course Westoc XI. MY bike and hanging around here basically is my social life so I find a big void that I am trying to fill untill Bike time rolls around again.

As Al says, I had to break down and buy a new car so I will not be bike shopping until the late fall. I have my Sargent and my Autocom from the Insurance Co. Al is looking at LT's and Wings and I am basically going to just start watching for a good deal at the end of the season. Black ST's don't do it for me, I am a Blue guy at heart and the Wineberry is a close second. The 03 Silver is ok but the black wheels did not work for me.

When I see a good deal and the financial stars are in line I will be back up and riding. Notice I am not selling any of my gear or accessories but I did cancel my Highway Wings order until I know what I will be riding next year.

Until then I think I am going to become the Gear police on the board cause ATGATT is why I am here typing tonight.

Chris,

1) By September you'll be itching for a ride... Make sure you're ready to fly somewhere and pick up an end of season deal...
2) Don't rule out any color! You're going to be buying used and the paint on the wheels can be taken off completely on any of our wheels.
3) When you're ready to ride let the forum know; so, of us have multiple bikes in the family... And the extra gear too (helmet and jacket boys come to mind! :-) ) ). We took a Brit, visiting here for work in the winter, out on a 200 mile loop he on my bike Chris on I on hers; his wife back in England called him a bunch of bad names when she saw the pictures (she rides her own Ducati).

So when are you ready for a couple of 200 mile days in AZ?
We've got a bunch of AZ ST-Owners that I bet would jump and riding around with you... (ZimaBoy!)

Mark

Mark always seems to make these 'Zima' comments the night before he helps me do mech work on my ST. Tomorrow is the clutch/brake bleed, so I can't really 'rip' into him like I normally would. For now though:  :f2:

For the record: I've never even tried Zima.

Anyway, Mark makes some good points Chris. When you get the ST itch, let the group know so that we can assist in any way possible. And, when those planets align themselves again, WE RIDE !!!!
