I lay out all my clothes, and all the cash.

I then divide the amount of clothes in half, and double the cash.

Then, I divide the clothes again, and add more cash.

Then, I pack the top box .... :D

Bill's got the right idea...light packing is good packing.

I recommend an LED flashlight, Leatherman or multi-tool, deck shoes or flip flops to wear around camp/room, small notepad and pen, sunglasses with multilple lens options, spare fuses...

This may sound crazy - but I take a dry-erase marker pen for making route related notes on the back side of the windshield (before I STart out each morning - or at fuel STops). :06biker:

I pack pretty light. Some extra clothes, camera, Phoenix jacket if it is going to be cool or rainy at times so I have a break from the riding suit or a rain suit if it is going to be hot and dry most of the way. With the GIVI 52 liter trunk that leaves a lot of room unless I am camping. Then the sleeping bag and tent go in the left saddlebag and room is a little tight.:03biker:

My main issue is how much clothes to take. For instance, I overpacked for the last 2 Westoc's and sent STuff back in a box. I carried 4 jeans, 4 shirts, 4 of everything. At the Embassy Suites, my room was near a washer dryer and ended up sending 2 jeans, 2 pairs of socks, etc. back to PSP and the bike obviously weighed less on return trip to PSP. Feedback on this issue welcomed. lets say..
What do you pack for a 6 day cross country trip?

I pack enough skivvies and sox for each day I'm going to be on the road (up to 7 sets), two clean pair of jeans, a clean shirt for each day (up to five). There are laundries throughout the country and the change machines are getting better and better. If I'm camping, I carry Raimen and a camp stove and coffee pot, a few utensils, eat out of the pan I cook in and don't worry about cleaning a lot of dishes. First-aid kit, fire extinguisher, tools, rain gear, Gerbing's, two sets of gloves(one light weight, one Gerbing's) I also have Aero stitches rain mittens that ride along stuffed some where.

Some of the most comfortable socks and skivvies for riding are made of 100% polyester. (Not the stuff from the 1960s, guys.) Wash 'em in the evening, dry by morning. A pair to wear and a spare.

Ridingfar

4 pairs of jeans!?! AYSM? Maybe - maybe 2, usually 1. Maybe 1 jeans and 1 docker...

I've gone to riding in UnderArmor under my Roadcrafter (unless it's really cold), carry two sets of long sleeve shirt, leggins/tights and soxs, and wash out one set each night. So my requirement for regular clothes is limited to non-riding wear.

I do pack enough shirts, u-trow and sox for 3-4 changes for a week's trip (7-9 days), probably 3 but could be 2 for a 6 day trip depending on the circumstance and social interactions I'll be engaging in. Don't know about you, but I don't tend to sweat out a set of clothes in an evening when I'm traveling....and if I do, there's always a washer/dryer to be found if needed.

HTH!

Okay, I'm new to this group, and am learning a lot. As I see it ... Bill packs lots of money ... gotta get to know him for drinks ... Ken, the Boy Scout, packs everything ... so if you're riding with him, you can go light as he'll have anything ya need ... :-)

I haven't done a long trip yet on the ST, just on the Cruiser. But with the additional storage on the ST and my topcase I have already enhanced my list based on what y'all have listed here. Thanks!

Oh, I also carry three flares next to the first aid kit.

How's the new toy?
Just got back from a 240 mile round trip in 35 degree temps.....wishing for the heated grips and larger windscreen (on order). Took back roads near Charlottesville (20 and 649) and was doing 80 in 35 posted zones! The new toy is nice! I may have to go for the heated seat.....I saw where it would be useful today!

Instead of using up the pillion space for the wife, the wife is on her own ST so we get 2x the storage of most of you...
Beyond the credit cards, wine glasses and wine opener I pack some laundry soap (because I hate paying for perfumed soap at the laundry places) and some empty zip lock type plastic bags. The plastic bags are for all the dirty laundry in between washings.

When there is camping on tap we carry a REI TAJ 3 person tent, 2 Polarguard D sleeping bags (new for motorcycle camping as down might not get a chance to dry out while on a MC tour), sleeping pads and a SVEA 123R stove (http://search.ebay.com/svea-123_W0QQfnuZ1), home ground coffee beans and a single size melita, 'cuz you don't want to be around Chris if she hasn't had her coffee while on a road trip! :D

When packing to travel on the bike I use the method I learned in the Boy Scouts.
A clean shirt, underwear and socks in a one gallon zip lock bag.
Smash all the air out and you will be suprised how much you can pack in a small area!!!
Jeans can be wore a couple of days, and as far as boy scout shorts, if they made riding gear out of them, they would be better than kevlar.
I have been involved in the scouting program for 26 years, and have never wore out a pair of scout shorts, I have out grown several pair.
Man are they tough!!!
So you can pack a lot and still pack tight!!

The only extra things that haven't been mentioned (that I recall  ) is a Camelbak in the tankbag for water intake while on the road and trailmix (also in the tankbag -- for easy access at gas stops.)

Ahh! A variation of my patented GPS.

GPS - Grease Pencil System - write out my route notes on the windshield with a grease pencil.

Nice to see someone else rely on it.

I always pack gear, tools, and cameras first. Clothes and other sundry items are low priority. When I take my wife on a trip, I get a portion of the tank bag for anything I want. Little trick for long distance travel. Ship your dirty clothes home and buy new ones.

Awesome suggestions, folks. I like the Ramen noodles suggestion (I get tired of freeze-dried REI camp food sometimes) a lot. I also like the coffee press idea: Portable, easy to clean, and makes strong coffee.

For myself, I don't leave home without the iPod, 3 pairs of gloves, the Roadcrafter (which is like wearing an extra suitcase), and extra socks.

When I had the ST--
In the fairing pockets--kick stand foot, pocket calculator, small spiral notebook, tire plug kit and legal docs in a baggie.

In the tankbag--hat, camera, pen/pencil, tire pressure gauge, 90 degree valve stem adapter for easier airing of tires, bottle of water, tylenol and antacids. More stuff if I unzip the accordian section to expand it.

Top Box--extra gloves, temp controller for Gerbing liner, camera tripod, extra bottles of water, bag of trail mix, rain jacket and waterproof zip in liner for mesh riding pants, bike cover and flip flops or tennis shoes if on long trip.

Saddlebags--Saddlebag liners with spare pants (2), tee shirts (2) undies (4) sox (3 pairs of moisture-wicking sox) a long sleeved button shirt and one or two button front short sleeved shirts. Other side--spare tools, Gerbing jacket liner, first aid kit, and shaving kit. I also carry a bunch of wet wipes. They come in handy for all kinds of things.

I usually had one or 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of those polypropelene moisture wicking pants with the zip off legs so I can also have shorts for when it gets hot. They roll up real small and are very light. I also wear moisture wickng tee shirts instead of cotton. They're a lot cooler when it's hot out and they dry quickly. Oh yeah, almost forgot--I put my cooling vest in the right saddlebag.

Since my wife rides her own bike, I carry half the camping gear in a waterproof duffel bag on the back seat of my bike and she carries the other half on her bike. That's all in the past, now, as I now ride a Wing. I still carry the same stuff in the bike except for the clothes which go in the camper trailer when we tow it. Otherwise, I pack the Wing the same way as I did the ST. I now have a 12 volt tire pump I carry, as well.

We don't cook in camp, except for coffee in the morning.
